Craig Next weekend, Fr. Denis Kiyenje will speak at the Masses regarding his work in the Diocese of Butare in Rwanda. We will take a second collection to help him in his Missionary Work. Here is some information from the missionaries about their work. Rwanda is a small country situated in the heart of Africa that in 1994 experienced a horrific genocide that was politically motivated during which one million people were murdered in approximately 100 days. The genocide left behind many broken hearted like orphans, widows, traumatized..., and many destroyed infrastructures like schools, medical centers, even churches. Now there is peace and security in the country, but the challenge is to rebuild the nation and to help people to recover from genocide. Since the genocide, the Diocese of Butare has focused on Catholic education to the youth, teaching them unconditional love, peace and reconciliation so that the country may heal and build a better future. Through Catholic education the youth learn some life skills and form their conscience based on Christian values. This effort has contributed tremendously to the building of a new Rwanda we see today. The church in Rwanda is flourishing; today, 60% of the country s population is Catholic and vocations are booming. Through your financial support we can build more Catholic schools and carry on the mission of Christ of building the Kingdom of God as we hear in the Gospel of today. Jesus Compares the kingdom of God with a treasure and a fine pearl which are worthy investing everything one has. The treasure and pearl which the Rwandans are searching today are love, peace, reconciliation, healing, joy and education. Volunteers Needed We will be seeking Fall Festival volunteers to help with Set-up, Clean-up, Games, Inflatables, Raffle, Ticket Sales, Bake Sale, Food, etc. A large number of volunteers is needed to make our festival a success. Please signup on the Volunteer Sign-up Sheets available in the Social Hall in August. Silent Auction Donations We are looking for parishioners to donate an auction item or a theme basket. Ideas for donations or a basket can be sports memorabilia, movie night basket, date night basket, a day at the spa basket, etc. Items must be new. If you would like to donate but don't have the time or feel that you lack creativity to create a basket, we are offering an option to donate money towards the Silent Auction and we will create a basket for you! Please drop off donations to the office. If you are donating money, please make sure it is marked for Silent Auction! 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School St. Pius X / St. Leo School is accepting registrations for all grades prekindergarten (3 & 4 year olds) through grade 8 for the coming school year. Please call the school office at for a tour and information. *** The SPSL 6th, 7th and 8th grade Speech Club had a successful season this past school year. Congratulations to all the Speech Club members for their hard work and victories! The results of the speech competitions are as follows: At the Creighton Prep competition on April 7th Anthony Bope placed 4th in Impromptu and Anna Preston and Chloe Whiddon placed 4th in Duet. Marian High School hosted a speech meet on April 21st and the following students placed: Claire Wilson and Rachel Achola- 3rd in Duet, Joey Glantz - 4th in Impromptu and Anna Preston - 5th in Declamation. On April 28th at the Millard North speech meet the following students placed: Anna Preston - 1st in Declamation, Joey Glantz - 4th in Impromptu, Sydnee Baysa - 6th in Humorous Interpretation and Sydnee Baysa and Eleanor Mangan - 8th in Duet. The final speech meet for the season was held at Skutt Catholic High School on May 5th. SPSL ranked third overall at the Skutt tournament. Sydnee Baysa placed 1st in Humorous Interpretation; Anna Preston placed 2nd in Declamation; Sydnee Baysa and Eleanor Mangan placed 3rd in Duet; Kendra Fix placed 4th in Impromptu; and Joey Glantz placed 7th in Impromptu. Our appreciation to Miss Megan McAuliffe, the speech coach, the alums who helped as well as the parent and family volunteers who helped to make the season go well. *** The members of the SPSL Student Council were: 5th graders Bailey Benson, Charlie Mangan, Graclyn Temme and Reily Welsh; 6th graders Kate Hoppe, Lauren Larson, Chelsea Okosi and Caroline Sall; 7th graders Aiden Chattin, Jackson Dasher, Jacob Dasher and Brian Onyango; and 8th graders Paul Hayes, Eleanor Mangan, Ethan Owens and Cole Wilber. Some of the activities the Student Council led included: candy jar guessing game which supplied funds for the mystery boxes for fundraiser; food drive collection; EPS baby bottle drive, paper drive; door decorating contest during Catholic Schools week; two pep rallies and spirit week; and the bottled water drive. These students, along with their coordinator, Mrs. Chris Peters, were great leaders for our school. *** During this past school year, the Modern Woodmen Speech contest was held on April 5th. The topic this year was "What does it mean to be a hero?" Students in grades 5th through 7th wrote speeches, presented them in class and were given the option to compete in the contest. It was an optional assignment for the 8th graders. We had 65 5th through 8th grade students compete overall in the after school rounds. From those contestants, we had 10 students advance to the final school competition. These students competed in front of all of their classmates and judges from local businesses and Toastmasters Clubs. The top winners were: 1st - Dani Stolze, 2nd- Meg Raabe, 3rd - Audrey Ehlers. The top two finalists advanced to the District Contest that was held on May 4th at Christ the King School. Meg Raabe and Dani Stolze represented SPSL well! Dani Stolze took third place overall out of the ten competitors. She moved on to the state level competition where she one first place. Wow, Dani! This is outstanding. The national contest has all state winners present their speech by a professional video done in the presence of a judge for the Modern Woodmen Speech contest. Our appreciation to the teachers who helped the students prepare their speeches, and to the teachers who volunteered their time to judge at the after school contests, and, a special thanks to Miss Emily Klassen and Mrs. Monica Sheehan for coordinating the Woodmen speeches for our school. Reminder to St. Pius X / St. Leo School Parents: All school tuition payments are due to the school office by AUGUST 1, 2017 if you have not enrolled in the SMART Tuition Payment Plan. Laity in Liturgy 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Mary Magdalene has her feast day Saturday. This happens on a weekend where in Wisdom we explore the brilliance of God s clemency and might alongside a particularly fascinating parable where Christ instructs not to pull the weeds for fear of hurting the wheat. Who was St. Mary Magdalene first of all? Unlike the vast majority of canonized Saints we can refer directly to the Gospels for the answer. She was possessed of seven demons, sanctified and saved by Christ and then became one of his most ardent followers. She was present at the crucifixion, an initial witness to the resurrection and has become an icon for the role of women in the church. Any of her more scandalous reputations are the result of speculation and subjective interpretation at best. Despite the lack of a more contemporary scandal, her faith in Christ, Christ s power over the demons that plagued her and her transformation into a woman of palpable devotion place her in an inspirational position for the modern Catholic facing a banal culture and a highly urbane society. We are among the weeds, but in God s mercy he allows us to strive for Sainthood in the face of both supernatural and cosmopolitan struggles with sin. We can be the wheat that inspires and nourishes in the face of the modern world s terrors through Christ. St. Mary Magdalene is a powerful friend and intercessor on that quest. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Several years ago I decided I would plant some flowers at the rear of our backyard. I planted a variety of seeds including some wild flowers and a ground cover with pretty little white flowers. Well in a few weeks I had flowers everywhere, however as time went on the wild flowers and the groundcover overwhelmed the other beautiful flowers and it looked like a weed patch. The ground-cover even starting spreading to my grass. AHHH! Sometimes our lives in this modern society can seem like we are living in a weed patch. At every turn we face evil and corruption on all sides. Most of us probably say the Our Father at least once a week, as we ask Your Kingdom Come. Do we really desire that to happen? Jesus tells us in the scriptures today, that the kingdom is like a mustard seed that grows from a very small seed into the largest of bushes. Jesus describes the kingdom of God is like small amount of yeast in a loaf of bread which can make the whole loaf rise. The point Jesus is trying to make is that our faith may start small as a mustard seed or a small amount of yeast, but as we allow our Lord to guide our lives and live for His glory, our faith will continue to grow and grow until it fills our world with the Kingdom of God. That kingdom of joy, peace, and happiness will overwhelm the weed patches of our life. In our Gospel today Jesus describes the weeds growing with the good wheat and that they must co-exist until the harvest. We must live with evil around us, but our faith in Jesus Christ will keep us strong and not be overwhelmed by the evil that surrounds us.
