Mass Schedule Weekends: Saturdays, 5:30 p.m. Sundays, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 a.m. Holy Days: 8 :15 A.M. and 7:00 p.m. Weekdays: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: 8:15 a.m. Wednesdays: 7:00 p.m. Confession Schedule Tuesdays from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturdays: 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Baptisms Sundays after the 11:30 A.M. 2 Page Two April 6, 2014 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR LOVE & OBEDIENCE TO GOD Today, I feel the need to defend myself. You see, the Confirmandi are gathering for a short retreat in order to prepare for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confirmation. And, although almost all parishes have a pre-confirmation retreat very few will actually be using The Matrix as a teaching tool. Before I discovered the wonderful Catholic meaning in this science fiction story I would have probably thought that using it was a bad idea for a teen retreat. In fact, the first time I saw parts of this movie, I said, what a stupid film, just more Hollywood violence to sell tickets. But allow me to try and explain why this is one great movie that sheds real light on Catholicism, and it's done in such a way that can draw otherwise bored and hormone crazed young people into a deeper love and commitment to Our Lord and His church. For those who know nothing of the story, it's a story about the bad guys who have taken over the world and how the good guys are trying to rescue the world from the slavery imposed on everyone. But the intrigue of The Matrix is that the bad guys are not guys at all. They are machines, computers to be exact, which are the products of our own making. That makes the story a kind of modern version of the Tower of Babel, because it is a reminder that technology, without love and obedience to the true God, will not bring about the Kingdom of God. In the movie, computers have figured out a way for their own self preservation by harvesting human beings to use them as human batteries. But the computers are not so malicious because they create a virtual world that looks just like our normal world. The major difference however is that the computers control everything. So the movie makes the insightful point that humans are caught up in a slavery that they themselves don't even realize is slavery. In this, the movie parallels a key message of Jesus: grace frees us from our slavery to sin. But sin is usually not seen as slavery. The movie is also great on an epistemological as well as a metaphysical level. Epistemology is just a fancy way to say the study of how we know stuff. Metaphysics is just a fancy way to say a study of reality that includes things beyond material things. What I like about The Matrix is that it assumes something about the world young people live in that must be confronted if faith in the true God of the bible is to grow in their hearts. It assumes that much of what young people learn in school today is in fact an indoctrination into a very anti- Catholic philosophy of life. So many young Catholics are anti- Catholic not because they have learned what Catholicism is and hence rejected it. Rather they have been told what Catholicism is by anti- Catholic elders, so they reject a corrupted form of it. The movie also teaches the point that believing in things like angels and daemons, miracles and sacramental grace, as well as heaven and hell requires an act of faith that goes beyond what our normal senses tell us is possible. The movie is enjoyable because it bends our normal sense of the normal. Faithful, believing people look like children who believe in fantasies to non-faithful, non-believing friends. But the truth is, is that the fantasies we believe in are more real than the supposed realities they believe in. Is the Constitution really as sacred as the Bible? Are political leaders really as wise as the prophets? The movie ends with one of the greatest modern cinematic images of the Resurrection I ve seen. We are looking for adults to spend time in adoration here in church while the youth are having their minds bent by Fr. Koys. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $3, which averages out to be $24.70 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 140 contributing families. I want to encourage you to sign up for it since it is a great way to keep in touch with all things St James. Think of a text message as an electronic yellow post-it note. If your life is anything like mine, my desk and kitchen are filled with notes reminding me about everything. If being apart of St. James is important to you, don t you want to keep up with the latest? And if your church friends are important to you, wouldn t you want to be able to communicate with them with lightning speed? let s say you need a baby sitter, or you re having a garage sale or maybe even there s an event you want people to know about. Just use Flocknotes. That s what I ve been doing as pastor. I promise you that my messages will be short and to the point. It s up to you if you want more info. That s what the newsletters are for. So if you believe in the active part of parish activity, please sign up for Flocknotes, or give your and mobile phone information to me and I ll sign you up. The first step is easy. On your mobile phone (that can receive text messages) start a new call by putting the numbers: Obviously telephone numbers usually need 7 numbers to make a call, but don t worry, your phone knows that this a way to send a message, not make a live telephone call. In the text window type: jamesatsag. (That s James at Sag, like St. James of the Sag) I get a note stating that someone with such and such a phone number just registered. If I know your name, I can complete the registration. If I do not know the name associated with that phone number, I just put you on a list for general information. If you put your in the registration form, you will get an inviting you to the Flocknote site, where you can register for more of the lists I have created, and you can put your name and write me a clever note; like: Hi Fr. Tom, you re the greatest! There is a list for our Youth Group, a list for our Catholic History Society, a list for Home School and Catholic school families, etc. So be not afraid. Sign up and harness the power of modern communications. But please beware, you cannot Flocknote your confession in and I cannot Flocknote absolution to you.
