2 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 12, 2018 Lots of things cloud our vision. For example, the portrait of Elijah we see and hear in today s first reading is a far cry from that of the mighty prophet who had just slain the 450 prophets of Ba al! After hearing that Jezebel seeks his life, he flees to the wilderness and prays for death. Elijah s vision had gone terribly wrong. Thinking himself a failure at his task, he prayed for death. God s angel touched him and corrected his vision with food and drink and the command that he take nourishment, for his work is not yet finished! Paul is relentless with the Ephesians and writes, no longer live as the Gentiles do. The believer must put aside personal vices and replace them with those befitting of God. In other words, see with new eyes the ways of the Lord. Jesus makes a stunning revelation in the Gospel, I am the bread that came down from heaven. Don t see me as the son of a carpenter, but see me as The One sent by God. Yes, Moses gave you manna in the desert and many died. But the manna (bread) that I give is my flesh for the life of the world and those who eat and drink will live forever. The Jews gathered on that mountainside needed a new vision. Their literal understanding of his words blinded them to his identity AS God s own! So, see with the eyes of God this week and hear with the ears of God this week and live good and gracious Godlike ways this week. This week we celebrate the Holy Day of Obligation, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 th. Masses to celebrate this Feast are on Tuesday August 14 th at 7:00pm, Wednesday August 15 th at 9:00am and Wednesday at 5:00pm. Following the Wednesday evening Mass, DINNER will be served in the Fr. Garrity Center celebrating 166 years of our Parish, St Mary s faithful service to the community of Berea and beyond. Dinner is our treat for all but I ask that you call and put your name and number in so we have enough for all. And YES, if you would like to bake a special dessert to bring and share, DO SO! Great THANKS for your constant generosity in your weekly Offering! Grateful Living! Father John

Saturday, August 18th 3:00pm - Church Confessions Anniversary Wishes Sunday, August 19th Mother Teresa God s Pencil I always say I am a little pencil in the hands of God. He does the thinking. He does the writing. He does everything and it s really hard sometimes it s a broken pencil. He has to sharpen it a little more. But be a little instrument in His hands so that He can use you anytime, anywhere We have only to say Yes to Him. Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987) Family Perspective Listen to Jesus in today s gospel: Stop murmuring among yourselves! What good does it do? Similarly, Pope Francis invites us to encounter each other with reverence the way Jesus did. If we have a concern, state it honestly, clearly, with affection and at the appropriate time. Constant complaining becomes nagging. We might momentarily feel better, but others could become bitter. If you will be having a wedding anniversary in the month of August and would like your names listed in the bulletin, please call the parish office (440) or jabraham1@stmaryberea.org Bernard & Dorothy Canepari August 16th - 49 years Tom & Diane Krukemeyer August 16th - 60 years Ray & Margaret Nolan August 23rd - 60 years Len & Eleanor Stitt August 26th - 70 years Steve & Eve Hollender August 27th - 41 years That Man Is You: Bread of Life Our final session of the summer schedule takes place this Thursday, August 16th at 7:30pm in the Fr. John Garrity Center meeting room. We will focus on one of the boldest and most consequential statements Jesus makes about himself, I am the living bread that came down from heaven. What does that mean? How does it impact us? And what are we going to do with what he s given? It has been a great summer reading Gospel passages; in September we will restart the regular TMIY program. This year s feature: The Battle Over the Bride. You won t want to miss this.

Elijah, prophet of the Lord, has given up on his calling in the face of difficult hardships. How many times have things gotten difficult, has the road become blurry, and I am content to give up. Of course, it is easier to avoid the challenge and be sedentary, and to be lazy rather than put effort into things that I am ultimately responsible for. It s maybe not the best thing, but I can relate with someone who feels discouraged and isn t completely faithful to their cause. It s a human characteristic, after all! The reading from 1 Kings does, however, show that when life is difficult and unpleasant, we are not alone. I have trouble with the phrase, everything happens for a reason. I find it cruel to say that someone s suffering is justified for another means. Due to the error of original sin, there is misfortune and adversity on this earth. Yet, God never abandoned us because of humanity s disobedience. God is always here with us, and he gives us what we need so that we can find peace in our hearts and strength in times of difficulty. He saved Elijah from starving to death in the desert, and he can help us with our own issues. We just need to keep our eyes open for the signs and gifts that the Lord sets out for us. Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for more information: ext 27.
