6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, I hope you are all doing well and enjoyed some of the better weather we have been having of late. I wanted to say that the warmer weather was officially here, but of course we had some colder weather earlier this week so we may have to wait for that official March 20th date for the start of Spring and the warm weather. We continue to have lots of success this school year and our student s talents have been on full display the past few weeks. The annual Catholic School s Bible Bowl was held this past Saturday at St. Thomas More. The Bible Bowl test student's knowledge of the Bible in a fun, interactive competition. St. Pius X/St. Leo School sent six representatives to the Bible Bowl. Our 4th Grade competitors were Cohen Senkbille and Emily Berthelsen. From the 5th grade Olive Peaslee and Xavier Sobetski. From the 6th grade Gabe O'Doherty and Simon Guitom. St. Pius X/St. Leo School had four competitors in the Top 10 of the individual competition. Those students were: Cohen Senkbille finished in 9th place, Simon Guitom finished in 7th place and Emily Berthelsen finished in 6th place. Gabe O'Doherty won the individual competition. For the team competition, St. Pius X/St. Leo School won the team competition, making it a clean sweep in the individual and team competitions. Great going Panthers!!! Additionally, we found out a few weeks ago that Caleb Hans, one of our 7th graders, won first place in the Letters About Literature writing contest. This contest is sponsored by the Library of Congress. As part of our 7th grade literature classes, all students are required to choose a book that has affected them in some way. The students then write a reflective letter to the author about how the book affected their lives. Next, those letters are sent to the national judging committee first. That committee sends the best ones back to the state committee to select the state winners. In the past, the state judges have been English professors at different Nebraska universities and high school English teachers from various schools. The winners and runners-up in each category (4-6, 7-8, 9-12) are then recognized by Governor Ricketts during a proclamation signing and then at a luncheon in Lincoln. Their letters are archived in the Nebraska authors room at the library in Lincoln. We are so proud of all of our students who wrote their letters for this competition and congratulations to Caleb Hans for winning first-place! Congratulations also to our 7th grade teachers, especially Mrs. Linda Rix as this is St. Pius X / St. Leo school s fourth first place winner in six years! Thank you for all your support and God bless you the rest of this Lenten season. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman It is our human nature to desire something new and exciting. Unfortunately we often find that some of those desires can lead us away from the light of God into darkness and sin. Once we allow ourselves to enter the realm of darkness, the rebellion against God increases. We may think we are living a normal happy life and God is the last thing we need, when in reality our rejection of our Lord has grave consequences. In our first reading from 2nd Chronicles we hear how all the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people added infidelity to infidelity, practicing all sorts of abominations. The Lord punished their sinfulness by the exiling them to Babylon. After seventy years of exile and repentance God allowed them to come back to Israel, but even after that, the people still did not heed God s word and they fell back into the darkness of sin. In today s Gospel we are given the solution to solve this enigma of the human soul falling into the darkness of sin. Jesus tells Nicodemus, For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Paul said in our second reading, by God s mercy and love we have been saved by grace through Jesus Christ. We have been given a choice; by faith in Jesus Christ we are saved from condemnation and our sins are forgiven; by rejecting Him we desire sin and darkness and are condemned. Let us choose to live in the light of Christ, who will fulfill all our desires. St. Leo Knights of Columbus Last Chance for Fun.
