6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, We are very pleased to announce that we had some of our students audition for the Music in Catholic Schools Honor Band. Out of the many students throughout Omaha who auditioned for this select band, it is our pleasure to inform you that we have six students from your school who were selected to be in the Honor Band for 2018/2019 school year. This was the second most of any Catholic school in Omaha! Congratulations to Heidi Hans (6 th grade; Flute), Patrick McMahon (8 th grade; Alto Saxophone), Tanner ten Bensel (6 th grade; Horn in F), Caleb Hans (8 th grade; Trombones), Alex ten Bensel (7 th grade; Tuba) and Sam Newell (7 th grade; Baritone Horn). Our school has historically had many students selected for Honor Band among the Catholic schools in Omaha and we are very proud of all of them and the tradition of celebrating music and the arts at our school. I am continually amazed by our students and their gifts, especially our students musical talents. The Music in Catholic Schools Honor Band will have several performances and visits to schools this year, including a trip to St. Pius X / St. Leo. We will send out the information on those performance dates as we hear more later in the school year. We are also very excited for our annual 5th and 6th Grade Musical! This year, our musical is Madagascar Jr. and it will be held on Thursday, November 15th at 7:00 pm in the school gym. Will we will provide more information as we get closer to that performance date. I highly recommend attending, even if you do not have a student performing in the show. Our musicals, especially our 5th/6th grade musical, is one of my most favorite things about our awesome school because of all of the hard work and preparation by our students and staff. Additionally, I cannot overstate how unbelievably talented our music teachers Mrs. Karen English and Mrs. Carol Drvol are and how much they mean to our school. We are so blessed to have them at our school and it is a lot of work and dedication to put on this 5th/6th grade musical. If you have seen one of the musicals, you will know exactly what I mean. If you don t know what I mean, please show up and watch a musical that you will think should be performing at the Rose Theatre and that is not hyperbole. I want to thank Mrs. English and Mrs. Drvol for sharing their gifts with our school and working so hard to help our students share their gifts with our community. Thank you also to all of our parents who have dropped off and picked up our students as we prepare for this wonderful event. Cory Sepich, Principal If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3-year-old and 4-year-old programs) to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for this school year, please call our school office at to set up a time to come and visit, and, then enroll your child/ ren when you decide to come to our school. We are blessed that our grades are filling up, but would love for you and your family to join our school family this year! 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman We have all heard many people complain that they just don t get anything out of Mass. We ve also heard people say that they like to go to a church because they hear the Word of God and have great music. Today s philosophy is that everyone asks, What s in it for ME! The prophecy in our first reading from Isaiah reminds us what our savior has done for us. It says, Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear. That s our sin and that s our guilt. Our gospel today finds James and John asking to be important people when Jesus comes into his Kingdom. In affect James and John are asking the question, What s in it for me? However, Jesus teaches all his disciples that they must be the servant to all. Jesus said, Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. We come to Mass, not to be entertained and to be served but to praise our Lord Jesus Christ and give Him the glory for our lives. If we really want to have a great experience when we come to Mass, we need to be engaged with what is happening. The Catholic Church has three readings and a psalm from the bible every Sunday. The priest consecrates bread and wine to become the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are receiving our Lord Jesus Christ in communion. What s in it for you? You join a community, you hear the word of God, you praise God, and you receive Him into your soul. And if you re really good, you receive EVER LASTING LIFE. St. Leo Knights of Columbus Our Council is sponsoring Donut Sunday on October 28 (8 and 10am masses), contact Fred Otterberg at fotterbe@cox.net if you can help.
