With the help of a small group of women who had joined her, she started the first charity school in a small rented house, and later in an abandoned convent house which was given to her by the government. This became the Mother House of the Canossian Institute in Verona, Italy and continues to be so at present. We pray for the Sick...that they may experience God s Love and Healing. On Saturday, December 1 st, 2007 the Advent retreat begins with the 9:00 am Mass and concludes at 2:00 pm. All are welcome. All who are in ministry and in different associations need to attend. The Catholic Church warmly welcomes new members and tries to provide appropriate spiritual formation according to each person s needs. In general, people who are becoming Catholic fall into three categories: Infants and young children; people who have had little or no affiliation with or training in the Christian faith; and baptized people who have been active members in other Christian denominations. While our Christian minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, I m glad I would never do anything like that. And perhaps we wouldn t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God s eyes? Today s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. 6 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 6 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time BLIND JUSTICE A statue of Blind Justice stands atop many courts of law in the United States. She wears a blindfold and holds the scales of justice. She represents the ideal expressed in today s reading from Sirach that each person will be treated equally in the eyes of the law and that judges will [judge] justly and [affirm] the right (Sirach 35:18) based solely on the justness of each plaintiff s case. Yet we know that the wealthy can buy very good lawyers, giving them an edge in the courtroom. We know that blacks far outnumber whites on death row. We also know that high-profile defendants are often tried and convicted by the media before the judge and jury ever enter the court. However careful, no human judge or human justice system can be completely blind to factors such as race, wealth, religion, gender, age, or background. THE MERCY OF THE COURT In comparison, today s scriptures depict God as the just judge who offers every person an equal measure of justice. Like the Pharisee in today s Gospel, we must be careful not to overestimate our own worthiness or to judge the unworthiness of others. Like the apostle Paul, we must realize that, if we are judged to be righteous in the courts of God, it will be based not on our status as Christians, or on our good deeds, or on any other factor by which we might exalt ourselves. Instead, it will be solely because we asked for and relied on God s mercy. Sirach reminds us that God is swift to hear and respond to every person who cries out for mercy, even those whom the world despises as unworthy. Those who [are] convinced of their own righteousness and despise everyone else (Luke 18:9) would be well advised to humble themselves enough to beg for mercy, or they may get a surprise on judgment day! Anonymous HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Parents, A big congratulations and thank you goes out to Raymond Loo (8B), Ryan Kau and Ryan Glenn (both from 6B). Raymond took wonderful leadership in encouraging our school community to participate in the Lights Out San Francisco event this past weekend. These three students encouraged over 200 of our families to participate. They passed out 200 energy saving light bulbs and have also invited all to consider participating in the Lights Out America event in March. Cheers for energy conservation and for these fine young men. Second, we announced the first time winners of our Science Committee s question on the Science Board. Congratulations Emma Mitchell (2B) and Wilson Chu (6B) for your correct answers to last week s question. New questions will be appearing regularly. The Science Board is between the 3 rd grade classroom and Sr. Esther s office on the main floor. We encourage all budding scientists to take a try at the questions. I look forward to seeing all of our 4 th and 5 th Grade families on Sunday at their 9:30 a.m. Family Mass. We will hope that the weather is as beautiful as it has been for the past few days.
