Craig Dear Parishioners, Today is the beginning of Advent. Advent has a two-fold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ s first coming to us is remembered; as a season when that remembrance directs our mind and heart to await Christ s second coming at the end of time. Advent thus is a period of devout and joyful expectation. I hope we all can make this season special with prayer time and reflection. You probably noticed we have new missalettes and a new music book in Church. We used the Omaha Gives money to buy theses. This will allow all of you to have a missalette and the music book will help us increase our selection of music to have a better variety. Friday is a Holy Day of Obligation. It is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. We will have Mass Thursday night at 5:30 and Mass Friday at 6:40am, 8:00am, Noon & 5:30pm. The Immaculate Conception is our Patron Feast day of the United States. The Immaculate Conception is when Mary was preserved from original sin from the very first instant of her conception in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. This feast day is not found in Sacred Scripture. It has been passed onto us through Tradition. Our Catechism says the following, To become the mother of the Savior, Mary was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role. The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as full of grace. Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, full of grace through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. (#490). I hope you all are able to come to church to celebrate this great feast day. Next Sunday is Confirmation. Let us pray for all those preparing to receive this special sacrament. A reminder that our Advent Parish Penance services are December 11 at 7:00pm & December 12 at 1:30pm. Have a great week. Fr Craig Religious Retirement Collection Next Weekend Your donation works for aging religious. I read that roughly 95 percent of donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious aid senior religious, a donor writes. That s wonderful when we truly want our donations to work. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School With less than one month left to the 2017 year, the students, faculty and staff wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of our school. Without the tremendous help of all the parishioners in both parishes we would not be able to be an effective school for so many students. I can hardly believe that in my first year as principal, it is already December. It has definitely flown by but in an exciting fashion. I keep reflecting on how blessed I am to be a part of a school community like St. Pius X / St. Leo. I am sure that you all have heard a great deal about our One Spirit, One Vision, One Community campaign. We are so very blessed by all of your generosity to our community and we are closing down the home stretch of this vital campaign effort to continue our efforts to form students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." If you haven t made a commitment yet, this is the perfect weekend to do so as it is our Commitment Weekend. This weekend and into early this week, you will still have the opportunity to complete and submit your commitment card if you have not already. Your generosity and commitments continue to help us to live out our Catholic school mission through keeping our St. Pius X / St. Leo school abundant and proud tradition of making Catholic education accessible and welcoming to all families from all backgrounds. It is amazing that our school continues to be a beacon of what God s entire kingdom truly looks like here in Omaha, Nebraska. Part of what makes our school such a blessing for our families are our amazing teachers and your commitments make it easier for us to reward our teachers through the compensation they deserve. Lastly, your commitments will help us make our school building safe and keep up with our repairs while also allowing us to improve our technological footprint throughout the campus. What may be one of the most exciting plans after this campaign is to begin to improve our science, technology, religion, engineering, art and mathematics (S.T.R.E.A.M.) programs with renovated S.T.R.E.A.M. facilities. Thank you for all you do and I pray you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and also have an blessed Advent season. You can use your capital losses to offset capital gains, dollar for dollar. If you have more losses than gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 of your losses from this years income. If your losses are over $3,000, you can carry forward those losses into future tax years. Please contact Bob Nowaczyk, SPSL's Development Coordinator at for more information or talk with your broker or accountant. They will help you determine the best time to make a cash gift to help our School and/or Parish. Laity in Liturgy First Sunday in Advent Advent is not simply a preparation for Christmas. We are awaiting the second coming of our Messiah, Jesus Christ, by commemorating the first incarnation of Jesus 2000 years ago. Palestine in December 2000 years ago was rainy and cold, much as it is today. So, Shepherds likely would have actually been in barns or caves to stay dry. Shepherds enjoying a temperate night befit for seeing angles fill the sky; would have been a sight for July, August or September. The Census declared by Caesar Augustus was also more likely a pre, or post-harvest event, as an emperor would not want to starve the masses by cancelling agriculture for his population to travel for weeks. We may never know, nor does it matter what Christ s true physical birthday was. But we hang on to winter, cold, stars and snow in our observance of spiritual and corporal preparation for renewal. These devices are apparent metaphors high-lighting Christ s role in the circle of our spiritual lives. These symbols are also powerful tangible aspects of life in most of Europe where the early Church saw itself adopted by humanity most swiftly in the years of its genesis. What does the snow represent in your life? What cold, night time, longing and loss do you pray joyfully for Jesus to reconcile again when he comes anew to your heart this Christmas? Entrance Antiphon To you, I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in you be put to shame. (cf. Ps 25 (24) :1-3) Communion Antiphon The Lord will bestow his bounty, and our earth shall yield its increase. (Ps 85 (84) : 13) 06 l St. Leo Catholic Church

9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman If some catastrophe has happened in our life it may cause us to question if God is really watching over us. I m sure most of us have asked our Lord, why did you let this happen to me? Probably the better thing to ask of Him is, Lord, give me the grace that will help me understand what you are trying to teach me! Our human nature is to avoid our own faults, and look for someone to blame. Look at Adam, who knew the rules, and yet he blamed Eve for giving him the fruit from the forbidden tree. We can see the glory and majesty of our God if we truly open our eyes to see Him in nature or the universe. His love and compassion is always present to those who call upon his name, who wait patiently for him. But before we can do that we must first recognize our own sinfulness and our lack of paying attention to our Lord God. Isaiah, in our first reading, speaks to us about these things. How we harden our hearts so that we have no fear of our God. If we don t allow God to mold us into what he wants us to be, how can we possible complain when things go wrong. Paul, in our second reading give us a clue on how to allow God to mold us. The Corinthians gave themselves totally over to the Lord Jesus Christ and He gave them the grace and spiritual gifts to live as God called them to do. In our gospel Jesus is emphasizing how we must be ready and watch for the coming of the Lord. That means each day we must turn to Him in everything we do. Allow Jesus to mold us to be ready, to be watchful, and long to see His face. St. Leo Knights of Columbus Welcome to Derald Peters and family.
