Craig Dear Parishioners, Today we have Confirmation at 3pm. Please pray for all of our students. A reminder that our parish Advent penance services are this week. Monday is 1:30pm and Tuesday will be 7:00pm. Reconciliation is a great way to prepare for Christmas. I have 10 priests scheduled for each day. If it has been a while since you have gone, that is OK. We will help you. This Friday is our Choir and Bell Choir Christmas Concert at 7:00pm. Please come and enjoy some festive music. Saturday is our Christmas Party for kids who have a parent in prison. We are in need of volunteers to set up and willing to deliver presents to kids who could not make the party. Please call Linda Leary if you can help. Wednesday is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 1531, a lady appeared to a Native American named Juan Diego at Tepeyac, currently Mexico City. She identified herself as Mary, the Mother of God. She requested a Church to be built on the site where she appeared. The local Bishop asked for a sign. The native went to the top of the hill and found roses in mid-december. Her image also remained on the native s coat. The image is still there after 479 years. Blessed Pope John Paul II visited the site four times. He asked for her intercession and protection to all children born and unborn. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of the Americas. Have a great week. Fr. Notice the early time due to the Advent Penance service at 7pm. Please bring a traditional salad, entree or dessert to share or a traditional serving dish to tell about its sentimental value. Come whether you can come at 5 or not. We will enjoy each other s stories and prepare children s favors for the December 15th Angel Tree party. St. Leo Youth Ministry is beyond blessed by our parishioners! Our recent Red Envelope Fundraiser has raised over $6,500 for upcoming trips and conferences! This gives us the opportunity to keep cost affordable for our students so that many more are able to have these life changing experiences. To break it down: It is 11 high school youth to NCYC or One Bread One Cup Leadership Institute. It is 13 high school students or 22 junior high students to summer service experiences. 5 St. Leo 2018 Christmas Project The St. Leo Christmas Angel Tree Project Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 15, 1-3pm at St. Leo. Thanks to many volunteers who are making the Angel Tree Prison Fellowship Christmas Project such a success. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello and Advent blessings to you all, We are so excited for the Advent season and hope you and your families have a blessed Christmas season. Each year we have an Advent theme and this year, Rejoice in the Promise. This comes from many of the First Readings taken from the Sunday masses during Advent. During Advent, we have our students and staff help with morning announcements and prayer, with reminders that We rejoice in what was promised and We rejoice because we are people of promise. Thank you to our teachers Alice Gerraughty, Linda Harrison and school liturgist Dr. Anne McGuire for their work on this school year s Advent theme and communication. Thank you for your continued support and we want to remind our community that the 5th grade students will have two presentations for the Wax Museum this year. The Wax Museum is six-week project where the students spend weeks researching in the library, typing their speeches in the technology lab and memorizing their speeches about their historical figures, which include scientists, mathematicians and religious figures. The final project includes dressing as their chosen historical figures and presenting their speeches to the visitors. Visitors will use quarters to activate each presentation. We are inviting all community members to come and see our talented students creations and to please bring quarters to "activate" these talented scientists! For the first presentation, the 5th grade will present its Wax Museum on Friday morning, December 14 starting at 8:30 am in the St. Pius X parish center. For the money brought in on December 14th, the 5th graders will donate the quarters to school adopt a family program. The schedule for the wax museum at St. Pius X is as follows: 8:30-9:30 a.m. - 5C Homeroom; 9:30-10:30 a.m. - 5D Homeroom; 10:30-11:30 a.m. - 5A Homeroom. This year, we are so excited that for the first time, we are having the 5th graders also present their Wax Museum at St. Leo s on Sunday, December 16th at 9 am and 11 am in the St. Leo s parish center. Lastly, please mark your calendars for the 2nd and 4th grade musical, An Out-of-the-Box Christmas which will be presented on Thursday, December 13th at 7:00 pm in the gym. Also, our 7th/8th Grade Girls Chorus members will be performing Christmas carols that night too. The 2nd& 4th Grade Christmas musical takes place at the final dress rehearsal for the Christmas pageant. The costumes finally arrive and the students notice when they pull them out-of-the-box they are the wrong costumes. Working together, the children come up with some unique, comical and heartfelt ways to share the Christmas message. It s safe to say that if anyone does things out-of-the-box, it s God. After all, He did announce his son s birth to shepherds tending sheep on a hill and Jesus was born in a humble manger. Surely, He can use cowboys, pirates and cheerleaders to tell HIS love story. 8 The St. Pius X/St. Leo School fifth graders are presenting a Wax Museum after the 8:00 and 10:00 Masses at St. Leo s on Sunday, December 16. The students have researched, cited sources, created a Google Slide, and prepared a speech about a historical person they are studying this year. These historical figures will come alive to tell about their life with a suggested donation of one quarter. Money collected will support the St. Leo s Human Needs program. St. Leo s will also be hosting a Pancake Breakfast during this time. An appearance from a well known figure dressed in a red suit is expected to be there! The students are also presenting to SPSL students, families and friends on Friday, December 14 from 8:30-11:30 in the Fr. Thomas O Brien Parish Center. Money collected will support the SPSL Adopt-a-Family Christmas program. Join us at either time and location for the 2018 Wax Museum. Use CARE certificates for all of your Christmas Needs. CARE gift certificates make great gifts or can be used for all of your Christmas shopping. We buy the certificates at a discount, then sell them at face value. This is a wonderful fundraiser for the parish. Stop by the parish office during the week and on Sunday mornings...all certificates listed on page 10 can be purchased at the office. And if your place of employment uses gift certificates for end of the year gifts or bonuses, please encourage them to buy from our parish. Large orders can be fulfilled within a week. Thanks for your support. Men s Cloister s on the Platte Retreat December Calling all men interested in drawing closer to the Lord! Come join us at Cloister s on the Platte located just south of I-80 at the Gretna exchange. The retreat starts at 5 pm on Thursday December 13th and concludes at 2 pm on Sunday December 16th. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman As a young boy I joined the Boy Scouts, and they taught me a great lesson for my life, Be Prepared. Whenever you are planning something, always have everything you could possibly need in case somethings happens. Now that s good advice for all of us, because life happens and we never know what circumstances we may find ourselves in. The same is true for our spiritual life. We need to prepare our hearts and minds to be in union with God s will in our life. As we open the second week of Advent, we hear in our first reading from the prophet Baruch. He is calling God s people to put on the glory of God, to fill their lives with His peace and justice, and how joy and mercy shall be theirs if they listen and follow him. God will help us overcome life s obstacles and lead us into His glory. In our gospel from Luke, we hear that familiar message from John the Baptist, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. That is the whole point of Advent. It is a season which is meant to help us focus on what is important in our life. It is a time to prepare our mortal soul to receive our Lord Jesus Christ into our hearts and minds like we never have before. It is a time to learn to love one another more deeply, to increase our knowledge of God, and to discern what is valuable in our life. Our Advent should help us to become pure and blameless for the coming of Jesus Christ. ADVENT helps us to BE PREPARED to let Jesus Christ do His work in your life.
