2 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2016 Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate and pray the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. These last few weeks of the Liturgical Cycle C, Jesus in Luke s Gospel offers some very practical advice to those who follow him. Last week we heard about thankfulness and gratitude. These are the attitude of the follower of Christ and today, he speaks about persistence in prayer. Keep asking and God who hears will answer. Yes, keep asking, but along with our asking, comes the task of listening. When we ask, we must be willing to wait as we listen for God s response. Persistence in prayer is often matched with patience in our prayers. God will always answer our prayers, and though it may not be with what we want, it is always with what we need! So keep on asking and keep on listening! God comes! CONGRATULATIONS, Peter Bang! Ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacon! On Saturday, October 22, 2016, Peter and his 7 classmates, Jacob Bearer, James Cosgrove, Eric Garris, Matthew Jordan, Robert McWilliams, Peter Morris and Anthony Simone will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon by The Most Reverend Richard Lennon, Bishop of Cleveland at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist at 10:00am! The celebration is open to the public! Please be seated by 9:30am as the Procession begins at 9:45am. Peter served us well here at St. Mary s in his first year of Theology and made a good impression on the students of the Day School and Faith Formation. He was present at many liturgies, and perhaps you remember his writing a hymn and singing it in his native tongue at the Mass of the Last Supper, Holy Thursday. Peter has continued his education and pastoral ministry and is ready and willing to be ordained for service to the Archdiocese of Daegu, South Korea! CONGRATULATIONS, Peter and your classmates! May you be truly and richly blessed in your lives of Service to Church! Our prayers and wishes go out to you! And of course, THANK YOU for your ever faithful Sunday offering! Peace! Father John

5 Family Perspectives The widow in today s gospel was successful because she was persistent. Children tend to be naturally persistent; they will repeat the same request over and over until an exhausted parent gives in, and then later will feel guilty for not being stronger. The gospel encourages us not to lose heart. Our challenge is to be a GOOD - not perfect - PARENT. World Mission Sunday Propagation of the Faith Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday (October 22-23) - Your ongoing support of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,111 dioceses through Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. Your generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and catechists to reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances. The World Mission Sunday celebration highlights the outreach of local churches through priests, religious and laity among the poor and marginalized half a world away. Lifechanging help is provided to mission churches in territories covering more than half the globe. Contribution envelopes are included in your monthly offering envelopes. One of the ways to not become tired of prayer is to pray differently every once in a while! Instead of your Hail Marys and Our Fathers, you can find religious poetry to meditate on. You could read or sing some of your favorite hymns! Or you could go on a religious retreat for a weekend to renew your faith. I went to a day retreat at a convent when I was in college that was both relaxing and invigorating for spiritual direction. There are so many opportunities that you can find in the Cleveland area to keep you motivated with your faith! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: ext 27.
