Craig This weekend is the feast of Pentecost. The word Pentecost means 50. It is 50 days after Easter. The Holy Spirit was sent to the apostles after Jesus Ascended into Heaven. The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity, true God with the Father and the Son. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit many times during his visible stay on earth-but especially at the Last Supper and just before his Ascension. The role of the Holy Spirit is to sanctity us as by his presence in our soul. It is the life of God inside us. The Holy Spirit is the source of life for the Church. We should practice devotion to the Holy Spirit by our conscious awareness of his presence in our souls through sanctifying grace. Let us pray to the Spirit regularly and especially pray for the gifts of the Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. The fruits of the spirit are: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, selfcontrol and chastity. Today is also the feast day for our Catholic Radio station KVSS. Let us pray for them. I am looking for two more people who would be interested in serving on the parish council. Any parent of the school who wants to serve on the school board, please call me at the office. Wednesday is Omaha Gives. Thanks for helping out our parish. They do drawings on the hour. James Martin, SJ, recalls a time when laughing and joking among the religious was frowned upon, and gives an example of how, years ago, one Jesuit superior, known for his seriousness, claimed that All levity is excessive! Fr. Martin offers an updated, more sensible view for those intent on spiritual practice, whether religious or laypeople: religious life, and life in general, shouldn t always be taken too seriously. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, states that Humor and laughter have an important place in the life that God desires for us all, and Fr. Martin s book helps explain why. Filled with his ever-present warmth and wisdom on the blessings of having a sense of humor, plus funny stories from the lives of the saints such as St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis of Assisi, St. John XXIII, Mother Teresa and many others, Fr. Martin s book is a joy to read. Faith Discoveries Book Group Anne Lamott provides inspirational writing with a little tossed humor in Hallelujah Anyway. She says, "God doesn t give us answers. God gives us grace and mercy. Join the discussion of Ms. Lamott s wisdom on Saturday, June 2, 9-10:30am. Questions: call Sarita at or Linda at l St. Leo Catholic Church

6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, I hope you all have had a blessed week. Whether this was a school year that went slowly or quickly for you, the school year is ending this Wednesday, May 23rd, for all students. I can definitely tell you, without any doubt, that this first year for myself went by very, very fast. That being said, I enjoyed the year greatly and have appreciated all of your support. This past week, we started a new tradition for our graduating 8th graders. This past Monday, our entire school participated in a blessing walk for our outgoing 8th graders. All of our students, in every grade, as well as faculty and staff from our school and parishes, cheered and blessed our 8th graders as they walked through the school and made their way to the parish center. It was a very neat experience and something I am excited for our current 7th graders to experience next year. We will have a special closing Mass for all students that are still in school, the first through seventh grades. This is always a very important time for our school community to pray together for those who will not be returning to our school next year, some being students, and others being faculty and staff. We also will pray during this liturgy that we all have a safe, fun-filled and restful summer. We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the faculty and staff, pastors and associate pastors, parents, students and parishioners for their hard work, help and support during the school year. We trust that it was a year of growth for all of us not only academically, but, also in our Catholic faith and our desire to be of service to others. We hope that all of you will enjoy the summer months. Have a fun and safe summer! We want to express our sincere appreciation to several people who have been key members of our SPSL School Community for many years and are leaving us at the end of this school year: * Miss Pam Botos is retiring from St. Pius X / St. Leo school after being a teacher at our school for 41 years in grades Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st and 3rd. *Mr. Dave Ludwig is retiring from our school community after serving us as maintenance director and helping in the business office with purchasing for 34 years. *Mr. Mychal Lanik is leaving our school as he embarks on a new journey teaching in Lincoln. He has taught PE at our school since 2011 and has also served as the parishes athletic director as well. *Mr. Bob Nowacyzk is retiring from his position as development coordinator this year. He has served as a teacher and development coordinator from and focused fully on his development coordinator position from 2012 until this year. *Mrs. Margie Dunlap is leaving our school as she and her husband move to Kansas City. Mrs. Dunlap has served as a 4th grade teacher assistant since *Mrs. Teri Goertzen is leaving St. Pius X / St. Leo as she pursues a new professional endeavor. She has served as a teacher assistant in 1st grade for the past 2 years. *Mrs. Kate Macias is taking some time off from SPSL as she recently had a child. She will not be returning next year as she stays home and helps the family. Mrs. Macias has taught at our school as our Pre-K enrichment director and in Spanish since for the past 2 years. If you or your child(ren) had one of these teachers and staff members, it would mean a lot to them if you sent a card of thanks to them. The cards could be dropped off at our school office, in either rectory, or mailed to SPSL at 6905 Blondo St., Omaha, NE and we will make sure that they receive the mail you send to them. Special Note: The school office will be closed at different times during the summer. When our office is open, our office hours during the day will be 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. with time off for lunch. It s always wise, during the summer to call ahead to make sure we are in the office at the particular time you d like to come. Our school office number is If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3-year-old and 4-year-old programs) to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for the next school year, please call our school office at to set up a time to come and visit, and, then enroll your child/ren when you decide to come to our school. We are blessed that our grades are filling up fast but we would love for you and your family to join our school family next year. 06 l St. Leo Catholic Church

9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Have you ever been in a group of people who are speaking in a language you cannot understand? As an example, it would be very difficult for many Catholics to understand the extraordinary form of the Mass, which is in Latin. However, if we are open to God s Holy Spirit, our hearts and minds will be open to what God is speaking to us in any language. God s Holy Spirit opened the hearts and minds of those gathered on the first Pentecost, as they heard Peter and the other Apostles speak to them about our Lord Jesus Christ. Before that day the followers of Jesus hid in fear for their lives. Then the Father sent His gift of the Holy Spirit so that everyone could understand his message. This is the same Holy Spirit that all believers receive when we are baptized. It is the same gift of the Spirit that hopefully, ignites our hearts when we are confirmed into the Church. If we are open to this Spirit of God we will understand His message and will also proclaim to everyone we meet, Jesus Christ is our Savior, our Lord, and our only hope. In many of scriptures we read why we need this Holy Spirit. It guides us to all truth and helps us to live our lives in holiness. God s Holy Spirit gives each of us different spiritual gifts to build the body of Christ and we are given these spiritual gifts so we can live in love, peace, and happiness. If Christians would allow God s Spirit to guild their lives, we would understand, love and care for each other and that Spirit would renew the face of the earth. St. Leo Knights of Columbus Thanks to all knights who helped serve the Mother s Day Brunch and to those who are helping with the spring clean up and care of the St. Leo Church grounds and gardens.
