2 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ May 29, 2016 Dear Friends, Today the Church celebrates Corpus Christi - The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Today s Feast is a liturgical Solemnity celebrating the tradition and belief in the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and his Real Presence in the Eucharist. Today s Feast emphasizes the joy of the institution of the Eucharist. This past month, Fr. Max and I both had the opportunity to TEACH a lesson on today s Feast to all of our Day School students. Thought I would share a little bit about the institution of this Feast in a Did you know column? So, Did you know? In 1263 a German priest, Peter of Prague, stopped at Bolsena, Italy while on a pilgrimage to Rome. He is described as being a pious priest, but one who found it difficult to believe that Christ was actually present in the consecrated Host. While celebrating Holy Mass above the tomb of St. Christina (located in the church named for this martyr), he had barely spoken the words of Consecration when blood started to seep from the consecrated Host and trickle over his hands onto the altar and the corporal. Fr. Peter was immediately confused. At first he attempted to hide the blood, but then he interrupted the Mass and asked to be taken to the neighboring city of Orvieto, the city where Pope Ur ban IV was then residing. Pope Urban IV listened to Fr. Peter s account and absolved him. He then sent emissaries for an immediate investigation. When all the facts were ascertained, he ordered the Bishop of the diocese to bring to Orvieto the Host and the linen cloth bearing the stains of blood. With archbishops, cardinals and other Church dignitaries in attendance, the Pope met the procession and, amid great pomp, and had the relics placed in the cathedral. The linen corporal bearing the spots of blood is still reverently enshrined and exhibited in the Cathedral of Orvieto, Italy. It is said that Pope Urban IV was prompted by this miracle to commission St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the Proper for a Mass and an Office honoring the Holy Eucharist as the Body of Christ. One year after the miracle, in August of 1264, Pope Urban IV introduced the saint's composition, and by means of a papal bull instituted the feast of Corpus Christi. Today some of our Day School Students will be singing and processing with us in celebration of this ancient Solemnity. They have created a couple of banners marking the occasion and will be carrying these in procession at the 11:30am Mass. Let us renew our love for the Lord in His Real Presence in the Eucharist! He understood that we have a terrible hunger for God. He understood that we have been created to be loved, and so He made Himself a Bread of Life and He said, Unless you eat My flesh and drink My blood, you cannot live, you cannot love, you cannot serve. You must eat this Bread and the goodness of the love of Christ to share His understanding love. He also wants to give us the chance to put our love for Him in a living action. He makes Himself the hungry one, not only for bread, but for love. He makes Himself the naked one, not only for a piece of cloth but for that understanding love, that dignity, human dignity. He makes Himself the homeless one, not only for the piece of a small room, but for that deep sincere love for the other, and this is the Eucharist. This is Jesus, the Living Bread that He has come to break with you and me. 5 Family Perspectives Today Jesus feeds over five thousand and has leftovers! Notice that this meal is not fast food, nor is it only about eating. It is a larger event of gathering, teaching, healing, blessing and engaging others in making the meal happen. When we eat as a family, it is important to take the time to gather, talk, nourish relationships, pray, and participate together in making the meal happen. Meals like this give life that result in leftovers for others beyond the family. The works of mercy are energized by these meals. Welcome - Newly Baptized Welcome this weekend the newly baptized member of our Parish - Emma Ann Maree Rusch Bible Study Bible Study meets in the chapel on each Tuesday at 11:00am and again at 7:00pm. This week we will be finishing up our study of I Corinthians and preparing to begin the story of Joshua. Bring your Bible and join us discovering how much of what we read in scripture can teach us to live in the world today. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel at12:30pm. We honor the true presence of Christ in the host and wine that is consecrated at the altar. Today you will be able to see two beautiful banners celebrating this feast on the altar, created by the classes of K-12 at St. Mary s School and sewn together by Carol Carrig, a member of our Contemporary Choir. In many countries on this feast day, the entire congregation will follow the priest and the Blessed Sacrament held in a monstrance out into the streets in joyful procession! I have prepared a lovely organ piece by Gerald Near based on the Gregorian chant, O sacrum convivium. The Latin lyrics translate as follows: O sacred banquet! in which Christ is received, the memory of his Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory to us is given. Alleluia. Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. St. Mary Catholic School News Corner Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul Mr. Andrew Carner, Principal Students in grades 4 & 5 went to Hale Farm and Village last week for an all class fieldtrip. Students had the opportunity to see what it was like years ago as Hale Farm and Village workers took them back in time through cooking demonstrations, historic structures, farm animals and Early American craft & trade. This past week was Spirit Week at St. Mary s. Students in grades 1-8 had the opportunity to wear SMS spirit wear for a Blue & Gold Day, Crazy Hair & Hat Day, 50 s & 60 s Day, Super Hero Day and the week concluded with our Grandparents Day celebration. Students also had the opportunity to show off their talents during our Talent Show this past Wednesday. It was truly inspiring to see all the talent these young students possess. Please contact the Rectory Office at (440) th Wedding Anniversary Celebration The Annual 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the principal celebrant. Reservations are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1966). Couples who are celebrating other significant anniversaries (55 or over) or have missed previous celebrations are welcome to register and attend. Seating is limited in the Cathedral. The number of guests will be determined by the seating capacity and total number registered. All registrations should be handled through parish secretaries. Registration forms were sent to all parishes in March; couples should contact their parishes to register. Vacation Bible School Get Ready for Summer! Vacation Bible School is back with a new date and theme! Join St. Adalbert Parish as the host for VBS in the cluster parishes (St. Mary s, Berea and St. Mary of the Falls) June 13-17, 2016 from 9:00am 12:00noon. Planning will begin in April.
