Laity in Liturgy March 12, 2017 All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king. -JRR Tolkien Arise my body, my small body, we have striven Enough, and He is merciful; we are forgiven. Arise small body, puppet-like and pale, and go, White as the bed-clothes into bed, and cold as snow, Undress with small, cold fingers and put out the light, And be alone, hush'd mortal, in the sacred night, -A meadow whipt flat with the rain, a cup Emptied and clean, a garment washed and folded up, Faded in colour, thinned almost to raggedness By dirt and by the washing of that dirtiness. Be not too quickly warm again. Lie cold; consent To weariness' and pardon's watery element. Drink up the bitter water, breathe the chilly death; Soon enough comes the riot of our blood and breath. -C.S. Lewis Entrance Antiphon Of you my heart has spoken, Seek his face. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek; hide not your face from me. Cf. Psalm 27(26):8-9 Communion Antiphon This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. 8 St. Leo Health Ministry March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Colon (or rectal) cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in men & the second leading cause of death in women in the U.S. It often has no symptoms until it s at an advanced stage. The good news is when caught in the early stages through routine screenings; colon cancer can be more easily and successfully treated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, at least 60% of the deaths from this type of cancer could be avoided. The following measures are recommended to help minimize your risk for colon-rectal cancer: -Get regular screenings beginning at age 50; or earlier, if there is a family history of colon cancer, colon polyps, or long-standing ulcerative colitis. -Eat grams of fiber daily from fruits & vegetables, whole-grain breads & cereals, nuts & beans. -Avoid excess salt & eat a low-fat diet, including less red & processed meat. -Be physically active for at least 30 minutes at a time; at least 4-5 days a week. _Maintain a healthy weight. Limit the use of alcohol and avoid all tobacco use. 9 March 12, 2017 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman As we enter the second week of Lent, we hear in our gospel about Jesus transfiguration. Most of us have heard this story many times, but have we ever stopped to think about how we would react in the divine presence of Jesus Christ. Peter s reaction to this vison of divine presence was to honor Moses, Elijah and Jesus with three tents, as was done in ancient times. Put yourself in that moment and imagine how you would react. There is Christian song which, I always think of when I read this scripture passage about Jesus. It goes like this, Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel. Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of You be still. Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall. Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all. I can only imagine. Our Lenten journey is meant to help us get close to our Lord Jesus Christ. It is meant to help us experience His humanness and His divine nature. Our fasting, our giving up of things we like, our not eating meat on Fridays are all meant to help us get out of ourselves and to put ourselves in the presence of our Lord. Our efforts should bring us to not only imagine but to really feel the presence of Jesus. Lent is meant as a time to allow God to overshadow our wants and desires and to listen to Him with all our heart. It is a time for us to reflect on how He suffered, destroyed death and brought us the opportunity for life eternal. We will all experience fears, hardships, and failures in our life, but He will also be there to reach out and touch us and say rise and do not be afraid. Dear Parishioners, You may be aware that St. Pius X and St. Leo the Great parishes, along with our school, are conducting a planning study. We trust that you all by now have received the detailed fact sheet about our proposed projects. As you spend time reviewing these plans, we would like to provide further information about the planning study. Q. What is a planning study? A. It is an assessment used to gauge support for a campaign that will address some, or all, of the needs identified in the fact sheet. The study will tell us which projects are deemed to be most important by our parishioners, and help guide our planning for our fundraising effort. Q. How is the study being conducted? A. The study is being administered by the Steier Group, a development firm. They are surveying both parishes and our school to determine which projects are deemed most urgent, and to identify potential support for the fundraising campaign. Q. Why are we doing this study and starting a campaign? A. This plan and campaign will help us address our current needs, as well as take prudent, thoughtful steps to prepare for the future needs of our community. The most urgent needs identified through our master planning process were capital improvements, financial viability and technology enhancements. The planning study will measure our ability to move forward and accomplish some, or all, of those projects. Q. What do you expect of me? A. At this time, we ask only for your feedback and your prayers. Your input, participation and support will help us to make prudent decisions as we move forward. If you have questions, you are welcome to contact us at any time. God Bless, Fr. Craig, Fr. Mike & Joyce Gubbels Omaha, NE l 09
