Craig Dear Parishioners, Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. Our Mass schedule is 6:40, 8:00, Noon, 5:30 & 7:00. Ash Wednesday is a day of Fasting & Abstinence from meat. Fasting is for those from years of age. We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Abstinence from meat is for those 14 years old and up. We abstain on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Please grab a book in the commons and a wristband. Please check the bulletin for spiritual retreats, weekends of renewal and our parish mission. So far we have 117 people who have filled out the parish survey. If you have not had a chance, please go to and fill it out or grab a paper copy in the commons. It will help us develop a five year plan. Every Thursday night we have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Church at 7:00pm. Please come during Lent and spend some time with the Lord. All PARENTS who are interested in participating are invited to a short meeting on either Tuesday February 28th, at 6:30pm or Monday March 6th at 6:00pm. The meeting will be under 30 minutes, to distribute the calendar, field questions and determine the interested families' vision for such an ensemble. You MAY STILL participate even if you can't attend the meeting. Rehearsal and performance calendar for the spring will be announced in the March 12th Bulletin. St. Leo Liturgical Ministry Night March 21 Ministry Night will be hosted by the Liturgist and Liturgy Committee as a thank you and Social for our Ministers from 6:30-8:30pm on Tuesday March 21st. 4 Connections High School Ministry Make a Connection! Connections is a weekly gathering for all High School Students. It is an opportunity to meet new people, learn about our faith, discuss relevant issues, and have fun, too! All are welcome! Fasting-By Church Law, Catholics, ages are to take only one full meal and two lesser meals on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. There is no eating between meals. All Catholics over the age of 14 are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, and all Fridays during Lent. Almsgiving or Giving to the Poor -Possible ways to observe: Contribute to the Ash Wednesday collection for St. Leo Human Needs, participate in the Rice Bowl Program, Contribute to Catholic Relief Services on Sunday, March 26. There is a long tradition of combining acts of almsgiving with acts of fasting thus making both disciplines more meaningful. St. Pius X Pasta Fridays March 3 through April 7 Please join us on Fridays at St. Pius X on 69th & Blondo in the parish center for your choice of great meatless sauces over a variety of pastas with a mixed salad and garlic bread. For the kids we have macaroni and cheese and cheese pizza. Tickets are available at the door are $9 for adults, $8 for Seniors, and $5 kids, $40 family max. The food is great and freshly prepared. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School We had a very exciting event following the 5th through 8th grade student Mass the morning of February 15th at St. Pius X Church. We asked the students in 6th through 8th grade to remain in church for the awarding of scholarships by 7 Catholic high schools. Each high school had a representative(s) to present the scholarships to their school. The scholarships given out at this time were based solely on the results of the entrance exams taken at the school of choice a few weeks earlier. All of the parents of the students to receive scholarships were given calls from me prior to this day to come and see their child receive a scholarship. The scholarships awarded were the following: Marian High School Sydnee Baysa, Iris Cunningham, Rylee Gregg, and, Naomi Piskorski; Creighton Prep Anthony Tripp; Roncalli Catholic High School Nolan Gorczyca; Mercy High School Ellee Houghltaling and Audrey Saucier; Duchesne Academy Abby Brewster, Eleanor Magan, Zoey Milhulka, Anna Preston, Elena Sullivan, Isa Weber and Chloe Whiddon; Skutt Catholic High School Grant O Doherty; and Mt. Michael Kaleb Brink and Henry Hohman. We had 18 scholarships, which is fantastic! We are compelled by Rome to Sing the Alleluia whenever possible, and there aren t always [or at least aren t always high quality or accessible] compositions of the weekly verse to sing. So we default in modern Liturgy, when chant isn t utilized, and use some of the common verses which are enjoyable in melody and familiar to the congregation. This week s Alleluia verse from Hebrews 4:12, The word of God is Living and effective; discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart, perhaps epitomizes the Catholic interpretation of scripture. Unlike some (not all) of our protestant brethren, we don t teach that the Bible is a flawless history or a document which in all cases should dictate the ephemeral cultural modes of the day. The Catholic s endearment to scripture is a quest for deeper spiritual and ethical understanding. Thoughts of the Heart, a contradiction on its own, are for us, blessedly, more complex and timeless truths which govern our conversion, our compassion towards each other and the sacrifices, which once made, are indeed our love of Christ. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Have you ever stayed awake at night thinking about some issue you had that day or something that is going to happen tomorrow? I must confess that has happened to me many times in my life. Being anxious or worried in our daily lives is part of human nature, but our lesson from today s scriptures is to put our anxiousness and our worries into the Lord s hands. We must remember that our Lord never forgets about us. He will not forsake or abandon us. He is always there to help us in our daily lives. He is always there to help us through those rough bumps in our life. All He asks from us, is that we have complete faith and trust in him. That is the real point of what Jesus is trying to teach us today. We are in a society that pushes us to worry and be anxious about how much money we make, how many possessions we have, or where we can find the best dinner. We are told that we must have the latest cell phone or the new curved 3D television, but we fail to listen to God who will give us more than we can possibly imagine. If we follow God s lead we may not have riches, we may not have the finest car or house, but we will have a life of peace, security, love and happiness. We will also leave this earth with a hope of ever lasting life. As Jesus has told us today, Your heavenly Father knows what you need. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Catholic Charities Mentoring Moms program is looking for moms to provide mentoring support to pregnant and parenting young women. Mentors enter a friendship role: they give encouragement, demonstrate positive parenting, and simply just listen.
