2 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 19, 2018 Like so many good teachers, Jesus is right up there with the best. He says the same thing in different ways to help us connect with a subject and come to understanding. For a fifth week, we hear Jesus tell the crowds that he is the bread of life, living bread come down from heaven, real food and real drink, and whoever eats his flesh will live forever. It is a difficult teaching to comprehend on its face. One must go deeper to discover its greater meaning. A literal interpretation of Jesus words sounds impossible. Tests have been conducted that try to discover a difference between consecrated and unconsecrated bread and wine, to no avail. These kinds of tests miss the point. While bread and wine still appear as bread and wine, our FAITH helps us see more, bread that is the Body of Christ and wine that is the Blood of Christ. When we go deeper, we hear Jesus words in the context of his offering himself as the Passover Lamb, sacrificed on the cross, giving himself totally to God and to us. His flesh and blood mingle with ours from the inside out. We BECOME what we eat and drink (St. Augustine) the LIVING BODY OF CHRIST. Jesus remains in us and we in him. The Eucharist is Wisdom s sumptuous feast that teaches to forsake foolishness and advance in the way of understanding. This feast fills us with the Holy Spirit, who gives us understanding and new life. We gather. We address each other in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. We give thanks in Jesus name and come to share the wisdom that faith alone provides. We must go BEYOND appearance and enter the mystery deeply, week after week, to taste and see the goodness of the Lord who offers us eternal life. [Living the word 2018] We all have family and friends, who from time to time are unable to attend Mass due to an illness or circumstance AND ask that we bring them Holy Communion for spiritual support. This is a wonderful request that we can honor. In order for that to happen, a PYX (pix) is the appropriate vessel with which to carry Holy Communion to the sick. If you HAVE BEEN ASKED to bring Holy Communion to a family member or neighbor at home, please STOP IN THE SACRISTY AND ASK FOR A PYX BEFORE MASS BEGINS. Holy Communion will be placed in the pyx at communion time and the pyx will be placed on the Altar and can be picked up by you after Mass is over. Also, if your family member / friend needs a personal visit from one of us, for confession or spiritual counsel, or by one of our homebound ministers on a regular basis, please let us know that as well. I will be playing the Gloria of the mass setting we will be switching to in September! It s time to shift gears for autumn, and so we will be singing A Community Mass by Richard Proulx. If you don t recognize the name, I am almost sure that you have heard it before, and also we did it three autumns ago! Now I don t know if you remember, but this mass setting was on cardstock at the end of the pews, and I was trying to teach this giant brand new Gloria, which I had no experience doing. I was a music director baby! So we are going to try again this year, and we are going to succeed! You will be listening this week, and we will start learning next week. If you are unable to listen to the prelude, I will have posted a recording of the mass setting if you are interested in getting it into your head. Being more prepared can only help in this situation! Youth and Traditional Choir start on Tuesday, and everyone starts up again showing up for masses on Sept 8 and 9! This is of course, the PERFECT time to jump into the music ministry! If you are on the fence, come to our first rehearsals! Think of it as a free trial; I will have some music and books prepared if you will attend. Thank you so much! Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft.
