2 Dear Friends, Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent We are often quite fascinated with the lives of great leaders, heroes, heroines and saints. We read biographies and autobiographies or watch movies that tell their stories. When we like them, we excuse their faults. When we don t we use their faults to erase their goodness. Like Isaiah, Paul and Matthew, we read their stories through the lens of the present. Matthew describes today the backstory to Jesus birth. Mary, engaged to but not yet living with Joseph, is found to be pregnant. Because Joseph loved her deeply he wanted to keep this quiet. She could be stoned according to the law, so he wanted to divorce her quietly. Then the angel appeared and made clear that the child s conception was of God. Because of his faith in God and in Mary, Joseph did as he was commanded. Isaiah spoke to a people on the verge of attack to engender trust that God was with them, no matter the outcome. We hear about a virgin who would conceive and bear a son named Emmanuel, God-with-us. See the connection with today s Gospel? The people believed! Paul wrote his letter to make clear that he was set apart by God, an apostle, chosen to witness the power of God made known in Jesus Christ the Lord. They knew his past as a persecutor, but, faith in Jesus changed his life. His seemingly impossible transformation meant that people would know that God-with-us through him. This last Sunday of Advent reminds us that we come from a long line of people whose faith and trust made clear that God is with us! We are to make Christ s presence known today. Tell the story of how you know God s presence because you follow Jesus. Make that a Sunday supper family prayer! Through you others will see Emmanuel, God-with-us! [Living the Word 2017] Thank you to SO MANY who made Christmas BRIGHT with your generous GIFT-GIVING of the Giving Trees! Thanks to Mrs. Dole and her helpers who packed and boxed and carried and delivered so MUCH for so MANY! May the Season of Giving become a Season of New Life! Thanks! Those people who come into our lives at times of confusion and help us find our way are truly angels to us, like Joseph, we need to listen to them, frequently those angels are in our own homes. Bible Study Samuel continues the story of the downfall of King Saul, but always we see the loving care of God come through to support His people. Come and see if you can find new ways in which we can bring the message to life in our own lives. No previous knowledge of scripture is necessary and everyone is welcome. Quiet Prayer Quiet Prayer will meet in the chapel on Tuesday at 12:30pm. Why not join us for a restful half hour of resting in the Lord. Prayer will be followed by a brief discussion of Richard Rohr s book Everything Belongs. Holiday Celebration Do plan on joining us for a presentation on Hildegard of Bingen on Dec 27th from 11am to 1pm in the Father John Garrity Meeting Room. Louisa Cruz, daughter of Mary will speak of her experience of visiting the monastery of Hildegard. We often speak of Renaissance men, men who seem to be talented in an amazing amount of areas. Hildegard could be called a Renaissance woman. We have only four women who have been declared doctors of the church. Here is your chance to learn about one of them. You are also invited to bring a dozen cookies to share with the group. We will provide beverages. The Christmas season lasts until the feast of the Epiphany. Don t stop celebrating too early. Prayer Shawl Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet Sunday afternoon from 3-4. Shawl will be available at this time if you would like to come and select one for someone in need of prayers or comfort. Theology on Tap - West 2017 Mass Intentions If you would like to schedule a Mass Intention for 2017 the Mass Book is Open for your intentions. Your request can be made by contacting the parish office (440) , at jabraham1@stmaryberea.org or by mail. The usual Mass stipend is $10.00 per Mass. We will do our best to accommodate your requests. Every Second Wednesday of the month, young adults in their 20 s and 30 s are invited to gather at Beachcliff Tavern ( Detroit Ave., Rocky River) at 7:00pm to hear an engaging speaker reflect on some aspect of the faith while enjoying a pint and some tasty food! Each night kicks off with a social, which includes complementary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by a speaker. Admission is only $5.00. Our next speaker on Wednesday December 21st, will be Fr. Michael McCandless, our diocesan vocation director, who will be offering his reflections in his talk entitled, Home for the Holidays: Bearing Christ in Your Nazareth. Theology on Tap is a great way for young adults to go deeper in their faith and connect with other young Catholics in the area. For more information, please contact Fr. Tim Roth (440) / frtim@samparish.org
