Craig Dear Parishioners, We will begin selling tickets for our Mardi Gras celebration which will be held on March 2 nd. We have a band, a catered meal, drinks and a wonderful fun night planned. We try to keep the ticket prices low just to cover our expenses. They will be $25 a person. A great time to get out of the house during these long winter nights. Please mark your calendars for the upcoming lent events. We have the Women's and Men's retreats and our parish mission. All dates are listed in the bulletin. Please register for the Archdiocese Unite event on June 8 th. You can go to the website or fill out a paper form in the commons and we will register you. You must register to get into the building. CARE is a program where you purchase gift cards to various stores and restaurants through St. Leo Church. We purchase the gift cards at a discount through a National SCRIP program and then sell the cards at face value to you and St. Leo Church keeps the profit. It s a win-win program. We sell the cards year round at the parish office. How can I purchase CARE? Care is available during office hours and in the office on Sunday mornings. (We are hoping to start selling after Saturday night Mass, too.) How do I pay for CARE? We accept cash and checks. Will St. Leo really make any money? YES! The more people that buy certificates, the more money we will make. We have a great variety of stores, restaurants, gas cards, etc, that there is a little bit of something for everyone. And! 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." We had a very exciting event for our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students the morning of February 12th at St. Pius X Church. We asked the students from those grades to gather together in the St. Pius X Church for the awarding of academic scholarships by five area Catholic high schools. Each high school had a representative(s) to present the scholarships to the SPSL recipients. The scholarships given out at this time were based solely on the results of the entrance exams taken at the school of choice a few weeks earlier. All of the parents of the students receiving scholarships were given calls from me prior to this day to come and see their child receive a scholarship. The academic scholarships awarded as follows: Creighton Prep: Caleb Hans, Trevor Gregg, Peter Sullivan, Patrick McMahon and Anderson Lopez Duchesne: Katie Coppard, Eleanor Horn and Abigail Mihulka Marian: Margaret Morris, Audrey Ehlers, Sophia Tripp and Kate Hoppe Mt. Michael: Will Brewster and Aiden Brink Roncalli: Molly McGill, Daniel Kampe and Caitlyn Pierce In all, 17 academic scholarships were awarded to our 8th graders, which is amazing. We are so proud of all of our students efforts and talents as well as all the dedication from their teachers here at St. Pius X / St. Leo School. What is very impressive is that with these 17 scholarships and with 67 students in our 8th grade class, we had over 25% of our soon-to-be graduated students receive an academic scholarship from a Catholic high school. St. Leo Parish Lenten Mission with Dominick Albano March 18 & 19, :30-2:30pm (Mini Mission) 7:00-8:30pm (Evening Session) Join us for a Lenten intergenerational opportunity including stories, prayer and fellowship Finding Happiness: How searching for happiness leads to God's plan for who you are and what you are meant to do with your life. Based on Dominick's upcoming book, The Fundamental Theory of Happiness, this mission will explore some fundamental truths about happiness - why we want it, what we're really looking for, what holds us back, and where true happiness is found. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman No one wants to be punished or condemned for how they are living their life. Everyone seeks adulation, blessings and love from those around them. It is human nature to want these things from others. As good Christians we seek God s blessings in our lives, but we often fall short of what God expects us to do. Our scriptures today give us some direction on how to seek God s blessing in our lives. God proclaims through the prophet Jeremiah that if a person has turned away from God, and is trusting world and others more than God, they will be cursed. But the Lord goes on to say, Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD. That is the key! We must learn to trust and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ more than anything else. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus is delivering the Sermon on the Plain, which is similar to Matthew s, Sermon on the Mount. Jesus blesses the poor, the hungry, the weeping, the persecuted, because in their humility they will experience fulfilment, joy, and happiness in God s presence. In contrast, Jesus also proclaims the great WOES to those who don t share their wealth and food, who are too proud and living without a care, because they have turned against the Lord and will be cursed. We all want to feel God s presence and love. The lesson we need to learn is that the closer we draw to our Lord, the more he blesses us. Those heavenly blessings fill our life with His unconditional love. Then we begin to love others more deeply and adulation, blessings and love are reciprocated back to us.
