2 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 5, 2017 The book of Malachi (the name means my messenger ) that we hear from today, was probably written during the 5 th century B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) and after the Israelites had returned from exile to Jerusalem. Despite God s love for Israel, the people had responded poorly, failing to tithe, and offering defiled food for their sacrifice, the blame for which was placed on the priests who have turned aside from the way and have caused many to falter, by their poor instruction. Paul in today s reading from I Thessalonians, continues his description of his relationship with them, reminding them that he and his coworkers were not only sharing the gospel with them, but their very selves. And in the Gospel of Matthew today, Jesus returns to the theme of appropriate behavior for religious leaders. The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses, so disciples are to do and observe that they are told but not to follow their example! That s possibly where the phrase, practice what you preach comes from and how the scribes and Pharisees are NOT a great example of this principle. It wasn t their teaching Jesus was condemning, but their behavior. This last of the Five Discourses of Jesus in Matthew s Gospel challenges OUR BEHAVIOR as we move toward judgment, HOW will we BE and LIVE as the presence of Jesus in our world? WHAT changes are we encouraged to make? WILL we BE as Christ in the world? Generations of faith-filled Catholic people have passed on to us the most precious gift that we possess the gift of faith. As this generation s good stewards, we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to our children. Children primarily learn through the examples of their parents. Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their churches and community groups and bringing their children along with them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their treasure their allowance or other earnings with special children s offering envelopes. As we know from our own experience, it takes a lifetime to develop the habits of good stewardship. God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life built around gratitude to God, lived out by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure allotted to us. There is no more precious inheritance we can pass on to our children than this lifestyle of gratitude. If you will give these instructions..., you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have followed. (1 Timothy 4:6) PLANNING AHEAD for JANUARY: We are currently in DIALOGUE about the possibility of designing and publishing a NEW Church Directory! It would include the photographs of all our parishioners and families. We re thinking about rolling it out sometime in January! What a benefit to ALL if EVERYONE responds to the invitation to have their picture taken! We haven t had an updated Parish Directory in a VERY LONG TIME! KEEP COLLECTING you Non-Perishable Food Items to FILL THE BASKETS on Thanksgiving Day! Bring all your items with you to Mass at 9:30am! Happy Day! THANKS for your financial commitment to the Parish this past weekend. Blessings and peace to all. Fr. John

Trees are quickly changing colors, wind is kicking up leaves all over the place, and I m pretty sure that it hailed for a little bit last Sunday! I ve just started to have to use heat during my morning commute! In any case, we ve made it to November just in time to settle into fall festivities, inside and outside of the Church! Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, but make sure that you don t forget that November is the month of the dead! We had an All Saints and All Souls day mass at the beginning, but the rest of the month is time for you to do your own personal memorials of those that you have loved. Will you visit the grave of a past friend? Will you have a little get together with your family to talk about all of the good times? There s so many different ways to give your loved one some respectful attention during this special month. On that note of those who have passed, have you thought about what will happen when you are no longer on Earth? Who will plan your funeral? Have you thought of any special music or readings you would like said, or have a family member be apart of the service? I am always happy to help anyone pre-plan a funeral so that you can get exactly what you want while taking that burden off of family members that may be grieving. Feel free to contact me if you would like to set up an appointment! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is ext 27. Bible Study & Faith Sharing With the death of Solomon and the division of the kingdom, God s people continue to gradually fall from their faith in Him. Come and see if your story can connect to the scriptures. Bring your Bible and join us to see if the Lord might have a message for you. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the chapel. This week we join in simple Quiet prayer. Together we find our hearts drawn more deeply into our relationship with Him. Why not give yourself the opportunity to try this method of prayer. Coffee, Tea & Thee Coffee, Tea, and Thee Will Not be meeting on Sunday 11/5/17 - We will resume again Sunday 11/19/17 after the 11:30am Mass in the Father John Garrity Center.
