2 Fifth Sunday of Easter April 24, 2016 Dear Friends, The Fifth Sunday of Easter The first reading this weekend from the Acts of the Apostles describes the end of Paul and Barnabas first missionary journey. Along with John Mark, the team left Antioch and traveled through the various cities all the while teaching the Good News. The various visions beheld by John on the island of Patmos tell the story of the final days, culminating in the glorious vision of a new creation, in the second reading. And in the Gospel this weekend, the actions of Judas are seen as motivated not by his greed, but by the desires of the devil an action which serves to further the plan of God. Jesus says, Now is the Son of Man glorified. And as Jesus prepares for his glorification, he leaves the disciples with a new commandment: love one another! So it is for us today, to love and care for each other in the same way as Christ loves us! All of the Easters Season calls us to put on Christ with a more intense faith, hope and love and the Scripture stories remind us and teach us that it is through our sacramental life in Christ that we are given this task! May we be one! First Holy Communion Sunday NEXT WEEKEND May 1 st, 2016, we will celebrate the First Holy Communion with our Candidates! It will be a GREAT day for them and for us as we see and pray with them as they come to the Table of the Lord for the very first time. We have seen them and prayed with them this past year and today I ask for your special prayers of intercession for them as they enter into their final preparation days! They came together for a Retreat Day on Saturday (4/23) and will be rehearsing on Friday night and will be PRESENT at both the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses. SPECIAL SEATING will be RESERVED for them and their families, so I want everyone to be aware of those details. Make a special prayer and sacrifice for our Candidates this week! This chapter of Saint John I think is so fitting for us because the branch on the vine is exactly what every Co-Worker is. The Father, being the gardener, has to prune that branch to be able to bring forth much fruit and the fruit that we have to bring into the world is very beautiful the love of the Father ( As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you ) and joy ( Abide in Me that My joy may be in you ). (1983) Homebound Ministry Our Homebound Parishioners are very important to us and we want to make sure their spiritual needs are being met. If you or a friend or family member are homebound and unable to attend Mass, we would like to bring the Eucharist to you in your home. 5 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration The Annual 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the principal celebrant. Reservations are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1966). Couples who are celebrating other significant anniversaries (55 or over) or have missed previous celebrations are welcome to register and attend. Seating is limited in the Cathedral. The number of guests will be determined by the seating capacity and total number registered. All registrations should be handled through parish secretaries. Registration forms were sent to all parishes in March; couples should contact their parishes to register. Material Needed The need for Walker-Totes is increasing in Nursing Homes and Southwest Hospital Rehab Department. In need of Good Cotton Material (1 yd. or more) No Knits Please! Totes are always Free Call Jan (440) or drop off at Church Rectory Office. Thank You! Bible Study Bible Study meets in the chapel on each Tuesday at 11:00am and again at 7:00pm. We continue to explore the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians. Won t you join us to see what God might be saying to you through this beautiful epistle. Bring your Bible and an open heart and join us for one of the sessions. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel at12:30pm with our regular twenty minutes of contemplative prayer. Quiet prayer will be followed by a Thomas Keating CD on attitudes in prayer. Come and learn a little more about developing a deeper relationship with Jesus. Family Perspectives As I have love you, so you should also love one another. In Follow the Way of Love our bishops state: What you do in your family to create a community of love...is critical, not only for you but for the strength of society and our church. It is a participation in the work of the Lord, a sharing in the mission of the Church. It is holy. A high calling indeed? The everyday actions and interactions of family members are one of the main ways Christ acts in the world. Families, be true to your calling. Ask the Holy Spirit for help in being families who love one another. Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes ATTENTION: STUDENTS GRADE K-12 By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy St. Mary s is going to do something very exciting for one of the upcoming feast days in Ordinary Time! A special committee has been working together to create energy for the feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, which is May 29 this year. Students grade K-12 are invited to celebrate the feast day with a procession of youths at the weekend masses! Joined with the celebrating priest, the children will walk in at the beginning of mass with instruments, streamers, and a beautiful hand-sewn banner collaborated by the students of St. Mary School. Father John and Father Max have met with the students to give a lesson on this feast day, also known as Corpus Christi, and the children will be creating imagery for the banner. Students from other schools and in high school are also welcome; in fact we encourage you to join us! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also has rehearsals on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets to rehearse on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Garrity Center) First Sacraments It is very important for both our candidates and parents attend the remaining activities/meetings. Please mark your calendars in bold letters for these final events! All Candidates are expected to attend a retreat to prepare for their reception of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Their retreat is scheduled for Saturday April 23 rd from 9:00am until 12:00pm at the Fr. Garrity Center. Parents can drop off and pick up their children at the Fr. Garrity Center. On Friday April 29 th our First Communion Candidates will have a practice for their First Communion Mass. Candidates who will celebrate their First Communion at the 9:30am Mass will practice in the church at 6:00pm. Candidates who will celebrate their First Communion at the 11:30am Mass will practice at 7:00pm in the church. Please make every effort to attend this practice. On Sunday May 1 st our First Sacrament Candidates will celebrate their First Holy Communion at the 9:30am and 11:30am Mass. Since their ceremony will be part of the normal Sunday Masses PSR Our last Littles PSR session will be Sunday April 24 th. Our last class of the PSR year will be Monday May 2 nd. We will have our Closing Mass on Monday May 9 th. There will be a End of Year celebration in the Fr. Garrity Center after Mass. Please plan on attending with your students. This year s theme was Patriotism. If you drove by the school you saw the entire front half circle of the driveway lined with 58 American flags purchased by St. Mary s parishioners and SMS parents honoring loved ones who served in the United States Armed Forces. On Monday, the day began with an all school assembly and the Strongsville VFW Honor Guard presenting the colors, Ms. Paula Cope presenting information on the USO, and students along with the faculty and staff participated in a sing-a-long of all patriotic songs. On Tuesday, teachers arranged to have veteran military SMS staff members and parents talk to students about their time in the service, and thanks to Pat Catan s for providing a patriotic lapel pin for SMS students and faculty. On Wednesday, the entire school participated in a Red, White, and Blue dress down day and parish and school veterans participated in a tailgate luncheon with photos and music. Thursday was filled with each grade level hosting specific guest speakers throughout the day. The week ended with a Vietnam veteran luncheon with students and Fr. Joseph Piskura, also a Vietnam Veteran, presiding over an all school prayer service for veterans and faculty and staff. Our Right to Read Week will continue into next week with all the students continuing to participate in our Read-A-Thon generating donations for the local USO. A very special THANK YOU to Mrs. Merri Jo Meehan for coordinating such a spectacular event for everyone!! We are beginning to plan for our Eighth Grade graduation. For 20 years St. Mary s has been fortunate to be able to provide financial scholarships to four of our graduating students that are going on to a Catholic high school. St. Mary s School can only continue to provide this opportunity to our graduating students with your help. All donations are tax deductible and your generosity is greatly appreciated. 7 Vacation Bible School Get Ready for Summer! Vacation Bible School is back with a new date and theme! Join St. Adalbert Parish as the host for VBS in the cluster parishes (St. Mary s, Berea and St. Mary of the Falls) June 13-17, 2016 from 9:00am 12:00noon. Planning will begin in April.
