2 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 19, 2017 A friend recently commented to me on how faithfully his grandfather saved money, as he was his executor of his estate. He also said that grandpa had lost everything in the 1929 crash and afterwards would only make the safest investments. Grandpa feared losing everything again. Fear kept the third servant in today s Gospel parable from taking the risks needed to grow what he had been given. The master scolded him for being lazy. How often has life experiences kept us from taking the steps and risks needed to develop the gifts that we have been given, whether of time, talent or treasure? Fear can be a powerful force. On the other hand, the worthy servants took those risks. They were industrious and like the woman in today s First Reading from Proverbs, generous to the Lord and to all people. And when the Thessalonians didn t experience Jesus immediate return, they were encouraged to keep using and developing the gifts that God gave them, and to live as children of the light, alert and ready for Christ s return. NOW WHAT do you hear as the message of the day? GRATEFUL GIVING REFLECTION: YOU ARE GIFTED We are used to hearing the term gifted applied to people of exceptional ability or talent. Yet each of us is gifted. Through God s grace, each of us has strengths, gifts, talents, and abilities without which the Body of Christ, the Church, is incomplete. This key dimension of stewardship the use of our gifts in service to others is the one many Catholics have the most trouble with. We can see ourselves, with prayer and sacrifice, giving more of our time and our treasure. But talent? That s for those other people, the gifted ones, we think. The term talent for a gift with which we have been entrusted by God comes from Jesus Parable of the Talents, where it originally meant a valuable coin. Like the stewards in the parable, entrusted with valuable commodities by our Master, will we hide them away in fear, or invest them for great return? Spend some time this week thinking about the gifts that you alone can share with our parish community and the wider world and then make a plan to share them. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) THANKSGIVING DAY MASS is at 9:30am. Come with your non-perishables to fill the baskets in the sanctuary. Join us to give thanks for all the blessings of life and love! THANK YOU for your financial support in response to Grateful Giving! Grateful Blessings! Fr. John

It brings the diversity and the beauty of being human to our everyday lives. These gifts from God can help us to better ourselves and the world around us. In today s Gospel, Matthew dictates a parable that Jesus said about servants with their talents. In context, I believe that these talents are actually a significant amount of money, which makes sense that the man expected his servants to make them grow in a financial sense. But God doesn t give us money to become a better person. Each individual on this planet has their own special set of skills and personal strengths, and with these we can develop our immaterial assets to become a better child of God! Of course, as a musician, I am going to relate this to my talent, which is the art of music directing, playing the piano and organ, and (in my personal opinion) boundless amiability. I m quite proud of myself for being able to know that I can be friendly and put people at ease! So I decided to study Sacred Music, and now I can spread my passion for music ministry with everyone at St. Mary Church! Bible Study & Faith Sharing The Book of Kings continues the story of the downfall of the Northern Kingdom, Israel. God sends warnings and prophets but His people refuse to listen. Come and see how those same warnings apply to our world today. Bring your Bible and join us Tuesday at 11:00am in the Chapel to see if the Lord might have a message for you. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the chapel. Quiet prayer will be followed with a little more of Everything Belongs. Don t let the business of the holiday keep you from spending time with the Lord. This may be the perfect time t give yourself the opportunity to try this method of prayer. Prayer Shawl Prayer shawl will meet in the chapel this afternoon from 3:00pm - 4:00pm. This is a good time to come and select a shawl for someone in need of spiritual comfort and support. The shawls are also very helpful for people receiving medical treatments such as chemo or dialysis. Everyone has their own special talent. It might take a while to realize what it is, but discovering your strengths will inevitably improve selfesteem and help you to want to grow your faith and stewardship with what you have! And if you find that you have a great singing voice, you should definitely join one of the choirs! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is ext 27.
