2 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 24, 2016 Dear Friends, We celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time and in the Gospel one of the disciples asks Jesus, Lord, teach us to pray. And at this request Jesus offers an instruction on prayer. He begins with the proper address to God Our Father and the acknowledgment of God s kingdom thy kingdom come. He goes on to name what one should ask of God- give us this day our daily bread (ideally sustenance and forgiveness). The forgiveness that we seek our trespasses must first be shown to those who are in debt to us as we forgive those who trespass against us. Then Jesus tells his disciples that prayer must be persistent and the petitioner confident that God will answer. Throughout Luke s Gospel, Jesus is seen at prayer at significant moments during his ministry hoping that his example will become our pattern as well. So let us pray this day in earnest for ourselves and our world. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION this year! Our Confirmation Team met this past week in preparation for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation this year. Parish Catechetical Leader Bob Sferra led our team meeting and the calendar of dates and topics was proposed. NO, we still have not received word from the Bishop s Office as to the DATE of Confirmation; however, the process BEGINS for ALL those in 8 th grade (or age equivalent) on September 7 th with the OPENING MEETING in Church at 7:00pm. All students and their parents are expected to attend. Mark your calendars NOW! NEW this year will be the time change of all Confirmation Formation Sessions to Sunday evening at 6pm. The SMS Library and Media Center is BEGINNING to take on a NEW LOOK! With the financial support of a number of donors, the current Library and Media Center will BEGIN to evolve from a book library to learning and developing minds hall with a multi-faceted educational look! Sounds vague, yes, but trust me when I say it will BE AMAZING! The first step in the creation of our 21 st century NEW LOOK is the addition of a few walls, doors and interior windows that will look into the minds and hearts of our students. We have eliminated many outdated books and materials with the forward thinking of introducing new methods and approaches to teaching minds and reaching hearts or as we say here at St. Mary s educating the mind and nurturing the soul. Join us in the efforts to raise the bar for our students! One loses touch with God when one takes hold of money. God preserve us. It is better to die. What would one do with surplus money? Bank it? We must never get into the habit of being preoccupied with the future. There is no reason to do so: God is there. Once the longing for money comes, the longing also comes for what money can give: superfluous things, nice rooms, luxuries at the table, more clothes, fans and so on. Our needs will increase, for one thing leads to another, and the result will be endless dissatisfaction. Just bring your Bible and a listening heart to see if God does not have something to say to you. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel on Tuesday at12:30pm. Our 20 minutes of Quiet Prayer will be followed by a CD from Thomas Keating. Why not make use of this opportunity to experience contemplative prayer in a group setting. All are welcome to join us. 5 Family Perspectives Jesus was praying. What a powerful example for us! He knew this was the way to stay connected to God the Father and handle all the demands being placed on Him. Jesus assures us if we put God first we will receive and find whatever we need from His infinite goodness and wisdom. But, we must make the time to stop, listen and seek God first in prayer. Pope Francis reminds us moments of family prayer and acts of devotion can be more powerful for evangelization than any catechism class or sermon. Make prayer a daily part of your family routine. Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes TRILINGUAL CELEBRATIONS By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy Two weeks ago was the yearly National Association of Pastoral Musicians convention. I was not able to attend, due to distance and heat (it was held in Houston, Texas! Too hot!!) but I followed along online as I was able. One of the major themes of this year s convention was the multicultural celebration of Catholicism in the United States. In example, the website page for the convention is written in Spanish, then Vietnamese, and then in English. Everything was translated for these three languages, and they used hymns and mass parts that were multi-lingual. Most of the panel sessions were about incorporating different cultures into church worship so that everyone is able to experience Christ. The mass was originally spoken in Latin and Greek, and now can be done in English, Spanish, and other languages to fulfill a Church s needs. I think that singing in different languages in church is a fine idea every once in a while. We ve done it before for the Trilingual Intercessions at Pentecost, just as the apostles spoke in tongues by the Holy Spirit. Some of my communion breakout hymns have Spanish lyrics (with Pan de Vida and Pescador de Hombres/ Lord, You Have Come) and in the future I would like to introduce these hymns for all to sing during Mass! Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. 6 Religious Education News The REO is Live again! Go to our new Parish website ( select Teaching from the top selection bar, then select Religious Education Office. From there you will see our REO Calendar, upcoming events, contracts & forms, information on our PSR program, information about our special needs (GIFTSS) program and, of course, sacramental preparation information. We have a new address for communication (reoinformation@stmaryberea.org). Please update your REO s, bookmarks, favorites, etc. so that you have the most current ways to communicate with us! PSR PSR Registration continues to be open! All the forms are on the website for you to download, print, fill-in and return to our office. Fees are the same as last year! The PSR year begins August 28 th at 11:30am with our Opening Mass and Welcome! Classes begin Monday August 29 th at 6:45pm. Sacramental Preparation The Confirmation Preparation Program is going to be different this year regarding Discipleship (Service Projects). We have decided that our Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their readiness to Serve Christ by serving our Parish. We have identified 6 Parish activities (3 social & 3 spiritual) that will occur during the year. Each Candidate will be asked to participate in at least 1 social & 1 spiritual activity during the year. For the list of activities, refer to the Confirmation Overview on the Parish Website ( religiouseducation/sacramentalprep/confirmation). Our 1 st Confirmation Service Activity is the Annual Parish Anniversary Weekend. We need help on both Saturday (chicken & ribs dinner) and on Sunday (picnic). If you are interested, sign up at any of the weekend Masses on July 30 & 31. Make sure you make down on the sheet that you are a Confirmation Candidate. Consult the Parish Website for further information. Confirmation Candidates Mark Your Calendars! Wednesday September 7 th. We will have our Orientation Meeting at 6:30pm in the School Gym. All the information about the Program will be made available at that meeting. Both Candidates & Parents (or Guardians) are expected to attend this very important meeting. First Sacraments Candidates Mark Your Calendars! Wednesday September 21 st. We will have our Program Orientation Meeting at 6:30pm in the School Gym. This is a Parent ONLY meeting. All First Sacrament Parents are expected to attend. Don Disantis* Wixy1260 Missionary Sunday July 30th & 31st Fr. Grzegorz Ruszaj, Redemptorist, will speak on behalf of the Redemptorists ministries in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan on July 30-31, 2016 at all Masses. Among many religious Congregations participating in the time of renewal for the Catholic Church in Russia, there are also Redemptorists, who have immediately started their apostolic activities in the territory of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan. At the moment, there are 26 Polish Redemptorists working there. They are planning to build a church and a parish pastoral center in Togliatti (Central Russia) - almost 1 million people live there, and there is still no Catholic Church in this city. The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer was founded in Scala near Naples, Italy in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Liguori. At present, there are 5300 Redemptorists, as we are commonly called, serving people across the world in 78 countries. The motto of our Congregation Copiosa Apud Eum Redemptio means: With Him there is Plentiful Redemption. Like St. Alphonsus, we follow Jesus the Redeemer in preaching this good news to the poor. A 2nd Collection will be taken to support their mission, please be as generous as you can.
