2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 14, 2018 The winter portion of Ordinary Time is but a few weeks, from now January 9 th until February 11 th, We may think this time is ordinary, in the sense of run of the mill. However, the term ordinary comes from the word ordinal, or numbered, as the Sundays in Ordinary Time are numerically ordered. This time between the close of Christmas Time with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord on January 8 th and Ash Wednesday s introduction to Lent on February 14 th does not have to be run of the mill. It can be a time in which our faith can flourish and grow, greening in the spirit of this season s liturgical color. Perhaps one of the great opportunities of Ordinary Time whether in winter or summer is to make our discipleship visible, not only through our words, but also through our deeds. In this way, Ordinary Time becomes anything BUT ordinary! [excerpts from Sourcebook 2018] So, what s happening here at St. Mary that may suit my interest or satisfy my desire to become more involved? If discipleship is who and what we are about, here at St. Mary, then HOW will I become a more devoted disciple? I come to church week after week and isn t that enough, you may ask? But we know discipleship is more than merely adhering to the laws of the church and the obligations I take on as a fellow Christian. Being a disciple is about growing in a relationship with God AND one another and that happens IN community. Today s Gospel of John (1:35-42) records Jesus response to Andrew and a companion disciple of John, both of whom followed Jesus, with, Come, and you will see when asked by them where he was staying, Come, and you will see. Maybe that could be our INVITATION to grow in our relationship with God and one another as we embark on our journey this New Year? Come, and you will see. Our Parish Adult Faith and Education Coordinator, John Mastandrea has a new Study Series beginning this week, Who Am I to Judge? Sound captivating? Wednesday nights, 7:30pm. That Man Is You begins again on Thursday nights, 7:15pm. s Outreach Committee is forming and welcomes new members and could be quite satisfying. I know Barb Goebl s Bible Study Series on Tuesdays or Quiet Prayer may be the answer to your need to become a more fervent disciple. There s a Movie Night coming up perhaps that s your like? Community happens when we unite for a common purpose and the Lenten Fish Fry is just around the corner. Helpers and volunteers are ALWAYS appreciated. And let s not forget that coworkers are ALWAYS needed to enhance the Church for the various seasons. Planners with thoughtful design may be a great way for you to get involved! And maybe someone who just wants to iron or water plants is out there. It s ALL GOOD! Lectors and Servers are ALWAYS welcome to step up and help, as are USH- ERS. I know lots of people say I could never do that, however, have you ever tried? Come, and you will see. That s just a short list of the LOTS here that happens to help us grow in our relationship with God and one another this year. Come, and you will see. Contact Linda Durica or the Parish Office HEED THE CALLING Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy Thank you again to all who were able to attend our Hymn Festival! It was a beautiful program, and the choir and instrumentalists did fantastically! Everyone singing together is such a wonderful example of community faith, and I can t be any more pleased. If you enjoyed the hymn festival, feel free to invite your friends to next year s! I hear it might in April next year You ll have to wait and see! This week s readings are all about hearing the call of God, and accepting your status as a child of God in your hearts. I love these readings, because it gives me a great reason to use one of my favorite hymns during a weekend mass. Here I Am, Lord is a popular hymn about choosing God, and is many times used during funerals, but texts are multi-faceted and Isaiah 6 can be used for many situations. God, who is there for all, is asking for someone to help spread his message and his aid, so who will help? It is a calling to a higher place of faith. The prelude for this weekend is also similar, entitled Here I Am, gives us comfort that God will be with us during the best and worst of times, as long as we give our hearts up to him. What a beautiful rock of faith we have in our Lord! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. There were 15 schools participating this year, entering a total of 190 works of art. Several of our students entered an art piece in this and three received an award.
