2 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 20, 2016 Dear Friends, Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion opens Holy Week with the first of our yearly proclamations of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Palm Sunday passion focuses clearly on Jesus suffering and death. Today s liturgy moves from loud shouts of Hosanna! in Jesus favor (the gospel BEFORE the procession) to angry demands for his crucifixion, Crucify him! Crucify him! From Jesus lips we hear his words of forgiveness, his words of welcome to the repentant thief, and his words of surrender as he gives his spirit over to his Father. The words from the lips of our Lord Jesus direct us in our proper celebration of the Holy Week Services. We need to celebrate the Lord s forgiveness in our lives SO join us in the celebration of Confession on Sunday evening at 6:30pm. 6 priest friends of ours will be here to pray with us and offer us the absolution we desire to live in the fullness of the Lord. On Holy Thursday we begin the THREE DAYS (TRIDUUM) of prayer that celebrate our call to BE SERVANTS as we hear John s Gospel of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and GIVING us the same challenge As I have done, so you must do! Holy Thursday celebrates the GREAT INSTITUTION of the Eucharist and as such we NEED to be here as one in celebration of the greatest GIFT given to us. Jesus welcomes the repentant thief while hanging on the Cross, as we hear in the passion chant on Good Friday. We are likewise CALLED to be a welcoming people SO let s take Jesus example and make it ours. He surrenders to the hands of his crucifiers and is laid in a tomb, awaiting the glorious Resurrection! So let us on Holy Saturday celebrate his death and Resurrection in the Solemn Easter Vigil at night. If you have NEVER been COME and SEE because Holy Saturday VIGIL is truly an amazing celebration of wonder and awe, mystery and fullness as we gather AROUND the fire outside the front doors of the Church, beginning at 8:30pm. Gathered and bathed in the warmth and brightness of the Easter Fire we LIGHT for the very first time the Paschal Candle which is a SIGN and SYMBOL of the power and presence of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World! We process into Church, following the Light and then hear this truly incredible chanted prayer TO THE PASCHAL CANDLE The Paschal Proclamation (Exsultet) asking for mercy and strength in our lives! Then we listen and respond to the wonderful stories of creation, salvation and redemption 4 Old Testament Readings and Psalms that recapture for us OUR lives from creation to redemption and then St. Paul s Letter to the Romans about our baptism and then SINGING the Alleluia for the very FIRST time since Lent began, we hear the story of the Lord s Resurrection! Jeremy Hutchison has been yearning to become one with us and then we celebrate his Baptism! He is one with us called, blest and sent to BECOME like Christ in the world. And then Brian Whitlock, Katherine Pavella, Tom Knapp and Barbara Hunter will be received and together ALL will be confirmed and receive the Holy Eucharist for the very first time! WHAT A WELCOME! Don t you want to be a part of this? It is WHO we are and HOW we celebrate. Everyone Come and See and celebrate the Wonder of the Lord s Death and Resurrection! Father John

Today in young people of the world, Jesus lives His Passion, in the suffering, in the hungry, the handicapped young people in that child who eats a piece of bread crumb by crumb, because when that piece of bread is finished, there will be no more and hunger will come again. That is a Station of the Cross. Are you there with that child? Excerpted from: Such a Vision of the Street, 282. (1985) Bulletin Prayer List Please remember in prayer all who are ill or homebound, especially the following: Anitra Blunschi Karen M. Michael VonDuhn Our Sick and Homebound Parishioners are very important to us and we want to make sure your needs are being met. Our Homebound Ministry can minister in many ways, especially to bring the Eucharist to those not able to attend Mass. Families please help us update our Bulletin Prayer List - Please call the Rectory Office at (440) Mass Intentions If you would like to schedule a Mass Intention for 2016 the Mass Book is Open for your intentions. Your request can be made by contacting the parish office (440) , at jabraham@stmaryberea.com or by mail. The usual Mass stipend is $10.00 per Mass. We will do our best to accommodate your requests. Weekend Collection Due to Early Submission of the Bulletin / Collection for 3/13/16 will be reported in next weekends bulletin. Family Perspectives When Jesus died, Mary grieved alone. Most friends and followers had fled to safety except for a few acquaintances. We have friends and neighbors who have lost a loved one and feel alone in their grief. Resist the urge to avoid them. Even when we don t know what to say, we can comfort the sorrowing by just listening and compassionately being with them. Anniversary Wishes If you will be having a wedding anniversary in the month of March and would like your names listed in the bulletin, please call the parish office (440) or jabraham@stmaryberea.com

With Palm Sunday we enter Holy Week. This might just be the busiest, if not most exciting, week in the Liturgical Year. We start off with Palm Sunday, welcoming Jesus to Jerusalem, follow through with the Triduum, which includes Holy Thursday, the celebration of the Last Supper, Good Friday, the acknowledgement of his death, and Easter Vigil, the first celebration of Christ s resurrection. Easter Sunday wraps up Holy Week with our joyful cries for Jesus rising from the dead. It s an emotional rollercoaster of faith! We will also be welcoming 5 new members to the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil mass! If you have never attended the Easter Vigil mass before, I highly recommend that you do this year. While it is late and a longer service, it is a beautiful liturgy and completely worth it. Give it a try! A reminder to Traditional Choir: We will have one more rehearsal that lasts until 9:15pm this week. Thank you for all of your continued hard work as we progress towards Holy Week! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also has rehearsals on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets to rehearse on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: ext 27.
