2 Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018 The Scriptures the past two weeks have been about the law and commandments, renewal and this week there s a pivotal SHIFT in understanding. The Gospel story marks a clear CHANGE in the unfolding story of Jesus as he asks, Who do people say that I am? Biblical scholars and authors call it the highpoint in Mark s Gospel for the truth is spoken out loud, for the first time, You are the Christ. And then he warned them not to tell anyone. Not denying Peter s exclamation, Jesus didn t want their misconception of what it means to be the Chris to mislead anyone else. The disciples were still unsure of their full understanding of who HE is and what his MISSION entails. And it s clear that Jesus was right, because right away Peter is rebuked, as he refused to hear about the pending rejection and death. Time will reveal the true meaning of You are the Christ. Faith Formation PSR began this past week and I was pleased to see so many familiar faces and families AND so many NEW faces and families as well. Coordinator, Mrs. Garr and her staff have put together the calendar of learning and events downloadable from the website. PARENTS of students who are to be in Faith Formation are to BE registered and IN CLASS on Monday evenings 6:45pm. Mrs. Garr has a REMIND APP for you to sign on and get all the needed info and details about programming, just like last year and just as a Reminder! Get it? THIS WEEKEND - SUNDAY we meet ALL the 2 nd Graders and their Parents and the 8 th Graders and their Parents AT the 9:30am Mass and AT the required Orientation Meeting 10:30am for 2 nd Grade Parents and 6:00pm for 8 th Grade Parents. THIS IS ANOTHER REMINDER: In the Diocese, each parish has a two-year commitment to faith formation in preparation for the receiving the Sacraments of Initiation. THANK YOU for your attention last weekend as the Annual Parish and School Report was presented. Copies of the Report are in the Pamphlet racks in the Mother Teresa Vestibule of the Church. And again, if you have any questions, please give one of us a call. THANK YOU for stepping up in your Grateful Giving this past year and due to your financial support we are gaining our financial stability. THANK YOU. With the close of Second Kings we move into the study of the prophet Jeremiah. Everyone is welcome no matter how limited your knowledge of scripture might be. Next week we will begin reflection of the Book of Jeremiah. Bring your Bible and an open heart and come and see what God might want to say to you. Quiet Prayer This Tuesday Quiet Prayer will begin at 12:30pm. We begin with an experience of silent prayer and follow it with a discussion of Everything Belongs. In the quiet of our hearts we will prepare ourselves to be all that God calls us to be. Come and meet with us and explore a type of prayer that allows us to listen to what God may be asking of each of us. Our session will close a little after 1:00pm. 12 Step Spirituality 12 Step will meet in the chapel from 2:30pm - 4:00pm on Thursday of this week to reflection on Step 5 and the gospel. I know that I get so wrapped up in my own life, busy with wedding planning and renovating my house, that sometimes it is easy to lose sight of the reality of our faith! This is not an easy life, it is not meant to be a once a week kind of thing. Peter is tested in the gospel reading; he hears that Jesus will suffer through humiliation and even death, and he cannot accept this! But Jesus is there to remind him that it is your actions, not the intent, that gives the path to eternal life. We are urged by Jesus to take up our crosses, and this is something that we can still do, even in modern times. Don t go looking nails and wood; instead, we can show our faith through our love for one another, through our compassion for those who need help, through our justice for those who are being persecuted. Our faith, and our actions through it, are the perfect example of taking up the cross for our Lord. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. Our Discovery Hall and Teacher Academy continue to generate quite a bit of excitement and enthusiasm for everyone, students, parents, and teachers. Parents, as a reminder, if you have any questions concerning accessing your child s Progress Book account, you may contact Mrs. Debbie Barendt at dbarendt@smsberea.org St. Mary s students have begun taking orders for the SMS PTO Magazine Fundraiser. The sale runs Sept. 10th-24th, You will find many exceptional offers on magazines such as 2 years of Parents (24 issues) for $15; Time (52 issues) for $29; Money (22 issues/2 years) for $15; Sports Illustrated (39 issues/1 year) for $25. These are just a few examples of the savings available to you. If you are interested but do not have a student at St. Mary School, you may stop at the parish rectory or school office to pick up a catalog. Thank you for your support. As a school wide Stewardship Activity, we are collecting coloring books and markers/crayons for the children at Rainbow Babies and Children s Hospital here in Cleveland. We will be collecting items throughout the month. A generous donor has offered a pizza party luncheon for the classroom with the most donations. Thank you all for your generosity toward this Stewardship activity.
