2 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 6, 2016 Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate and pray the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The first reading from the second Book of Maccabees, records the faithful adherence to Jewish religious practices, while experiencing their struggles under the persecution of Antiochus IV. In today s passage we hear of the faithful resistance of a mother with her seven sons who demonstrates fidelity and nobility in the face of martyrdom. Our second reading today is the second letter of St. Paul to Timothy and he encourages the community to good works and to not neglect the instruction received from Paul, trusting that the Lord is faithful and will strengthen and sustain them In today s gospel we are introduced to the Sadducees, who did not believe in the concept of the resurrection. They were a conservative, aristocratic group that controlled the temple and priesthood. Though conservative liturgically, they were more liberal on Jewish practices and Hellenistic (Greek) culture. Against this backdrop are the more well-known Pharisees who believed in the resurrection of the dead, advocated strict adherence to the law to ensure purity, and saw the synagogue as the focus of Jewish life. In this contest of groups, Jesus explains the concept of resurrection in light of the coming reign of God. It s a set of tough readings this week. Hear, listen and do your best to follow! If we do, if there is no mystery, we will not be afraid. There is also the question of conscience I could have done better. Very often as we live, so we die. Death is nothing but a continuation of life, the completion of life. The surrendering of the human body. But the heart and the soul live forever. They do not die. Every religion has eternity another life; this life is not the end; people who believe it is, fear death. Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes SINGING WITH THE KIDS By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy This weekend at the 9.30am mass, we will be singing a special Gospel Acclamation as we celebrate with our Sacramental Candidates. This song is sung at every school mass. Here are the lyrics so that you can sing along, too! Woah, we sing halleluiah! Woah, we sing amen! Hear the sound of the saints as we march onto Zion, Singing alleluia, amen! Singing alleluia, amen! To all of those in the Music Ministry, remember that rehearsals are cancelled for November 8, and instead we will be going to Taizé worship at River s Edge. The carpool leaves St. Mary s parking lot at 6.30pm. See you then! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. St. Mary Catholic School News Corner Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul Mr. Andrew Carner, Principal The Power of the Pen teams have been selected! Mr. Jones will be busy working with the team members to prepare them for the competition that will take place in the spring. Power of the Pen is now in its 31st year. The program's aim is to positively impact academic achievement overall. POP does so by providing in-class instructional aids that serves more than 120,000 students in Ohio. Student Council organized a Halloween parade through the school for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 on Monday, October 31 st. Adults and students alike were all delighted to see the costumes and happy faces as the Junior High students handed out candy treats.
