Craig Dear Parishioners, We had a great chili cook off last Sunday. I thank the youth group for such a fun event. We had 13 different chili soups and I enjoyed tasting every one. It was fun because every one was different. This Saturday is our Culture Night. I thank the Catholic Social Teach committee and the Knights of Columbus for helping us celebrate our diversity. You are all invited to be part of the new Parish read. The book we selected is called Under the Influence of Jesus by Joe Paprocki. The cost is $8. There will be a book discussion April 25th. If we run out of books, call the office and we will get you one. We have several openings for Mass intentions during the week and on weekends. If you would like a Mass said for your loved one, stop by the office. Monday and Tuesday, I will be attending the Clergy Conference in Schuyler. I will be back on Wednesday. On Wednesday, we celebrate Saint Paul Miki. Saint Paul Miki was a Jesuit and a native to Japan. He was the son of a wealthy Japanese Military leader. He was educated at the Jesuit College. He joined the Jesuits in He was known for his eloquent preaching. Even when things were becoming hostile towards Christians, Paul Miki didn t stop preaching. He was eventually arrested along with 25 others. They were marched 600 miles to martyrdom to be abused and made an example of to their countrymen. His last sermon was preached from the cross. She is a graduate of St. Pius X Elementary and Marian High School and Berklee College of Music. During the Christmas season, Karly performs with Chip Davis and the Mannheim Steamroller at Universal Studios Orlando. She performs in Omaha at public and private events. 4 Connections High School Ministry Make a Connection! Connections is a weekly gathering for all High School Students. It is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn about our faith, discuss relevant issues, and have fun, too! All are welcome! Religious Formation Stuff the Pack-N-Play Help us stuff the pack-n-play during the month of February! The Religious Education program is supporting Essential Pregnancy Services for our outreach project this winter. ALL are invited to bring in baby supplies, diapers, wipes, burp cloths, baby socks, baby outfits, baby toys, etc. Items can be placed in the pack-n-play in the social hall through the end of the month. Each St. Leo Religious Education family will receive a baby bottle to fill with loose change to support the work of EPS. If you would like to help, bring your loose change to the church office or place a donation in the weekend collection marked EPS. Thanks for your support! 5 Faith Discoveries Book Group February 10 Read Psalm 23 from Harold Kushner's perspective. The Jewish Rabbi finds healing wisdom in the Psalm and relates that in his book, The Lord is My Shepherd. Kushner says this Psalm will comfort and calm whatever suffering is in your life. Join the book discussion on Sat., February 10, 9-10:30am in W1. Questions: Sarita, or Linda St. Monica Prayer Group St. Monica was a mother who prayed day and night that her son would change his ways and return to God. Augustine eventually became one of the great saints of the Church. St. Leo has a prayer group that appeals to St. Monica for our own children that they return to God and His Church to help them to sainthood. We gather on the First Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm in our chapel. Our next gathering is February 5th. We will pray to St. Monica to intercede with God for our children that they return to the Church and the ways of God. Please join us. Trying to find a way to fight the winter blahs? 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." Hello from St. Pius X / St. Leo School, We hope you are all doing well and our parishioners continue to be in our deepest prayers. We are so grateful for all of your support and it was such a blessing to have our students and staff members speak to you all at our Saturday and Sunday Masses last week. One of the greatest strengths of our school is that we have such wonderfully supportive families, supremely talented students, and wonderfully dedicated teachers. As our school's mission states, we are a "diverse community" and our work ensures that our students receive a superior education that is rooted in our Catholicity. The other key word that is in our mission, that is lived out by all of our school s community is "service." Thank you to our teachers and our school families who took the time to get our students to Masses at our parishes to share wonderful stories about our special community with our fellow churchgoers. I want to thank our teachers who spoke at the masses or helped answer questions after the masses: Tiffani Herfordt, Becky Wessling, Christy Vogel, Monica Sheehan, Chris Peters, Linda Harrison, Ryan Lampe, Katy Chattin and Anita Petersen. We also want to thank our wonderful student speakers and their families: Natalya Jones (6th), Paul Hansen (7th), Nathan Bluvas (6th), Zayn Harris (4th), Tanner ten Bensel (6th), Lauren Schmidt (6th), Jacob Melkus (2nd), Lila Bosiljevac (3rd), Alice Matuella (2nd), Brooklyn Sauer (7th), Chris Tollo (4th), Martha Engel (7th), Sophia Savoie (5th) and Sophia Tripp (8th). It has been a very busy week at St. Pius X / St. Leo School as we celebrated Catholic School s Week. We had lots of fun events this past week. Thank you to all of our families and staff who showed up to our Kindergarten Roundup and Pre-Kindergarten Roundup events yesterday morning. If you and our family happened to miss these events, you can still register your student for the school year! I know that we would love to give you a tour to show you all of the hands-on learning that is taking place at our school and how we can help your student grow academically and spiritually. We would also be thrilled to show you and any of your friends our wonderful school with student led tours and can even set up days where students can shadow for a day to experience a day-in-the-life of a St. Pius X / St. Leo student. 8 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord There is something about children that makes people smile. Their innocence, hopefulness, and amazing and amusing things they say and do bring out good qualities in people. Bring a child into a nursing home and watch people light up. Or walk into a store with a 2 year old and see people smile. Or watch when a dad carries a toddler on his shoulders and even people driving by smile. Simeon must have smiled at Jesus. He saw more than just an infant smiling and proud parents. He knew he looked upon the hope and promise of Israel. He saw his "heir apparent," the priest, prophet and king who would bring the message of salvation to the world. Simeon no doubt smiled as he gazed upon the infant so many had longed to see. Joy is a very important part of faith. Knowing the Lord and sharing in His life should bring us a sense of joyfulness and peace, if we really believe in the promises of Jesus. Too often people leave Church the same way they leave root canal!! We know and have seen for ourselves the great work of love and hope that God has done. We are His heirs! 2003 Liturgical Publications Inc A Note from the St. Leo Social Justice Team The immigration event held on Sunday, January 20 was very successful. The four presenters were very pleased with our audience of over 50 people. We received compliments from Fr. Craig and the audience about all of the information that was presented. Below is a statement the presenters shared about immigration written by American bishops. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) opposes enforcement only immigration policies and supports comprehensive immigration reform. Earned Legalization: An earned legalization program would allow foreign nationals of good moral character who are living in the United States to apply to adjust their status to obtain lawful permanent residence. -Create an eventual path to citizenship, requiring applicants to complete and pass background checks, pay a fine, and establish eligibility for resident status to participate in the program. -Such a program would help stabilize the workforce, promote family unity, and bring a large population out of the shadows, as members of their communities. 08 l St. Leo Catholic Church

9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman One of the hardest lessons for us as Christians to learn is to know that the Lord is present all the time! From the moment of our conception in our mother s womb, God has been present in our lives. He is always there waiting for us to acknowledge his presence and ask his guidance in our life. When we recognize his presence and allow his Spirit to take over, our lives change dramatically. The evil that surrounds will not prevail against us and our challenges in life will help us grow as a person, instead of tearing us apart. Our gospel teaches us how the people in his home town failed to recognize God s Holy presence. The people of Nazareth would not accept him as the Messiah and wanted to kill him. How often we who call ourselves Christian fail to see and hear Jesus working through those in our lives. The real key to being able to recognize our Lord in our life, is taught in our second reading today. Most of us have heard 1 Corinthians 13 at wedding ceremony, but this scripture teaches us the key to seeing and following GOD. Love is from God and allows us to become what God is calling us to be. Love is not just a feeling or an emotion, but giving of one s self completely to another person. In following the lead of God s Spirit, we experience what LOVE is really all about. We can experience a greater love for our spouse, our children, and even our enemies, when we allow God s grace to help us recognize our Lord presence. Community News & Events ~OTOC Issue Café- the Cost to Mental Health: Tuesday February 5, 6:45-8pm at Urban Abbey (1026 Jackson St.). Doug Koebernick, the Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System for the Nebraska Legislature, will discuss the use of restrictive housing (solitary confinement) in Nebraska's prison system, as well as other current conditions in the prison system. Research has shown that solitary confinement has detrimental effects on individuals, including negative impacts on mental health. ~Caregiver Solutions Group: Thursday, February 7 from 10:00 11:30am This solutions group is a wonderful resource for those caring for loved ones. The caregivers gathered, take a topic of the group s choosing and receive input from the facilitator and members of the group. Learn how to deal with a variety of caregiver issues and obtain specific skills or knowledge while engaging in supportive discussion. The event is free.
