Craig Dear Parishioners, We are looking to form a committee to plan a Mardi Gras party on February 10 th, 2018, here at St. Leo. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please call the office. We would like to start praying the rosary before all weekend Masses. If you would like to lead the rosary at a particular Mass, please call the office. This week we will have Mass on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00am. The collection will be for Human Needs Committee for the poor. There will be no daily Mass on Friday due to Fr. Dillon and I travelling to see family. Wednesday is the feast day of St. Cecilia. She is the patron saint of our cathedral. She was married against her will to a pagan noble. He later became a Christian and he and Cecilia s brother were caught burying the bodies of martyrs. Cecilia also was arrested. She was to be smothered to death but miraculously this didn t happen. So they tried to behead her. The attempted execution went bad and she lived for 3 days in that condition. She is the patron saint of musicians. Let us pray for our Mother Church in Omaha. Please pick up a pledge card in the commons if you would like to make a pledge to our capital campaign. We hope to finish the campaign in a few weeks. Have a great week. Anointing at St. Leo December 3 On Sunday, December 3 following the 12:00pm Mass, we will have the celebration of the Anointing of the Sick for all who are suffering from infirmities of mind, body or spirit or addictions. To donate, visit St. Leo 2017 Christmas Project This year we are participating in Project Angel Tree, where gifts will be provided by St. Leo parishioners for children of incarcerated parents. The project is promoted by Angel Tree: A Program of Prison Fellowship. Angel cards with the recipient s name, age and gift suggestion ($20 value) requested by the incarcerated parent will be available at Masses on Nov The gifts and Angel cards are to be returned on Dec. 1-2 or Dec Or, you can donate money to defray the cost of the party when the children receive their gift on Dec. 16 at St. Leo Church. You can volunteer NOW as an angel elf to help with the following: -volunteers to help distribute angel gift cards at Saturday, Nov. 26 or Sunday, Nov. 27 Masses -volunteers to help with the Dec. 16, 2-3:30pm party -volunteers to drive guests from their homes to St. Leo for the Dec. 16 party and/or return them home -volunteers to deliver gifts to children who are unable to attend the party. Thank you for your generosity in this week s second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in six people lives in poverty. 4 Connections High School Ministry Make a Connection! Connections is a weekly gathering for all High School Students. It is an opportunity to meet new people, learn about our faith, discuss relevant issues, and have fun, too! All are welcome! The Remembrance Tree Beginning Dec. 2-3 and continuing throughout the Advent and the Christmas Season, there will be a Remembrance Tree in the back of the Church. The St. Leo Bereavement Committee invites you to bring an ornament to place on the tree in honor of a loved one who has died. You may pick up the ornament in January. Votive Wall Illumination Opportunity If you would like to illuminate the entire Votive Wall for a Sunday or Feast day in memory of a loved one or devotion to a special intention the cost is $50. The wall will be illuminated for the entirety of the Sunday or Feast Observance of your request and we will happily display a picture of your loved one with a brief biography on the Gathering Table in the commons. Proceeds will help the parish support any parish family members in need, especially around the holidays. Faith Discoveries News Book/author and topic discussion will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9-10:30am in classroom W1. The book is A Warrior of the People by Joe Starita. Joe has again written about a famous Native American: Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Native American physician. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." *** SPSL sixth graders were among 1,000 young people participating in the urban Omaha Archdiocesan Vocation Awareness Day on Friday, October 20th. Sponsored by the Omaha Archdiocesan Association of Consecrated Life Persons (OAACL), in conjunction with the Archdiocesan Vocations Office, the event was held at Skutt Catholic High School. Students participated in activities and small group presentations highlighting the variety of ways in which people live a Consecrated Life today. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to meet and visit with Sisters, Brothers, Priests and Consecrated Life Persons from several Religious Congregations, and with Archdiocesan Priests and seminarians. Celebration of Mass with Archbishop George J. Lucas was a highlight for many participants and a true experience of prayer that all would know and follow God's plan daily and in their life style choices. You may have seen that we even had two of our students, Damien Peteler & Logan Chambers photographed with Archbishop Lucas for the Catholic Voice. The buses to and from Skutt Catholic High School were paid for by the Knights of Columbus Councils from St. Pius X and St. Leo Parishes. Thank you! *** Congratulations to the following students who were recently accepted into the UNO Middle School Honor Choir: Wosuk Ando, Mauelli Bakou and Ben Howard all were selected as 7 th graders and Julia Nubel, Meg Raabe, Megan Rozmajzl, Dani Stolze, Max Mangan, Simon Metcalf and Andrew Washington were selected as 8 th graders. This is the first time ever that we have had 10 students accepted at St. Pius X / St. Leo school and we are so proud and excited for them. The students will be attending an all-day choral session with a guest conductor on Friday, January 19th and will give a concert at the end of the day at St. Andrews United Methodist church at 3:00 p.m. Congratulations to our very talented choir singers! Laity In Liturgy November 19 th Tradition is a tremendous conduit for the Holy Spirit in the Catholic Faith. Tuesday November 21 st is the Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, you won t find the feast in the scripture. Nor in the scripture will you find the names of Mary s parents, Sts. Joachim and Anne. There is an apocryphal infancy Narrative of James from which we glean our traditional devotion to the family of our Holy Family s matriarch. Since this piece of pseudoliterature isn t adopted into our Catholic Canon, it constitutes a legend, which subjects have been legendarily canonized by our faith with the communion of Saints. Sts. Joachim and Anne, in thanksgiving for a child despite having previously believed Anne was barren, consecrated Mary to the Temple at the age of three. According to the legend, which has no historical foundation, Mary lived at the temple until the Age of 12 more than 4 years after her parents had passed away. This parallels the life of the mother of the Prophet Samuel, Hannah, who was also consecrated to God. The spirit of the story and its corresponding feast are dear to the Church, despite any lack of corroboration, because they indicate that Our Mother Mary was always destined and dedicated to God s plan for the universe s salvation. 8 Christmas Concert December 18th at 7:00pm Join the St. Leo Choir and Bell Choir for their annual Christmas Concert. The concert will be followed by a Christmas cookie & cocoa social. Free will donations are welcome and will go to our music ministry program at St. Leo. Plan to join us! St. Leo Capital Campaign Update We are very pleased to report that the pledge total for our One Spirit, One Vision, One Community capital campaign is now more than $2.3 million. We are moving closer and closer to our goal. So how do we finish what we have started and get to our goal? The simple answer is to have every parish family participate in this campaign. Your gift or pledge in any amount will help us reach our goal. More importantly, your gift will help us ensure the viability of our school and parish for many years to come. As St. Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians: For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has not according to what one does not have. - 2 Corinthians 8:12 The campaign is winding down and it is important that you get your pledge in soon. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. 27th Annual National Night of Prayer for Life Friday, Dec. 8th 8:00pm-Midnight Friday, December 8th, is the 27th Annual National Night of Prayer for Life. It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego. The National Night of Prayer for Life honors Our Blessed Mother and prays through Her intercession for the establishment of a Culture of Life, protection for the Church from persecution, and asks our Lord to REVIVE OUR LAND. St. Leo will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Adoration from 8:00pm to Midnight, Friday the 8th in the main church. Host couples will be present for each hour of the vigil. Please consider coming for an hour or 30 minutes. You may want to come especially during the HOUR OF UNITY, from 11:00pm - 12 Midnight, when we will be united in prayer with churches across our country s 4 time zones for the protection of life from conception to natural death. The National Night of Prayer for Life is a wonderful way to help you and your family keep the proper perspective this holiday season and make your Advent special. A mystery of the Rosary will be prayed each hour and other suggested prayers and reading will be available for silent prayer as well. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman What is your greatest treasure? As we go through life hopefully our priorities and our treasures change to more important things than money, prestige, or power. As Christians our treasure should be our relationship with Jesus and our family. God entrusts us with many gifts and treasures to help us grow and become greater than when we first received them. God expects us to use them to become better Christians and better human beings. If we fail to be aware of His gifts or fail to use them, then we are like the servant in our Gospel who buries his master s treasure. Our Lord will punish us in the same way if we don t utilize the gifts and talents He entrusts us with. Sometimes we get so wound up with our careers, our daily struggles, our pursuit of more things, we fail to see the treasures in front of our face. When we do this, we are living in darkness and sin. We are failing to see the light and love of our Lord Jesus. When we don t allow our Lord into our life, even small disasters bring unbearable pain. Our love for those around us, our wife, our husband, our children, and all the special people in our lives are the true treasures. As Paul said in our second reading today, For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. He concludes by saying, We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. To do this we must cherish and nurture the treasures our Lord has given us. Then he will say to us, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Come, share your master's joy.
