Craig Today ends the Christmas season with the feast day of the Lord s Baptism. Baptism is one of our sacraments. Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gate to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. We are freed from Original sin and we are filled with God s life we call grace. The Holy Water at the entrance of the church is a reminder of our baptism. You are always welcome to take home Holy Water to bless yourself and your family each night. If you would like to be part of a committee that will plan Mardi Gras, please call the office. We will begin to plan soon. Mardi Gras will be March 2 nd. I have good news. Before Christmas I received a wonderful gift for the parish. I have been looking for a relic of St Leo the Great. They are hard to find since St Leo has been dead since 414. But Fr. Dan Kampschneider from St Vincent de Paul received one and has given it to us. It is a small piece of St Leo s bone. We are having a Icon made of St Leo and will attach the relic to it so that you can see it and give it reverence. Hopefully the icon will be done by summer. Have a great week. Fr. We have a faith-community surrounding our highly respected school whose members treat each other with dignity, respect and care. We ask a lot of our students and expect the best. 8 Parish Resource Library News St. Teresa of Avila stated about prayer in Interior Castle, The important thing is not to think much, but to love much. (4, 1) You can find the book on the display shelf or in the Spiritual Life section alphabetized by title. Catholic Voice writer, Connie Rossini referenced Interior Castle when she clarified mediating on Scripture in prayer and a formal Bible study in the October 19, 2018 issue. Connie concludes as did St. Teresa, We do not need to be Scripture scholars to practice Christian mediation. We do not need many tools. A Bible and an open, loving heart will do. The Holy Spirit will supply the rest. Teresa of Avila ( ) was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in Her book, Interior Castle, is traditionally celebrated as an outstanding book of Christian mysticism. But is it too deeply philosophical for a non-academic? The copy in the St. Leo Parish Resource Library is the classic text with a spiritual commentary by Dennis Bill, C.Ss.R. He provides ample introductions to each part of St. Teresa s book. Her confessor encouraged her to write the book (1577) to explain various prayer forms to the Carmelite community. Billy follows each chapter with reflection questions to assist the reader digest St. Teresa s text. Doctors of the Church have given us many avenues to journey toward a relationship with God. 9 In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman This week we bring to an end the Christmas season as we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. As Christians we are baptized into the faith which removes original sin and makes us a new creation in Christ. Jesus was born free of sin and never sinned in his life, so why did he need baptism? Pope Benedict stated that when Jesus offered himself to be baptized, he was making an unrestricted YES to God s will, as his inaugural gesture of obedience to God his Father, and to acceptance of the yoke he would bear for us on the cross. This gospel message also teaches a very valuable lesson in our search for personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That lesson for us is humility. Jesus began his ministry baptized with water in total humility before God the Father. God wants us to seek Him in the same way, with a humble and contrite mind and heart. The idea of being humble is hard for us to accept. Pride is what our society teaches and pride is the opposite of humility. Our pride wants us to believe we are the best, the strongest, we are the richest, and we don t need anybody. But the truth be known, we can do nothing without God. To be humble of heart is to seek God s will in our lives. Are we willing to accept that invitation in our own baptism, to humbly bow down and accept God s will, to follow him no matter what happens, to allow ourselves to become part of Christ. If we are willing to do this, then our Lord will say, you are my beloved child, with whom I am well pleased. St. Leo Knights of Columbus You should have received your 2019 dues notice.
