2 Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15, 2017 So, right before we move into the Fifth Discourse or the Sermon on the End Times of Matthew s Gospel in chapter 23, we hear this parable of welcome and maybe, not so welcome for some. The final words of today s Gospel, Many are invited, but few are chosen gives us some insight into Matthew s community as his unique parables have done. Another wake-up call for the followers of Christ! We have come to know about the divisions within Matthew s community and the disagreements among the have and have nots; the who is and who isn t; and the like. Matthew is doing his best to get the divisions to some accord or consensus. In today s parable, the king is regarded as generous as he sends out his servants to invite any and all to the wedding banquet after others rejected his invitation. And once in the feast, someone is cast out for not wearing a wedding garment. What s that lesson? We need to dress for the banquet, or, we need to approach the Lord, the Master, the generous King in the garments of humility, generosity, justice and remember last week s morale to the story; and not with entitlement or claim. We need to dress for the banquet clothed in gratitude and mercy. It s the same message from Paul s Letter to the Philippians today I know how to live in humble circumstances, I know also how to live with abundance. May we be grateful for what we have in abundance or want and give God glory and thanks at all times. (See, the lessons ALL come together as we get to the final discourse)! Parents and Families have been INVITED by our Adult Faith and Education Coordinator to share faith on Monday nights, during PSR. Have you stopped in and had a question or two answered? Been inspired? Have you used the Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families with your family? You all got the tools! How about Women of Grace? Been there? Shared with the others your faith journey? Stop in on Tuesdays at 7pm. OR How about That Man is You? Been there? Shared with others your faith journey? Stop in on Thursdays at 7:15pm. Many THANKS for your financial commitment to the Parish this past weekend. Blessings and peace to all. Fr. John

Catholics across the country will be celebrating Priesthood Sunday on October 29, It is a day set aside to celebrate the importance of the gift of priesthood in the life of the Church. It is a time for us to reflect on the ministry that our priests share with us when we gather at the Table of the Lord - when we call in our times of need. Consider sharing a personal note or card of thanks to Fr. John and Fr. Max. Together we pray that many of our young people will be inspired by the ministry and witness of our priests. May their hearts be open to hearing and responding to God s call in their lives. God loves me Mother Teresa Some months back a man had been picked up from the streets of Melbourne, an alcoholic, who had been for years in that state; and the Sisters took him to their Home of Compassion. The way they touched him, the way they took care of him suddenly, to him it was clear: God loves me. He left home, never touched alcohol again, went back to his family, to his children, to his job. And after, when he got his first salary, he came to the Sisters and gave the money and said: I want you to do for them, to be the love of God to them as you have been to me. That simple work. We hear of the parable of the wedding for the king s son. The king invites many people, but those of higher esteem either ignore the invitation or torture the messenger. Rather, random people off of the street are the ones who end up attending, and one of those people didn t put effort into his outfit and was kicked out! This is clearly a sort of metaphor for those who are invited to the kingdom of heaven. And I think that most important of all, it is your effort, not your upbringing, that decides whether you can stay. God does not pick and choose who he wants to join him in heaven. His invite list is quite clear: All. However, with the invitation comes the expectation of being the best you can be, and working to always improve your quality of life and that of those around you. All are definitely welcome, but you have to want to be there! No matter what chapter of life you may be in, as long as you are always honestly pushing yourself to live a Christ-like life, then you are on the right path. Take time today to reflect if you are trying to make this easy, and yet very responsibly charged task that God has given us! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is ext 27. Bible Study/Faith Sharing, Quiet Prayer & Prayer Shawl Bible Study / Faith Sharing / Quiet Prayer / Prayer Shawl will meet at the following days & times this week in the Chapel: Prayer Shawl: Sunday 10/15/17 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm Bible Study: Tuesday 10/17/17 from 11:00am - 12:00pm Quiet Prayer: Tuesday 10/17/17 from 12:20pm - 1:00pm Family Perspective The king in today s gospel sent wedding invitations to all his close friends... people like himself. But the party wasn t successful until he opened the doors to everyone... to people not like himself. The Christian family opens its heart and doors to everyone because we know that joy happens through sharing with others beyond our own family. Charity begins and extends beyond home. Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to Chat With The Pope to learn more about his missions. Scan this year s World Mission Sunday poster using Facebook Messenger from your mobile device, or learn more at ChatWithThePope.org

St. Mary Catholic School News Corner Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul Mr. Andrew Carner, Principal Recently the Eighth grade students had the opportunity to attend High School Night hosted by the Academy of St. Adalbert. Many local Catholic high schools were present to share information and answer questions. The Eighth grade students have also begun to shadow at the local Catholic high schools they are interested in. Parents and students, please remember, only two shadow days per student are permitted. In last weeks School News Corner we listed the Student Council representatives. In this listing we inadvertently omitted the Secretary, Maddie Justice. We apologize for the oversight. There is a new addition to our school gym. Visitors and students all get to enjoy a beautiful hand-made quilt Mrs. Gail Wetzel spent countless hours on over this past summer. The quilt depicts the St. Mary colors and our Alma Mater. Thank you Mrs. Wetzel for this beautiful work of art. It is truly a gift for all! Don t forget the deadline for the Yankee Candle is quickly approaching.
