2 5th Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018 The word, remain, fills today s readings: remain on the vine, in Jesus and allow his words to remain in us. One meaning of remain is to stay in the same place or with the same person or group. We stay on the vine by staying with Jesus and those who belong to him. In that way we invite his words to stay within us. In understanding the word, we learned to remain, entails an intimate, reciprocal, and enduring relationship with Jesus. Our relationship with him will bear fruit of living his commandments, so others can see that we remain in him and he remains in us. That sounds a lot like Game On, to me! Saul, the persecutor, had an encounter on the road to Damascus, in which Jesus invited Saul to stay with him and Jesus to remain in Saul. It wasn t UNTIL they saw change in Saul that the early church moved from fearing him to trusting him. Barnabas was the witness who invited them to open their eyes. Saul s words and actions bore the fruit of his and Jesus new relationship. For Jesus words to remain in us, we need to make time to read, listen to, and reflect on them. Let them prune away whatever does not reflect Jesus way. When Jesus remains in us and we remain in him, our words and deeds bear his fruit. St. Frances de Sales taught that it is not enough to carry the Lord on our tongue, speaking God s praise, in our hearts, sharing our love and affection for God. We MUST carry the Lord in our arms by good works. Without these works, the other two ways of carrying the Lord do not amount to much. REMAIN IN CHRIST today, STAY WITH HIM, SHOW that his words remain in you and CARRY him in your arms by your good works. [Living the Word 2018] Game On! PRAYERFUL CONGRATULATIONS go out to Deacon Martin James Dober of St. Mary and eight classmates as they were ordained to the Diaconate on Friday evening at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist! What a wonderful celebration of service and joy as these men promised their obedience in service to Bishop Perez and to the people to whom they have been called to serve. Bishop was visibly filled with great pride and joy as he looked intently at each Deacon as they responded, I do, with the help of God! May our prayers for these men and ALL who are in service and may be considering a life of service and consecrated life to the Lord will remain in Him and be faithful and joy filled servants! NEXT WEEKEND we will CELEBRATE First Communion Sunday at the 11:30am Mass! All of our Candidates for First Communion shared Breakfast with the Lord Saturday with their parents and teachers, practiced and prayed are READY to receive the Lord for the very first time on Sunday May 6 th! PRAY for them and with them as they celebrate another step of their initiation process, begun at Baptism! WELCOME boys and girls! I can t express enough THANKS for your generosity in the Sunday Collection! Your promise to financially support the Church is a great expression of both love and kindness. THE FRESH AIR OF SPRING Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy This week, next week, and the week after will be a flurry of different songs and celebrations! With First Communion, Confirmation, and Deacon Martin Dober s first mass at St. Mary, we will be doing a lot of changes to reflect the readings, acclamations, and events! This weekend, I am using a new hymn to perfectly compliment the Gospel reading from John. Titled, Vine and Branches, this song takes the wonderful message of the reading s metaphor and puts it into song that clearly highlights the importance of love in faith and the mystery of our communion with Christ. I hope that you find it enjoyable! As we will be singing a song of praise after communion each weekend mass, I will continue to include the lyrics so that all can join in with our hymn! We worship and adore You, Bowing down before You. Songs of praises singing, Hallelujahs ringing. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, Amen. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. Carner, Principal Recently the junior high students held the second annual Spring Fling in honor our Mikey Waters and Autism Awareness. The event was held at the Fr. Garrity Center directly after school and was a huge success. The event raised $ to benefit the Rosemary Center, which is a facility that serves those with Autism. Various contests were held and music entertained over 50 SMS students in attendance. A special thanks to Chick-fil-A of Strongsville for providing complimentary catering and to Mr. Jim Ziegler for the generosity of this time to talent to be our DJ for the event. Also, a special thank you to all the parents that donated plenty of food and beverages for the students to enjoy. It was wonderful to see the community come together for such a worthwhile cause. The 7 th & 8 th grade students recently went on a field trip see the movie A Wrinkle in Time. This is a science fantasy adventure film and follows a young girl, who with the help of three travelers, sets off on a quest to find her father, who went missing after discovering a new planet. This field trip allowed the students to compare and contrast the differences and similarities between the film and the book, which the 8 th grade students recently read in class. The 7 th grade students had the opportunity to preview the story and compare and contrast the novel as they are currently reading the book. Our Kindergarten students have been busy observing and measuring caterpillars as they learn about the butterfly lifecycle. This has been a great learning opportunity for the minds of our young students. 7 A middle school drama set to music what could be better? AFDA s Spring Production is 13 The Musical. The production will be held on Friday, May 4 at 7 pm, and Saturday, May 5 at 2 and 7 pm in Friendship Hall at Christ United Church. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.
