2 5th Sunday of Easter May 14, 2017 Alleluia! Alleluia! These words ring out as we are in Easter Time. Alleluia! Alleluia! Let the anthems ring as we run to tell the Good News! Like every other aspect of our lives, our spiritual lives go through times of growth and change, times that are not always easy. As the church did from the beginning, we need to keep the Lord near. In today s Gospel, as the disciples are gathered around the Last Supper table, Jesus prepares the disciples for his return to the Father. They have experienced growing pains and need his reassurance. Jesus tells them that they know the way. He had shown it to them and they need to continue to show it to each other by living what He taught them. As we have heard from the Acts of the Apostles in this Easter Time, the early church experienced growing pains when Gentile and Jewish Christians were treated differently. The community prayed, asked the Spirit s guidance and seven were called forth and through the laying on of hands in the power of the Holy Spirit a new ministry; that of deacon, developed. And Peter continues to remind the community, that they are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own. So, let us put on Christ, who is our Way, Truth and Life! CONGRATULATIONS to Deacon Keith Walcutt and Deacon Tom Cully, along with their classmates, Deacon Jerry Blanda and Deacon Bob Herron who were ordained as Deacons for the Diocese of Cleveland on Saturday, May 6 th at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, by Bishop Roger Gries! Both Deacon Keith and Deacon Tom have served here at St. Mary s while in formation. CONGRATULATIONS to each and now, with great joy I want to PUBLICLY ANNOUNCE that Deacon Tom Cully has been appointed by the Apostolic Administrator Bishop Daniel Thomas to serve the Church of Cleveland at St. Mary s beginning on May 20 th! We have yet to determine his Ministry of Word and Service here at St. Mary s! But WELCOME indeed! Congratulations and WELCOME Deacon Tom! As John the Baptism calls people to repentance, Jesus moves into the spotlight. We meet in the chapel at 12:30 pm and finish by 1:15pm. No prior knowledge is needed. Background will be provided to aid in understanding as we read the scripture together. Just bring your Bible and an open heart and join us. Evening Bible Study is taking some time off and will not meet again until September. Watch the bulletin for the date of the first session. Quiet Prayer Will meet on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the chapel. Twenty minutes of quiet prayer will be followed with the reading and discussion of Richard Rohr s Everything Belongs. Come and see if quiet prayer might be a way to enhance your prayer life. 12 Step Spirituality 12 Step Spirituality meets this Thursday, May 18th, from 2:30pm - 4:00pm in the chapel to reflect on step four and the writings of Sr. Molly. All 12 steppers are welcome to join us as we seek to strengthen the spiritual aspect of our programs. Happy THIRD Year Anniversary Congratulations Fr. Max Family Perspective The Staff & Parish extend best wishes to Fr. Max on his 3rd Year Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood on May 17th. Philip said: Show us the Father. Jesus responded, I am in the Father and the Father is in me. God is in each of us, in our relationships and in our homes. The vocation of the Christian family is to live the unity with God that is already there so that all the Philips of the world will recognize the presence of God in their lives also. Theology on Tap - West Every Third Wednesday of the month, young adults in their 20 s and 30 s are invited to gather at Beachcliff Tavern ( Detroit Ave., Rocky River) at 7:00pm to hear an engaging speaker reflect on some aspect of the faith while enjoying a pint and some tasty food! Each night kicks off with a social, which includes complementary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by a speaker. Admission is only $5.00. Our next speaker on Wednesday May 17th, will be Fr. Patrick Anderson, parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish (Hudson, OH), who will be offering his reflections and insights on the saints in his talk entitled Drinking with the Saints. Theology on Tap is a great way for young adults to go deeper in their faith and connect with other young Catholics in the area. For more information, please contact Fr. She is not part of the Trinity, she is not a goddess or famous prophet. But unlike other sects of Christianity, Catholics keep Mary in their thoughts and prayers and shower her with devotion. We have paintings and icons and statues of Mary decorating our churches and homes, and we bow for her during our Creeds. Mary was not only a wonderful mother (which is an impressive feat in itself) but she brought our Lord and Savior into this earthy world! As St. Teresa of Calcutta said, She gave Jesus his body, and his body is what saved us. How can we not celebrate the one who allowed herself to be a servant for the sake of the world? Mary is truly an example of love for us all. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir and Contemporary ensemble meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: ext 27. 2nd Collection: This Weekend Catechetical Collection for Religious Education Each year in the Diocese of Cleveland a special collection is taken up in all parishes to support the Catechetical Ministries of the Office of Catechetical Formation & Education. Funding from this collection supports Newman Campus Ministry, Adult Faith Formation, Media Literacy, Parish Catechetical Leadership training and Catechist Certification. A contribution to the Catechetical Ministries is an investment in the faith formation and religious education of every person of every age in the Diocese. Please consider giving a gift to this very special collection. Catholic Charities Next weekend, we will be participating in a follow-up In-Pew Appeal for Catholic Charities, which will benefit the Hungry and Homeless throughout our Diocese. * All of the money raised from next weekend s Appeal will provide for fundamental needs, such as food, hot meals, shower facilities, and clothing, as well as future needs through training and case management programs. DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT! All new, increased and additional gifts made in the In-Pew envelopes available next weekend or donated online at will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000. All proceeds from this Appeal will be invested in services for the Hungry and Homeless, by providing for the basic needs and new beginnings for those in our Diocese who are most vulnerable. Make us a favorite! PSR Calendar of Events 5/15/2017 6:45pm St. Mary School PSR in session (Last Class) Our last PSR class will be Monday April 15 th. Registration for is now open. Forms for have been sent home. These forms can be returned, with this year s fee, to the REO when completed to assure your child s spot for next year. PSR will begin August 27 th. Sacramental Preparation For the most current information about the Parish Sacramental Preparation Program, including schedules, please visit our Parish website at St. Mary Catholic School News Corner Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul Mr. Andrew Carner, Principal Recently Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Sam attended the Ronald McDonald House 2017 Annual Meeting where the SMS Preschool was one of four recipients of the Pillar of the House Award. Each year, the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland presents its most distinguished award to companies, groups, and individuals who have given quietly. This award recognizes the commitment and constant support provided by these community partners. Our preschool program, under the direction of Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Sam, have raised funds for the last 15 years and has been able to donate over $17, to the Ronald McDonald House through the generosity of their preschool families supporting the Annual Preschool Art Show. The faculty and staff would like to thank the PTO and the many volunteers, and individual families, who helped make Teacher Appreciation Week so wonderful for all of us. The delicious food, pastries, and beverages along with the more than generous little extras were truly appreciated by everyone. Thank you again SMS parents truly are the best!! Sometimes just some extra one on one time can make the difference in a child s day. Dozen of St. Mary s Preschool students and their moms can attest to that after spending just a little time together on Sat., May 6 th for the Muffins with Mom event. The preschool students, with the help of Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Sam, hold this event as a special thank you for all moms in Thanks for what they do for us. The general consensus from our moms was that it s a nice little event to start the day off with our children. Vacation Bible School (VBS) Total Catholic Vacation Bible School is coming to: St. Adalbert June 12th - 16th 9:00am Noon Ages: 4yrs - entering 5th Grade Are you looking for a fun way to teach your children about the Catholic Faith? Look no further! St. Adalbert s VBS program, Wilderness Adventure, will teach your child about the sacraments in a fun way that they will remember. Music, Bible stories, games and snacks are all a part of this fun week. In addition they will learn about the life of a saint and how to practice virtues. 7 Our very own Music Director Angela Kovacs will be Singing here in Hudson & in New York at Carnegie Hall! 50th Wedding Anniversary Diocese of Cleveland 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Sunday, July 30, :30pm Mass For all couples who are celebrating 50 years of marriage (married in 1967), as well as couples celebrating a significant anniversary (55 or over) or who have missed previous celebrations. Seating is limited in the Cathedral. The number of guests will be determined by the seating capacity and total number registered. Registration forms are available in the Parish Rectory Office. Forms must be received no later than Monday, June 19, The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful. Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the pre-synod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan website home page, All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people.
