Craig As we have entered the year 2018, we begin our celebration of 40 years as a parish. We were founded in We will be planning various activities throughout the year. One of them will be a new pictorial directory. We hope to schedule pictures during the summer. We are in a new church season. It is called Ordinary Time. The priest wears green. The color green symbolizes life and growth. Ordinary Time celebrates all aspects of our faith. It is a time to focus on the mission of the Church. We will be in Ordinary Time until the beginning of Lent. When the Easter season is over, we continue in Ordinary Time. It is the longest church season lasting 34 weeks. I would like to form a welcoming committee. This committee would welcome new parish families to St Leo s. Anyone interested, please call the office. We are still forming a committee to plan a Mardi Gras party on February 10 th. Please call the office if you can help. We are in need of a volunteer to coordinate our 4 monthly meals that we provide to the Siena Francis House Shelter. Duties include maintaining volunteer lists and occasionally checking in with the director at the shelter. Please call the parish office for more information. I want to thank you for your help in us getting closer to reaching our goal for the Archbishop s annual appeal. Our goal is 96,556 and we are currently at 95% of our goal. Most parishes in Omaha have reached their goal and I am confident that we will as well. All of your favorite flavors will be available and all proceeds go to the Tuition Assistance fund at St. Pius/St. Leo School. The 2018 goal is $12,000. We are very grateful for your generous support over the years. Boy Scout Sunday is February 4th All Boy Scouts are invited to attend the 10:00am Mass (in uniform) on Sunday, February 4th. 5 St. Leo Respect Life Tuesday, January 16th, the St. Leo Respect Life Ministry will meet in room W1 from 7:00-8:00pm. We ll talk about what s going on in the NE Legislature, upcoming pro-life events, and hosting the Living Rosary at St. Leo in March. All are welcome to attend. Saturday, January 27th, Nebraska Walk For Life in Lincoln, starting at St. Mary s Catholic Church, 14th & K Streets, with a 9:00am Pro-Life Mass, sponsored by the Bishops Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities. The Walk begins at 10:00am on the north side of the Capitol building and proceeds 7 blocks to the indoor venue at UNL Student Union, 14th & R Streets. Keynote speaker, Ann McElhenney, of the book and movie, Gosnell, will speak about the notorious abortionist of Philadelphia, PA, who is now serving a life sentence for manslaughter and infanticide. Transportation: Christ the King bus, $5/person. Call to reserve seats. This fills up quickly! Riders will leave at approx. 7:15am and return around 2pm. Otherwise, carpooling is recommended. Thursday, February 15, Catholics at the Capitol, 8:00am 3:00pm, approx. Includes mass, remarks from speakers on how to talk to your state senators, update on the issues and legislative activities, a visit to the Rotunda w/ break into groups to speak to respective state senators. Succeed. We are celebrating our two-parish school, St. Pius X / St. Leo School and around our school, we are continuing our them from our campaign, One Spirit. One Community. One Vision as well. We have a faith-community surrounding our highly respected school whose members treat each other with dignity, respect and care. We ask a lot of our students and expect the best. This Christmas in almost every imaginable way even more fantastic than last. I was so humbled by the swarms of volunteers, even despite some nights of bad weather. Every job that took 60 minutes last year took 30 this year. More beautifully, did you know our votive wall and its adjacent ministry initiatives generated almost $2000 which the parish used to help some less fortunate families in our neighborhood celebrate a warm and hearty Christmas? On top of that, the same wall has offset an incredible amount of my liturgy expense and made it possible for me to discuss some other growth and beautification opportunities for St. Leo s. Our love for this place is truly the gift that keeps on giving. I would like to thank all my music ministers for banding together to make each Christmas Mass beautiful. I also need to thank Annette Mundy, Vicki Jorgensen, Kathy Esch, Debbie Gilinsky and their families for making our Sanctuary so beautiful. Their taste, creativity and effort were astounding. The happiest of new years to a devoted and service oriented parish. Liturgy is the work of the people, and many hands have made that work a pleasure and a gift. 8 St. Leo Health Ministry Women & Alcohol. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that the health of 5.3 million women is negatively impacted by drinking alcohol beyond moderate levels. Even if a woman drinks less than a man, she is more likely to develop the following health risks: 1)Liver damage (inflammation) 2) Heart disease. 3) Brain damage. Alcohol can affect adolescent brain development so female teens may be impacted more than male teens. 4) Drinking around one drink per day can increase the chance of developing breast cancer compared to women who don t drink at all. Why does this happen? A man s body processes alcohol more efficiently than a woman. The blood alcohol level remains more concentrated in women due to their lower body water volume & a slower chemical breakdown of alcohol. They re more prone to develop alcohol health related problems & become intoxicated faster than men. Alcohol should be avoided if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, less than 21 years of age or take prescription &/or over-the-counter meds that aren t compatible with alcohol. It s important to seek help if you have an alcohol dependence problem that s negatively impacting your health, safety, job or relationships. Check with your primary care provider or other health care professional for medical care & additional support resources. Other treatment options may include: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), counseling, prescription meds & outpatient treatment. Al-Anon (for spouse &/or significant other) & Alateen (ages 13 to 18) are helpful support groups for those impacted by an alcoholic family member or significant other. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman In our lives we are all searching for a purpose and meaning. Often, people try to find that meaning to life in wealth, power or prestige, but that always fall short. When we try to find our purpose in this world without our Lord, our life is empty, filled with anger, frustration and depression. In our gospel today, two of the disciples of John the Baptist are searching for the meaning of life, and John tells them as Jesus approaches, Behold, the Lamb of God. In effect John is telling them and us, there is the true meaning of your life. Then these disciples follow Jesus, and He asks them and us, "What are you looking for?" They answer with a strange reply, where are you staying? We approach our God not knowing what or how to ask Him for something, but in our hearts we want to be with him and to get to know him. We want to ask Him to help us find meaning and purpose in our life s struggles. Jesus will always respond to us, Come, and you will see! Jesus calls us to let Him change our life forever and give us love and happiness. If we allow our Lord Jesus into our hearts and minds, He will transform our bodies into the temple of the Holy Spirit. He will fill our lives with meaning and purpose and give us hope even in our trials. To allow all this to happen we must do as Samuel did in our first reading, to learn to listen and respond; Here I am Lord your servant is listening, I have come to do your will. (Not true.) Mis-information, dis-information and plain old wishful thinking about divorce and Communion abound on the internet and in our families. What IS correctly recognized by most people, as evidenced by the Synod on the Family, is that divorce is a real pain point for Catholics. Our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors often feel alienated or estranged from the Church after divorce. We want the best for them but don t know how to lovingly invite them back when they don t feel at home in the Church. Learn how the Christian community can faithfully accompany those who have experienced the pain of divorce and estrangement from the Church. On Monday, January 29, Fr. Mike Eckley will offer a pastoral look at divorce. Using Amoris Laetitia, the document that grew out of the discussions at the Synod on the Family, Fr. Mike will talk about accompaniment or meeting people where they are and recognizing the sacredness of that place. Community News & Events ~Music in Catholic Schools will hold a dance and silent auction on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, from 7:30pm - 10:30pm at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Center. Music will be provided by the Nebraska Wind Symphony Swingtones. Free dance instruction will be given from 6:15pm -7:15pm. Tickets at the door are $15 each for adults; $10 for seniors and students.
