6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School This is an article written by Mr. Terry Weare, the assistant principal for the past 13 years, to the parents of our school. It was thought best that the parishioners also know about this special accreditation. On April 25th, SPSL reached the mountain top of school accreditation when we received the news that we had been recommended for accreditation by AdvancED, a non-profit organization, that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. This organization serves 34,000 schools and school systems in more than 70 countries, positively impacting the school experience for 20 million students. The accreditation status ensures that SPSL will continue to pursue a school improvement plan that is reviewed every five years by AdvancED. Our external visit last April was the culmination of a long process, filled with fits and starts, that began shortly after achieving Rule 10 accreditation from the State of Nebraska in The next four years saw the SPSL faculty spending countless hours collecting documents, examining data and determining the school's performance in five different standards. These standards covered the school's vision and purpose, its governance and leadership, the teaching and learning that takes place, the monitoring and documentation of student performance and whether the school has the resources and support necessary to ensure achievement for all students. In addition, the teachers honed their instructional skills using an AdvancED tool that looks at the classroom learning experience in seven separate classroom environments. These environments include an equitable learning environment, an environment with high expectations, a supportive learning environment, an active learning environment, an environment that monitors student progress and provides feedback, a well-managed learning environment and the digital learning environment. The external visit confirmed what we have known for many years, St. Pius X / St. Leo School is an exceptional learning institution. Notable among the findings was the fact that the faculty scored significantly above network averages in all seven classroom environments; this is a quantitative validation of the qualitative impression that SPSL features an excellent faculty that facilitates a superior classroom learning experience for all learners. The faculty is to be commended on their willingness to shoulder the added responsibility of pursuing this accreditation initiative along with the responsibilities of providing our students with an excellent education. A special recognition goes out to Emily Klassen, our 4th grade teacher, who undertook the massive task of compiling an electronic portfolio for the storage of our important school artifacts and to Joyce Gubbels for her determined support of school improvement. SPSL, through the efforts of hundreds of people who kept climbing despite the obstacles and setbacks, has reached the mountain top of accreditation and should now be able to clearly see a future path that will keep SPSL at the summit of the Catholic school experience. As the retiring principal of SPSL, I want you to know that none of this entire process would have happened without the extreme guidance, countless hours of extra work, and the professional development for teachers and staff that was needed to understand this process, all done by Mr. Terry Weare, the assistant principal for the past thirteen years and previously 5th grade teacher for 12 years. Terry Weare is leaving us after 25 years. This was a dream that Terry Weare had for our school and it was accomplished thanks to him following his dream. -Joyce Gubbels Laity in Liturgy July 30, 2017 This weekend s entrance antiphon reminds me of a beautiful experience I had while singing in some of Europe s great Catholic spaces this summer. The honor choir Dr. Eklund from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln assembled, was composed of students aged from all sorts of musical and faith backgrounds. However, Dr. Eklund, being a student of classical music and a cradle Lutheran has a deep appreciation for the roots classical music has in the Catholic Church. It has always been important to Dr. Eklund singing in these spaces to try and make the ecumenical and reverent gesture that every time the huge interfaith, interdisciplinary choir sings a Mass, Catholics within the choir should receive communion. So while singing in many of the spaces where great choral music was explored and founded as an art form for the first time, like Notre Dame in Paris and San Marco in Venice, about a dozen choristers stepped out of the performance to worship and receive. The sextons, priests an parishioners at these year old churches were always overjoyed to see that across oceans, between faiths and beyond language barriers Catholics are always among friends. Drew Neneman Entrance Antiphon God in his Holy Place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people. Cf. Psalm 68: 6-7 (36) Communion Antiphon Bless the Lord O my Soul, and never forget his benefits. Cf. Psalm 103:2 06 l St. Leo Catholic Church

A few weeks back you received a mailing in your home that outlined the reasons for this campaign and the strong support for it from parishioners who participated in the planning study. The Steier Group has been hired to manage the campaign for us and we have been working with them the past several weeks preparing for its launch. We are pleased to announce that the theme for the campaign is One Spirit, One Vision, One Community. This theme captures the spirit of the two parishes involved and our joint support for St. Pius X / St. Leo School. Over the next few weeks you will be getting more information about the campaign and its importance to the future of our parishes and school. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Our scriptures today teach us two very valuable lessons to which we all need to pay attention. Our first reading is a teaching about Solomon praying to God for WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING. This is certainly something we all need to pray for in our lives. When I read this, I thought about the beginning of the Serenity prayer written by Reinhold Niebuhr back in the 1930 s. It starts like this, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. In our gospel today, Jesus again is speaking of the Kingdom of God which he describes in two ways. In his first parable Jesus explains to us that we must commit to the pursuit of His Kingdom with everything we have, just as the merchant sold everything to obtain that one pearl. In His second parable, Jesus tells us that when judgement day comes everyone will be gathered together and judged. Those who were good will be saved and those who chose otherwise will be thrown into the fiery furnace. The point the Church is trying to make in the selection of these two scriptures is that we must first ask God to awaken the gifts of Holy Spirit within us, so that we can know and accept God s will in our life and then put it into practice. Giving us the wisdom to know what is the most important thing in our life which is our eternal salvation. Saint Paul said in our second reading, We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. We are called for His purpose to use His gifts so that we can recognize what we cannot change, what we can change and the Wisdom to know the difference between God s will and our own.
