Craig Dear Parishioners, Today s feast day is the Epiphany. Our catechism says, The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men from the East. In the Magi, representatives of the neighboring pagan religions, the Gospel sees the first-fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of salvation through the Incarnation. The magi s coming to Bethlehem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the Star of David, the one who will be king of the nations. (#528) Today the second collection is for the seminarian fund. This fund helps educate our seminarians. We have over 25 seminarians and the cost for tuition, room & board is over $ 1 million. The best way to help promote vocations is to encourage our young people to consider a life as a priest, brother or sister. So if you know of someone that would make a good priest or sister, ask them to think about it. It would be great if St. Leo s would have someone in the seminary or convent. Father Dillon will be leaving on retreat this week and also spend some time in Florida. He will return in a few weeks. Mike Short will be having surgery mid January and will be out of commission for 4-6 weeks. I am looking to put together a team of volunteers who can clean bathrooms for us twice a week. If you would like to be added to the rotation, please call the office. Have a great week! Fr. Craig Epiphany The arrival of the Magi to honor Jesus is a tradition celebrated this day. It is also a day to bless our homes by marking the entrance to our houses with chalk. Gather everyone outside the front door, and offer this prayer: Let us bless our home and pray that all will be welcome here. Let this door be an entry for the blessings of God. Let this door be a gateway of God s blessings to the world. Members of the household take turns inscribing 20 + C + M + B 19 over the top of the door. C, M, and B are the initials of the name for the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. Then finish the prayer with Christ taught us to call upon the Father, and so we pray: Our Father. 02 l St. Leo Catholic Church

9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman When you stop to think about it, the Gospel accounts of our Lord s birth are overwhelming. Historians would be hard pressed to find an account of any great leader or king that comes close to the account of our Lord s birth. No one in the history of man could fulfill all the prophecies that were fulfilled by the birth of Jesus. This week, the story of the Magi is one more incredible story of his birth and the fulfilment of one of those prophecies. This is the story of how several men, who were not Jews, made a journey which in their day was enormous. They followed the rising of a new star and prophecies they had heard about the Messiah of the Jews. These men probably rode camels or horses over rough terrain for weeks not knowing what they would encounter. The Magi came bearing gifts for a king, but instead found a child in stable. These men gave up part of their lives to give homage to a child king, but found a child born in total humility. These men came as the first gentiles to adore Jesus as the Messiah. They also came to recognize that this birth was a very special moment in history that would change the world forever. They came to recognize that this child was God s greatest gift for all mankind. Before we jump back into the daily grind for 2019, let us take some time at the end of this Christmas season to bow down in prayer and adore our savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Let us open our hearts and minds to receive the God s greatest gifts of HIS love, forgiveness and mercy. Cheryl: ~ Praying For Vocations ~ HOLINESS is a challenge for all of us, whatever our specific vocations. We are called to be holy in all aspects of our lives. This is an ongoing process, often slowed by setbacks. When the saints were alive, they did not regard themselves as saints; rather, they knew they were sinners and they strived to be saints. The process of becoming holy is, even for saints, filled with struggle. Know you are a sinner; strive to be a saint. Chronic Care International is a non-profit organization that treats 1,200 Dominican Republic diabetes and high blood pressure patients using the Ignatian Preferential Option for the Poor. That is poor people without access to health care are provided United States quality of care with modern medicines, blood tests and patient education. Dr. Chuck Filipi and wife Frances Ann Filipi RN will give a brief presentation explaining the program next weekend. We hope you will join our team. St. Monica Prayer Group St. Monica was a mother who prayed day and night that her son would change his ways and return to God. Augustine eventually became one of the great saints of the Church. St. Leo has a prayer group that appeals to St. Monica for our own children that they return to God and His Church to help them to sainthood. We gather on the First Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm in our chapel. Our next gathering is January 8 (due to the holiday). We will pray to St. Monica to intercede with God for our children that they return to the Church and the ways of God. Please join us. Omaha, NE l 09
