1 569 COMPASS Volume 3 February 2009 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS -- ST. JOSEPH GENERAL ASSEMBLY #569 The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is a radical bill. It creates a fundamental right to abortion throughout the nine months of pregnancy. No governmental body at any level would be able to deny or interfere with this right, or to discriminate against the exercise of this right in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information. For the first time, abortion would become an entitlement the government must condone and promote. FOCA would go well beyond the Supreme Court s Roe v. Wade decision in imposing an extreme abortion regimen on our country. No other piece of legislation would have such a destructive impact on society s ability to limit or regulate abortion. It would eliminate a broad range of laws - informed consent laws; parental involvement laws; laws promoting maternal health; abortion clinic regulations; government programs and facilities the pay for or promote childbirth and other health care without subsidizing abortion; conscience pro-tection laws; laws prohibiting a particular abortion procedure (e.g., partial birth abortion); laws requiring that abortions only be performed by a licensed physician; and so on. Those Members of Congress who cosponsored FOCA in the last Congress should be asked to not to cosponsor the bill in the current Congress. 2 COMPTROLLER S CORNER The response to the dues statement has been fantastic. I am especially grateful that so far everyone has paid fourth degree dues either to myself or with at least a separate check. This being the first year for the new payment system this is great. Please continue to pray for all Sir Knights who are ill and infirmed. Please remember not only these gentlemen, but also the families of our Brother Sir Knights who have gone before us. THE FEBRUARY MEETING The February meeting will be held on the 23 rd at Council Hall #571 in St. Joseph. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM. We will read and vote on any final applications to the Fourth Degree. Please have your form 100 s filled out and bring them to the meeting UPCOMING DEGREES As you have already read the Exemplification of the Fourth Degree will be held on March 28 th. Two qualifications for entry into the Fourth Degree is that you must have entered the First Degree one year prior to the Fourth Degree (this may only be modified by the State Master) and that you be a member in good standing of the Third Degree. With that in mind there will be a Second and Third Degree Exemplification held in February. That will be held February 22 nd at Council The candidates should be there by 12:30pm and the degree will start at 1:00pm. If you know of someone who needs to complete those two degrees, this is the time to get both done on the same day. Secondly, they would still have time to register for the Fourth Degree Ex-emplification in March. Let s try to get a good number of candidates for the Fourth Degree so we can truly honor Father Thomas Ludwig, this year s Honoree. A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR I would like to let everyone know that if you have any information for the Assembly that needs to be passed on this is one way to get that done. Please remember that the deadline is the first Sunday following the regular meeting of the Assembly. The regular meeting is generally held the Fourth Monday of the month. Even if the monthly meeting is not held, the deadline is the same. Also, if you see any irregularities or incomplete information please contact Ed Anderson to have changes made. A new contact point for Ed is tlc12rip@att,net and you can start using this right away. THE LENTEN SEASON BEGINS February 25 th is Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. We encourage all Knights to participate in the Lenten services at your Parishes and support the Lenten activities of the

3 Church. WHO GETS AN HONOR GUARD We had another case where a family didn t know that their loved one was entitled to an Honor Guard until late in the funeral process. If you re a Sir Knight you are entitled to a full Honor Guard at your Rosary and Funeral Mass. If you re a Spouse of a Sir Knight, a Third Degree Knight or a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, you are entitled to two Honor Guard at your Rosary and Funeral Mass. Please remember to let your family know of your wishes. They can let the funeral director know this so that he can arrange to have an Honor Guard present. Just because you are entitled to have an Honor Guard doesn t mean it will automatically show, we have to be requested. PRAY FOR OUR SOLDIERS Lord, please hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. 5 Since the last news letter we had request for two Honor Guards. The first was for the funeral services of Sir Knight Charles Kovac. This request was on short notice and we would like to thank Sir Knight Herman Seufert for attended the Funeral Mass on behalf of the Honor Guard. The second Honor Guard was for the Special Olympics event held at Lafayette High School. For that Honor Guard we had Sir Knights Leonard Amos, Richard Shelton, Ron Orcutt and Martin Hart. Thank you gentlemen for your time and effort. VOCATION PRAYER Almighty Father, may the same light of faith that St. Paul and the other apostles carried to the ancient world help today s priest become beacons to those who have not taken the Good News to heart.
