Craig Dear Parishioners, Today is the beginning of Advent. Advent has a two-fold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ s first coming to us is remembered; as a season when that remembrance directs our mind and heart to await Christ s second coming at the end of time. Advent thus is a period of devout and joyful expectation. I hope we all can make this season special with prayer time and reflection. The Advent Wreath has a great tradition. In the middle ages, the Christians used advent wreathes as part of their spiritual preparation for Christmas. The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Three candles are purple and one rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday which symbolizes joy because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead. The light signifies Christ, the Light of the World. In family practice, the Advent wreath is most appropriately lit at dinner time after the blessing of the food. Next Sunday is Confirmation. Let us pray for all those preparing to receive this special sacrament. Have a great week. Fr. Craig Cookies, Cocoa, and Christmastime On December 19th, in conjunction with the Christmas Concert we are looking for baked goods donations to sell at a bake sale after the concert. The choir will host cocoa and cookies following the concert as a free celebratory treat, but we would love parishioners to provide their favorite traditional holiday confections for the benefit of our choirs' music and liturgical funds through the bake sale. 6 Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." Dear Parishioners, I m sure you have probably started to hear rumors about the principal leaving St. Pius X / St. Leo School at the end of the school year, so, I decided to give to you the statement that I sent to all of the faculty, staff, school board members and the parents of students in St. Pius X / St. Leo School a couple of weeks ago. It is with the deep awareness of the needs of this fantastic St. Pius X / St. Leo School Community that I want to tell you that it is time for me to take leave from this wonderfully, awesome community of people. I have been extremely blessed to be a teacher at this school for 11 years teaching 1st and 2nd grade, leaving for a couple of years, and then being hired back to be the principal for the next 35 years. At the end of this school year I will be retiring from my position as principal. This was a very hard decision because I love the ministry of Catholic education that I've been able to be involved with for these many years here at SPSL. But there is a time when ones' body is not working as well as it should and the realization is made that this wonderful school needs new, vibrant leadership. I know that the pastors, along with the Archdiocesan Superintendent, and a group of people involved with the school, will work diligently to find a principal who will provide excellent leadership to this very special school. I will continue to work hard this year so that all will be in order for a new principal to effectively lead this wonderful community that makes up St. Pius X /St. Leo School." Laity in Liturgy November 27th Since the adoption of Christianity by Rome and throughout the middle ages, it has been a popular evangelical method of many famous Saints to rebrand secular traditions with Christian doctrine; thus using vital cultural and community treasures to spread the faith. St. Patrick for example, wooed the Gaelic people away from their worship of the Sun explaining: the one true God was the creator of the Sun and Master of the Universe. This distilled over the generations, rendering the Celtic Cross, where the sun is gleaming behind the Cross of Christ. Wreaths and trees were anciently used by Germanic tribes as reminders of life and hearth through the bleak winter months. In 1839, Johann Hinrich Wichern, a Lutheran, believe it or not, added candles to a wheel on his table to help the orphan Children in his care countdown to Christmas. Over the 19th century the wheel was gradually replaced by a wreath. It wasn t until 1920 Catholic Churches began rebranding the candles on this wreath to match the ceremonial colors of Violet and Rose, established centuries before. Indeed, there was no snow in 1st century Palestine. Our bleak midwinter, waiting for Christ, is perhaps a winter of the soul. Ecumenical, charitable and joyful is the church s use of cultural creativity across the earth to demonstrate that Christ is welcome in every heart and home, everywhere. Entrance Antiphon To you I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in you be put to shame. -Cf Psalm 25 Communion Antiphon The Lord will bestow his bounty, and our earth shall yield its increase. -Psalm l St. Leo Catholic Church

Advent Reconciliation Service Schedule Monday, December 19 at 1:30pm Tuesday, December 20 at 7:00pm Help Decorate the Church for Christmas On Thursday December 22nd, please consider volunteering to help decorate the church for Christmas and have supper with us! We will begin around 5:00. Sign up Sheets for Christmas Eve and Day Mass for Liturgical Ministers will be available in the Commons each weekend until December 11. Signups are also available online. The Advent Calendar It seems that German Lutherans were the first to count down the Advent days to Christmas, taking December 1st as their starting point, thereby avoiding the fluctuating date of Advent's beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Chalk marks on the doorpost counted the twenty-four days until Christmas. It is not until the beginning of the twentieth century that printed Advent calendars made their appearance. Today, Advent calendars can range from the purely secular (with a Santa image and a small piece of chocolate behind a door for each day) to the overtly religious, in which the opening of each day's door reveals a Scripture verse pointing to the Christmas feast. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has an online Advent calendar with links to daily Scripture readings and suggested family activities. You can find it at prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/advent/ Faith Discoveries Book Group News All are welcome to join the discussion about the upcoming selections, How Big Is Your God by Paul Coutinho and Richard Rohr or If You Want To Walk On Water Get Out of the Boat by John Ortberg. Questions, call Sarita at or Linda at Connections Meals 2nd Semester Each Connections Youth Group meeting begins with sharing a meal and fellowship. This is a great opportunity for us to grow in community. We invite parents, parishioners, and parish groups to help by providing one of our dinners. 9 First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2016 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman We spend our lives getting ready or preparing for something. We get up in the morning, prepare our cup of coffee, get the kids ready for school, get ourselves ready for work, and then prepare ourselves to face the challenges of the day. At this time of the year, we get out all the decorations and get ready for Christmas. That s just what we do. We are always trying to get ready or preparing to do something. However, are we getting ourselves ready to receive the LORD? As we hear in our first reading, are we ready to climb the mountain of the Lord? Are we preparing ourselves, to enter to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths? Just as Saint Paul said in our second reading today, You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. If there is any one thing we should be preparing for, it is to be ready to come face to face with our Lord. All of us need to prepare our hearts and minds to be ready for the heavenly world to come. We do not know the day or the hour when our Lord will call us home. As Jesus explains in our gospel today about the great flood, people were just living their lives not paying any attention to God. He said, They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Jesus goes on explain when He returns only those who have followed God s teaching will be allowed to experience His glory. During this Advent, take the time to GET READY to meet our Savior.
