2 Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 24, 2017 In today s Gospel reading, we hear a parable that is unique to Matthew and gives us insights into Matthew s community, who struggled to understand who does and doesn t belong, or rather, who s in and who s not. Clearly there were divisions in Matthew s community and this and other unique Matthean parables underscore that the final judgment is God s and God s mercy and generosity are wholly gratuitous. Today s parable from chapter 18, the Fourth Sermon or the Discourse on the Church, tells of a landowner going in search of laborers throughout the day, and at the end of the day pays each the same amount, the usual daily wage. The first laborers grumble that they are not given more and the landowner counters with, Are you envious because I am generous? The owner s generosity was questioned and measured by the workers. He had established the terms, the limits and the boundaries from the get-go with each group he met that day and at the end of the day, his response is true, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me on the usual daily wage? Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? The first moral of the story is to not measure or compare one with another. This is where we get into trouble and may perhaps be part of the divisions in Matthew s community. Also, remember, that this parable unique to Matthew is also a shift in thinking for them (and for us, I might add). Don t compare and you won t be disappointed, hurt, judgmental, revengeful, etc. Be ALWAYS generous as the landowner and you will live well! I am traveling this week, celebrating the Jubilee Anniversary of a number of my close priest friends and families. Be home soon! SAVE THE DATE is in order for the Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Raffle for the support of Fr. Garrity Faith and Education Fund. The DATE will be on Saturday December 2 nd in the Fr. Garrity Center. Doors open at 5:30pm with Dinner served at 6:00pm. TICKETS for the Dinner will be on sale SOON as well as TICKETS for the Raffle. Prizes TBD! So, SAVE THE DATE Saturday, December 2 nd, 2017 from 5:30pm 8:30pm. Many THANKS for your financial commitment to the Parish this past weekend. Blessings and peace to all. Fr. John

Often, we think our worth is measured in what we are paid. But this is false our true worth is not measured by money or possessions. God is generous to us all. Fairness is an important family value. However, families function better by first promoting generosity and gratitude rather than feeding envy by promoting equality and a preoccupation with keeping score. Weekend Collection s Collection for 9/17/17: $10, Thank you for your generosity to the Parish. Mother Teresa Do not let money make you forget Do not let money so preoccupy you as to forget that we and our people are more important to God than all the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. Therefore, try more and more to understand that yours is a way of life the way of Jesus that will lead you to the perfect love of God and your neighbors. That is holiness. For holiness is not the luxury of the few, but it is a simple duty for you and for me. Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)

What makes certain hymns better than others? Is it following a strict lyric pattern? Is it only using tunes from the 1970 s? I would say that the best way to make a good hymn is to make it memorable and familiar! You may not know this, but many of Christian hymn tunes are borrowed from classical music! For example, everyone knows the song Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee, but did you know that it came from the fourth movement of Ludwig van Beethoven s 9th symphony? The bold and moving hymn tune of O Sacred Head Now Wounded actually was a secular love song written by Hans Leo Hassler; J.S. Bach took the tune and arranged it for his St. Matthew Passion. Even today we are singing one of these borrowed tunes with our gathering hymn. The hymn tune of O God, Beyond all Praising was taken from Gustav Holst s orchestral suite, the Planets. The melody comes in the middle of the fourth movement, entitled Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, a bright and airy piece representing the mythological Roman god with the same name. The tune for this hymn was named THAXTED, a town in Essex, England, where Holst and his family lived for many years. Many of the best hymns are so good because they are based on historical, well weathered classical tunes from the past! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: ext 27. Bible Study & Faith Sharing The story of Solomon continues on Tuesday from 11:00a- 12:00noon in the chapel.
