2 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate and pray the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. While the Lord is a God of justice, as Sirach (First Reading) notes, our God is justice wrapped in mercy. So, though God has no favorites, those who are weak, oppressed, orphaned, or widowed readily gain God s attention. Likewise, the servants of God and the petitions of the lowly reach the heavens and await the Most High s response. Second Timothy (Second Reading) draws to a close this weekend as the aged and imprisoned Paul offers his final words to his beloved Timothy. In language reminiscent of the prophets, Paul recounts his loneliness and suffering. And the Gospel parable of the self-righteous Pharisee and the repentant tax collector is unique to Luke and echoes the themes found in Mary s Magnificat the arrogant of mind and heart are dispersed while the lowly are lifted up. Each of us is poor in our own way because we are all sinners. We need God s rich mercy to heal us, transform us and raise us up. If we can admit our need for God s mercy, like the tax collector, and give God the glory, like the author of Second Timothy, our prayer can pierce the clouds and will find rest in the God who judges justly, affirms the right, and will not delay in answering our prayers. (Living the Word 2016) FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP Have you checked out the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website and downloaded information on Faithful Citizenship? We are to be all love, all faith, all purity, for the sake of the poor we serve. And once we have learned to seek God and His will, our contacts with the poor will become the means of great sanctity to ourselves and to others. 5 Theology on Tap - West Next weekend, Sunday 10/30/16 is Priesthood Sunday. Let us all join together on this special day in praying for Fr. John, Fr. Max and all priests, in praising God for their courage and their generosity. Send a simple note, a smile or a phone call to assure them of your care and gratitude for their presence in the life of our church. World Mission Sunday Propagation of the Faith This weekend is World Mission Sunday (October 22-23) Your ongoing support of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,111 dioceses through Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. Your generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and catechists to reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances. The World Mission Sunday celebration highlights the outreach of local churches through priests, religious and laity among the poor and marginalized half a world away. Lifechanging help is provided to mission churches in territories covering more than half the globe. There will be a second collection this weekend to support this mission. Every Second Wednesday of the month, young adults in their 20 s and 30 s are invited to gather at Beachcliff Tavern ( Detroit Ave., Rocky River) at 7:00pm to hear an engaging speaker reflect on some aspect of the faith while enjoying a pint and some tasty food! Each night kicks off with a social, which includes complementary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by a speaker. Admission is only $5.00. Our next speaker on Wednesday November 16th, will be Fr. Barry Gearing pastor of St. Adalbert Parish in Berea, who will be offering his reflections in his talk entitled, I m Too Busy! Reclaiming the Virtue of Leisure. Theology on Tap is a great way for young adults to go deeper in their faith and connect with other young Catholics in the area. For more information, please contact Fr. Tim Roth (440) / frtim@samparish.org Loose Change for Life Loose Change for Life continues through the month of October. Baby Bottles are available in the Mother Teresa Vestibule for you to TAKE and FILL with your donations! Please join us in supporting the Cleveland Pregnancy Center through this Life Saving Campaign. The Cleveland Pregnancy Center is a nonprofit, life-affirming, faith -based organization offering pregnancy resources and limited, obstetrical services to women facing an unplanned pregnancy. Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes HUMBLE PRAYER By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy Last week we saw how different types of prayer can invigorate our faithful lives. This week, the gospel tells us that the one who humbles himself will be exalted. This is a great prompt to try out a fresh style of prayer: Taizé worship! This prayer is about an hour s worth of meditative, repetitive music that wraps beautiful Scripture together with intermittent silence for a peaceful environment. It came from the Taizé Community, an ecumenical monastic gathering of Christian brothers in the city of Taizé, France. While it started in France, Taizé worship is done worldwide. The people are called to live simple, spiritual lives, focusing on reconciliation and kindness. This is a perfect opportunity in the Year of Mercy for us to collect ourselves in prayer and self-reflection. There are several different churches and retreat homes around Cleveland that offer Taizé services, and I highly recommend that you attend a service! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: ext 27.

Our own Fr. Marty spent more than 25 years of ministry in Eastern Africa. Our Lady of Nazareth School is located in the middle of Nairobi s largest and worst slum, Mukuru, where 350,000 people struggle to survive. In Swahili, mukuru means garbage dump. The roads there are unpaved. Ramshackle houses of tin, plastic and wood have dirt floors, no running water, no sanitation, and no electricity. Hunger, disease and abuse are common. For the 1,800 children enrolled at Our Lady of Nazareth School, education offers an opportunity to escape this desperate situation. We thank all of our Kindergarten families for helping to make a positive change in a young child s life. Pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins!
