Craig Dear Parishioners, This week we celebrate the Holy Day of Ascension Thursday. We will have Mass Wednesday evening at 5:30pm and Thursday at 6:40am, 8:00am, Noon and 5:30pm. The Ascent to heaven was the last stage of his mission on earth. It marks the definitive entrance of Jesus humanity into God s heavenly domain. (Catechism #665). Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania and some New England States keep this holy day on Thursday. All others have moved it to Sunday. It is up to the Bishops of a given region to decide when this feast day is celebrated. All three dioceses of Nebraska want it to stay on Thursday. So if you travel, you may want to be aware of this. Next Saturday is the Mother s Day brunch. Tickets are $10 and this Monday is the last day to purchase tickets. I invite all Mothers to come and enjoy a great breakfast and to celebrate Motherhood. It would be great if we fill the fireplace room with well over 150 mothers. If any men would like to help serve, please call the office. Next weekend is the Catholic Communications Campaign second collection. This money helps promote the Catholic faith by radio, TV, and print. Half the money raised here in the Archdiocese will stay here. Next weekend we will have roses for sale for our mothers. Money raised will go to Essential Pregnancy Services. Please continue to pray for our sister parish in Ndongosi, Tanzania. We are currently working with an organization to help bring clean water to the village where are sister parish is located. 4 Connections High School Ministry Make a Connection! Connections is a weekly gathering for all High School Students. It is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn about our faith, discuss relevant issues, and have fun, too! All are welcome! 5 St. Leo s 3rd Annual Mother s Day Women s Brunch Saturday, May 12th 9:30-11:30am St. Leo Great Room For all women of the parish and guests. Tickets: $10 each. Catered breakfast courtesy of Wheatfield s. Our speaker will be Carmella Briganti, who is a retired Union Pacific employee and faithful Catholic who was selected to carry the Olympic torch through downtown Omaha en route to the 2002 winter games in Salt Lake City. As part of the honor, she had to write an essay about someone who inspired her, and she chose her mom, who raised five kids after her husband died suddenly. Briganti has great stories about her mom (who didn t work or drive when she was widowed) and about her torch-bearing experience. You ll be inspired, too! Stop by the office to purchase tickets. Deadline for reservations is May 7th. Due to seating availability and meal planning for the event, we regret that no tickets can be sold after May 7th. Young At The St. Pius X Pioneers and the St. Leos Keenagers have come together and formed a new group, Young at Heart. If you are over 55 and would like to meet new people and enjoy more fun activities, we would love to have you join in. Mary Our Queen is sponsoring a bus trip around Omaha again this year. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, It has been a wonderful school year and I can hardly believe that it is already May. The year has flown by so fast! I wanted to thank all who attended and supported our Third Annual SPSL School Recognition Dinner that was held this past Tuesday, April 24th. The SPSL Recognition Dinner is our dinner where our awards are presented to recognize many of our outstanding school community members. This year we honored the following amazing, St. Pius X / St. Leo school community members: The NCEA / SPSL School Distinguished Graduate Award Dr. Johnell Ohlinger Brooks (1987) The Reverend George Kempker Volunteer of the Year Award Susan Drew The Sister Brigetta Burns "Teacher of the Year Award Pam Botos The Sister Viola Miksch Servants of Mary Service Award Dave Ludwig SPSL School Hall of Fame inductee Fred Dohmen St. Pius X/St. Leo School If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3-year-old and 4-yearold programs) to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for the next school year, please call our school office at to set up a time to come and visit, and, then register your child/ren when you decide to come to our school. We are blessed that our grades are filling up fast but we would love for you and your family to join our school family next year. It was a beautiful night and I wanted to also thank and recognize our school s development coordinator, Bob Nowaczyk for all his amazing work on this event. I head so many kind words and compliments on the organization of the night and that is in large part to Mr. Nowaczyk s dedication to this special night. I also am so grateful to our Co-Chairs Sue Coder and Mary Grenier for their dedication to our school and helping Mr. Nowaczyk with our annual celebration. Thank you to all who made it a special night. Additionally, as the school year winds down, I wanted to remind our 8th grade parents and students that 8th grade graduation is approaching. May 14th will be our practice for graduation mass at St. Pius X church starting at 11:50am and practice for the graduation prayer service on May 15th at St. Leo the Great church starting at 9:00 am. There is a mass that day at 8:00 am so we are asking parents and families to not show up that day before 8:30 am. On May 17th, we will have our graduation mass at St. Pius X starting at 8:30 am and our graduation service on May 17th at St. Leo starting at 7:00 pm. 8 Laity in Liturgy~ May 6 Parables operate under the power of Mystery. It isn t explained to us precisely how the talents were multiplied. It isn t prescribed how the mustard seed functions in the cycle of life as one of the largest shrubs. No one ever delves into the deeper nuance of the relationship between the prodigal son and his brother. Parables leave room for a human factor. The miracle of Salvation has already occurred and the Paschal Mystery lives on eternally in creation. But like the parables, outside of Christ s calls, illustrations and miracles He leaves room for us to act, live and spread the message of his redemption. Our society abhors mystery. We have been pressured by our culture not to embrace mysteries as puzzles to be pondered if never solved. Rather than seek improvement and grace, we seek solutions and conclusions. Perhaps it s time to lose ourselves to questions and tasks with joy, rather than seek to be defined, categorized or fulfilled as the world offers we ought. How much strife seems to be wrought by this quest for the answer, the secret or the solution? Feel free to start small. In 3 weeks we will be beseeching you to minister in and around the Mass in a new and different way. Can you give 5 days a year? 5 times a year? 5 minutes a month? What is your 5? There is no minimum gift, but we would be thrilled to have you immerse yourself in the work of our family s altar. I cannot promise it will fulfill you or thrill you. Although honestly it might. But I can promise it will encourage you to ask, embrace and engage differently. Feel Invited to cut out and distribute this column to your friends in the parish whom you think might love to join us in the works and offerings of our sanctuary. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman All You Need is Love was the song the Beatles sang in the sixties; but what is love? By the standards of today s society it is mutual sexual attraction that culminates in whatever feels good, that s love. So by that definition if we don t feel good then we are not in love. That view point of the world is totally wrong. In our scripture, Saint John, gives us a good example of what love is and where it comes from. He writes, Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. When we truly love someone, we are allowing God s greatest gift to help us become what He called us to be. It is His Holy Spirit working in our lives allowing us to love one another as He loves us. God gave us an example of what true love was all about when He allowed Jesus to suffer and die for us. Our Lord Jesus tells us in the Gospel. Love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. For certain, giving one s life for another does not feel good and involves the sacrificing of ourselves. The giving of one s self is called unconditional love. Every human being desires love and intimacy. To really achieve that we must learn to give ourselves unconditionally to one another, just as our Lord Jesus did for us. When we do this we begin to experience the love of God in our lives and realize that all you really need is to remain in the Love of Jesus Christ.
