2 February 24, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have we kept our Ordinary Time EXTRAORDINARY? Have we stepped up and stepped out in our faith to be the face of Christ for others? Have we done well, or is there more to do? And if that s the case, then you are in luck, because the Season of Lent is nearly upon us. Ash Wednesday is in two weeks March 6 th and the universal Church turns its focus on the return of our mind and heart and spirit to that of the Lord. Today s Gospel kind of begs us to ask, Is Jesus crazy? Love enemies? Pray for and do good to those who hurt or hate? He needs to live in the real world! My question: Who would ever do these things? And the answer is: Us! It s a fair question. This is NOT our natural inclination when hurt or hated. But Jesus DID live in the real world and practiced what he preached. He did not return spit when spat upon, nor curse when cursed upon, nor resist arrest. He re-attached the slave s ear that Peter cut off. He lived in the real world. By becoming human he shows us another way to negotiate the real world. While crazy from our perspective, from God s perspective, Jesus way IS our salvation. His words reflect how God treats us when we become enemies by rejecting God s ways. His way? Do unto others as God does unto you. With keeping all that in our mind and heart, it could very well the outline for our making Lent a truly inspiring and life-changing season. We know about prayer, fasting and almsgiving and we pretty much do these things and do them well each year. Right? But, are we just doing the same thing year after year? Are we just giving up the stuff that is kind of easy for us to give up, or are we doing the same kinds of efforts at prayer that we always do, or giving to the same charities or organizations that we always give? And if we answer these as yes, yes and yes, then I ask HOW then are we changed by these good works? NEXT WEEKEND is St. Mary School PTO BIG Fundraiser Polka and Pierogis in the Fr. Garrity Center. Keating is very helpful in guiding us on our spiritual path. 12 Step Spirituality 12 Step will meet in the chapel on Thursday, February 28th from 2:30pm until 4:00pm. We will finish our current discussion book. On March 7th we will begin a study of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. All 12 steppers are free to join us no matter what your compulsion may be. Family Perspective Families each teach their own set of values. The gospel speaks of judging, condemning and forgiving noting in effect what goes around comes around. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Practice and grow with the gospel virtues of mercy and forgiveness. Be bold and stop the family blame game. Forgiving families prosper. His parables are wonderful and help the commoners understand and relate to his teachings, but in this instance, his message is clear: love other and be kind. His teachings very much reflect the golden rule of society, which is to treat others as you would like to be treated. He says, Stop judging, and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. If we beam with the love of Christ, how else will others be able to react but in kind? We invite everyone to make your Lenten experience meaningful this year with a one-day pilgrimage on Saturday - March 9th to St. Anthony s Chapel to view the relics of over 5,00 Saints within beautiful reliquaries at this Holy Shrine of our Catholic faith. Seats are limited See more details below.. There is a special connection that you make with others when you purposefully and mindfully choose your actions with kindness. In the heat of the moment, it might feel very satisfying to send a car that cut you off an aggressive hand signal, but what good does that do? Now you are fired up from getting angry, the other driver is now angry because of what you did, and no one leaves the situation in a better place. Positivity is infectiously exponential; what I mean that it is so easy to pass along a good mood by being kind to someone else! It s the idea of paying it forward, and the best part of it all is that these good actions are happening because we chose to be kind! Every single one of your actions and choices has a consequence, so make sure that you are spreading love as you go. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in choir, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Mrs. Angela Kovic after mass up in the loft. 6 St. Mary Catholic School News Corner Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul Mr. Andrew J. Carner, Principal Re-Registration forms for the school year were sent home a few weeks ago. You will also find these forms on our school website. Please complete the forms and return them with the necessary fees to the school office by February 28 th. Remember, a sliding re-registration fee was implemented this year so your timely return of these forms are critical for families to receive the best reregistration fee possible. It is very important we receive this information in a timely manner as we begin to place classroom supply orders for the next school year. Recently Mr. Hickey and Mrs. Kovic led many of our young musicians in a Flurries and Fun Concert. Mr. Hickey and Miss Kovacs would like to commend these musicians for their hard work and determination. Everyone in attendance was amazed at how well the students performed!
