1 Vol 7 Issue 7 July 2016 The Cabrinian Newsletter of the St. Frances Cabrini Fraternity of the OFS Monthly gatherings are at 1:30 PM on 3rd Sunday of the month unless otherwise noted. St. Nicholas Byzantine Church, in St. George Hall (back building) 1051 Robinson Ave., Barberton, OH EVERYONE IS WELCOME ; GUESTS ARE EXPECTED July gathering will be on Sunday 17 July 2016 A New Assignment With sadness (for ourselves and our fraternity) and with joy (for him), under obedience, Fr. Vit Fiala, OFM, who has been our Spiritual Assistant for a number of years, has a new assignment. Fr. Vit is being transferred to Rome where he will be in charge of formation in his community. We have truly been blessed with having Fr. Vit, for our S.A., and now it is time for us to bid him farewell; he is needed elsewhere. Please keep him in your prayers as he embarks on this next part of his journey through life. He is a wonderful and wise teacher. The fraternity council will begin making the arrangements with Fr. Vit and with the Immaculate Conception Province of the OFM for a new Spiritual Assistant. Please keep this matter in your prayers. May we be guided by the Holy Spirit. Important! Fraternity Elections!!! During the July monthly gathering we will be holding elections for members of the Fraternity Council. In order to conduct the elections we must have a quorum. Thus it is imperative that every member attend this gathering unless they have a very serious reason for not being in attendance. Please mark your calendar now. Thank you for your prayerful consideration in this matter.

Cabrini Our fraternity was presented with a wonderful gift during our 2015 Christmas gathering: a second class relic of our patron saint, St. Frances X. Cabrini. This special relic is available for members to have in their homes for one month span of time. Whoever ever takes the relic, please let the current council Bob Burtscher know. The relic will be kept next to the fraternity s Bible during our monthly gatherings. There is a special case to place the relic in for transport, along with a booklet about St. Frances X. Cabrini. When the relic is returned to the fraternity the following month it is to again be placed next to the Bible. Announcements at Gatherings Any announcements you wish to make during the monthly gathering must be cleared by Fraternity Minister in advance of the start of the gathering. This is not to make anything inconvenient for the members but rather to stave off any problems that could occur. This rule will apply to everyone in the fraternity. In the past we have had members making inappropriate and/or erroneous statements, promoting their own agenda or simply taking valuable time to talk about items not related to our fraternity or even the Secular Franciscans Order. Our time together is very important, and our time is limited. In addition to prayer, we have routine business of the fraternity and on-going formation. Our time together is valuable, but also a bit limited. We need to use it wisely. Thank you for your understanding.

3 Vol 7 Issue 7 July 2016 J P I C Justice Peace Integrity of Creation Susan Kramer, OFS JPIC Chair for St. Frances Cabrini Fraternity Early in the morning of June 12, a terrorist pledging allegiance to ISIS carried out the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Omar Mateen was behind the hostage standoff of several hours, murdering 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, and seriously injuring 53. Following the mass shooting that claimed the lives of 49 in Orlando, Catholics have tried to be the hands and feet of Christ in showing mercy to victims and their families and loved ones. The immediate response was to provide grief counseling. The clergy, with the generosity of bilingual priests, deacons and the staff from Catholic Charities assisted the family members affected. Bishop John Noones and other diocese and Catholic groups held Masses, rosaries and prayer vigils. During this Year of Mercy the Catholic Church, working with the St. Vincent de Paul Society coordinated the funerals, Masses and burials of many of the victims. The staff at Catholic Charities and local parishioners accompanied the victims families as they grieve. Once again during tragedy, the response from Catholics across the county has been generous.: offering financial aid to those who have no way to pay to bury the dead. We recall Pope Francis words on Vatican radio: Pope Francis joins the families of the victims, and all of the injured, in prayer and compassion. Sharing in their indescribable suffering he entrusts them to the Lord so they may find comfort. We re in the Jubilee Year of Mercy. And here we have individuals who are in tremendous need of mercy -the repose of the souls of those who are deceased, their family members, their friends, the tremendous shock that has occurred personally. Gary Tester, executive of Catholic Charities Central Florida, told CNA on Wednesday. The Catholic Diocese of Orlando s response to the tragedy, he added, follows the words of Pope Francis, who has called us to remember how important it is to simply love our neighbor. Being merciful and compassionate is part of our mission as Catholics and Franciscans. Following the examples of Jesus and St. Francis, we pray and comfort everyone who is hurt and broken-hearted, and not just those in our own Catholic and Franciscan families. We are to love everyone. We are not to promote or glorify sinful behavior. But when anyone is in trouble or is grieving, we are to respond with open arms and open hearts. Mercy and love is what God expects of us.

4 On Sunday the 2nd of October our fraternity will joyfully celebrate the Permanent Profession of four wonderful candidates in our fraternity: Betty de Marco, Rose Akins, Lee Gaydos and Dave Gaydos. Professions This will be in the beautiful (and new) St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown with Fr. David Misbrener, pastor, (also a Secular Franciscan). Mass will be at 11:30 AM, with a reception to follow in the church hall. More information will be shared closer to the date, but please mark your calendars now. October is not as far away as it seems. A very special plus! St. Peter of the Fields Church has been designated by the Diocese of Youngstown to have a Holy Door for the Year of Mercy. Right: The new St. Peter of the Fields Parish building. The old Historic Shrine Church, is to the left of the new building. Transitus The Transitus of St. Francis is normally commemorated on 3 October. In past years we attended the Regional Transitus Service at Sancta Clara Monastery, planned by Eucharistic Fraternity. This has been on a weekend afternoon near the 3rd, so people who work and for those who prefer to avoid driving at night. In 2016 the Feast of St. Francis is on a Tuesday this year, making the usual day for Transitus on Monday the 3rd, the day after the profession. It is possible that the Regional Transitus Service may be at Sancta Clara on the same day as the professions. More information will be shared with you closer to the beginning of October. Very Important Reminders! 1. NO information is to be passed out during fraternity gatherings without prior approval from the Fraternity Council. In the rather distant past there has been some difficulty with this issue, hence this rule. 2. Soon the United States will be holding elections for various positions, including the President and Vice-president of this country. As Catholics, we have an obligation to be informed voters and to participate in this process. The fraternity council will share guidance and information as it becomes available from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

The proceeds help reduce the cost of the Annual Fraternity Retreat for attendees. The parish and its congregation has been very generous is allowing us to use their facility -and they are also very generous with donations. We appreciate their great kindness to our fraternity. But help is needed for the sale! Our donut sale for 2016 will be held after the Masses on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of August. Can you spare some time to sell doughnuts after one of the Masses? Please talk with Debbie as soon as possible. S P E C I A L G U E S T S Far left, T.O. Please keep these individuals in your prayers as they consider a vocation to the OFS. May they be guided by the Holy Spirit in discerning their call to the Secular Franciscan Order.

6 Come and join us for another night of prayer, fellowship, fun and food at the home of our gracious hosts, Maria Elena and Roberto Meza. We will continue to work on the ten plus pounds of cancelled stamps given to us by Mary Lou Swartz. And, while we are doing that, we will enjoy Mexican hospitality provided by Maria Elena and Roberto, and pizza and beverages donated by the fraternity. Date Saturday 23 July 2016 Time 5 PM until????
