Craig Dear Parishioners, We are half way through the season of Lent. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is also called Laetare Sunday. This gets its name from the opening antiphon of Mass, Rejoice O Jerusalem. This is a day we can be refreshed and encouraged to continue with our Lenten acts of prayer and penance. I encourage you to pray, especially our families. I ask all families to find time to eat together and pray together. If you haven t had a good Lent, begin now with a new heart and spirit. It is never too late to prepare ourselves for Easter. Monday & Tuesday is our parish penance services. Monday is 1:30pm & Tuesday is 7:00pm. I have 10 priests here each day. I hope you can come and feel the Lord s mercy and forgiveness. I would like to congratulate some of our Altar Servers who will receive the Serra Club Altar Server award: Kate Mertz, Anna Mertz, Brian Mattingly, Daniel Kampe, & Trevor Gregg. This year s Speaker: Leia Baez is an Omaha mom who received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master's degree in public administration from Bellevue University. She spent most of her career telling other people's stories as a reporter for the Omaha World-Herald before landing a job in government communications for Douglas County. Now, Leia is sharing her own story in hopes of inspiring others to always have faith and never give up on their dreams. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend and pray that you all continue to have a blessed Lenten season. As part of their Language Arts classes, students in grades 5-8 wrote speeches for the Woodmen Speech contest which is annually sponsored by Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial. This year's topic was "Challenges Youth Face". All generations face some of the same challenges, but there are also unique challenges rising to the surface that are affecting today's youth. A variety of topics were covered in students' speeches including the overuse of technology, overscheduling, childhood obesity, and stereotype body images in social media. The students' key points included how these challenges are unique to this generation of youth and some ways to combat these challenges. In early March, qualifying rounds were held after school and narrowed down a field of about 35 students to 12 finalists. On Wednesday, March 20th, these finalists competed to qualify as representatives of our school in the District 1 finals to be held in late April. The winners of the District 1 finals will advance to the state competition in May. Congratulations to all of the students who participated. We are grateful for their teachers who guided their outstanding writing and research. Thank you to their families who supported them. The 12 finalists were Helen Christen and Blake Houghtaling in 5th grade, Annie Herfordt and Lucy Mendenhall in 6th grade, Martha Engel, Carly James, Lilly Risch-Bakhit, Kenadie Rudloff, Gabe O'Doherty, Sophia Owens, and Scarlet Wharton in 7th grade, and Audrey Ehlers in 8th grade. 8 Who Are Our Neighbors? During 2019, it is the objective of the St. Leo s Social Justice Team to inform our fellow parishioners about immigration issues. We realize you have often hear the terms, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and Dreamers. The purpose of DACA is to protect eligible immigrant youth who came to the United States when they were children from deportation. DACA gives young undocumented immigrants protection from deportation, and a work permit. There are approximately 1.8 million Dreamers in America (at least 3,400 in Nebraska), who worship with us, contribute to our economy and add talents to society. The current administration ended DACA and the termination is now the subject of litigation which makes Dreamer s lives very tenuous. Congress, however, could permanently protect and provide them with a path to citizenship through legislation. Interested in Having Your Feet Washed on Holy Thursday? Every year for Holy Thursday, we ask for 12 volunteers (representing the 12 Apostles) to get their feet washed. If interested, contact Drew at or drew@stleo.net. Our goal is to get a variety of parishioners to represent the community. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states as Catholics, we believe that the dignity of every human being, particularity that of children and youth, must be protected. The bishops have long supported Dreamers and continue to do so. They recently encouraged Congress to find a bipartisan solution to protect Dreamers that offers them a path to citizenship. As Bishop Joe S. Vasques of Austin, Texas, Chairman of the Committee on Migration, recently stated: As a nation, we have a moral and humanitarian obligation to Dreamers. These young people have steadfastly worked to improve themselves and our country and attempted in good faith to comply with the law as it stood. Dreamers exemplify the extraordinary contributions that immigrants can provide to our nation. We are asking you to open your hearts and minds to Dreamers and join us to advocate for them. -St. Leo Social Justice Team St. Monica Prayer Group Meets April 2 St. Leo has a prayer group that appeals to St. Monica for our own children that they return to God and His Church to help them to sainthood. We gather on the First Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm in our chapel. Our next gathering is April 2. Please join us. St. Leo Community Garden Calling all Gardeners! It s time to reserve your garden plot. There are 40 plots available for parishioners to rent for $35 per plot. Your rental gives you the space to plant as you choose, and water as needed throughout the summer. Your biggest responsibility is to plant, keep the weeds down and harvest the produce. If you would like a plot, please stop by the office to fill out a form. Plots open to parishioners until April 15; after that, the plots will be available to all in the community. St. Leo Rosary CD Now Available at the Office You can now pray the rosary by listening to our new Rosary CD featuring members of St. Leo the Great! The CD features Fr. Craig, Kevin Cooper, the music of Drew Neneman, and members of our parish. CDs are available for sale in the parish office. They are $15 and ALL proceeds of CD sales go to St. Leo the Great Parish. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Our Gospel today is the story of the prodigal son and often reflects our own life or the life of someone we know. When we turn away from God, our life becomes full of desperate situations. We may think everything is wonderful without God, but in reality our life is falling apart in front of us. There comes a point in this living tragedy when we ask for help, which is usually when we hit bottom. Many solutions may be presented to us, but the only correct one is choosing to follow God. After realizing how much we need our Lord, we recognize how our sinfulness has brought us this pain and suffering. At this point is when we beg for his FORGIVENESS and plead for His MERCY. We all know someone who has walked away from the Church and God. We pray that our Lord will touch their hearts to come back home. When they do, God will RUN to them with open arms and pour out his never ending love and mercy. We need to caution ourselves not to act like the prodigal son s brother, who thinks because he is faithful and works hard deserves more attention. God loves us all very deeply and only wants us to desire His presence, not just when it is convenient for us. During the fourth week of Lent, let us examine ourselves for that rebellious prodigal son spirit within each of us. Then humbly approach our Lord and beg for his forgiveness for our rebellion and lack of faith. Then our Lord will run to us with open arms, embrace us and say, My dear child you have come home to me!
