1 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 5, 2018 A Year Of The Grace Of Yes INTO YOUR HANDS WE COMMEND OUR SPIRIT Let Us Pray Spirit of the Living God, we ask that you fall afresh on us. Enkindle within each, an awakening to the gifts you have bestowed upon all, who belong to the faith family of Holy Cross. With the Grace of Openness and Mercy may we approach you in prayer each day, placing ourselves before you that as a Parish, we might become Disciples of Jesus the Christ. May you anoint all our endeavors, as we dare to dream, to bring forth the gifts of the Spirit. We ask your blessing upon our Parish in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 415 Robley Drive, Lafayette, Louisiana Web Site Office:

4 Welcome Honor Empower YES INITIATIVE YES There are two parts to this important yet simple phrase. The first part or word is YES. Three letters that can determine the direction of your journey and the journey of the parish. The YES comes from our Blessed Mother who said YES to the invitation of the Father to be the mother of His Son. With doubt and struggle, Mary surrendered and the dream of the Father became flesh in our world! It was her time. But NOW it is YOUR TIME for YES! It is most challenging and somewhat fearful as it brings us across the threshold to encounter the person of Jesus, the Sacred Within. INITIATIVE The next part of the phrase is INITIATIVE. Now what, pray tell, does that mean? This is a word not often applied to Church, Parish, Journey, or Spiritual Path. Yet, without INITIATIVE there is NO movement, No growth, and NO becoming. The word means Creativity, Spirit, Energy, Vision, Self-Motivation or Resourcefulness. Now which one of these descriptions applies to you, where you are in relation to God, His Son Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Community, and Parish?? For many of us, this is new. The world in which we grew up as Catholics was never spoken of in these terms. After all, the parish was simply a place where the Church was located; it was a place where one attended mass or sent children to CCD: a place for baptisms, weddings, or funerals. It was NOT, usually spoken of in terms of A COMMUNITY TO BELONG TO AND TO GROW WITH AND TO BE INVESTED IN. Holy Cross desires and is hungering for the gift of who you are and the gifts you bring to welcome, honor and empower the self and the parish. We invite you to dance and to pray with this new yet old idea of becoming church. 4

5 Is There More To Life? Explore Alpha What Is Alpha? Alpha is a series of 11 interactive sessions in a small group setting that explores the basics of Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation in a relaxed and respectful atmosphere. It is run over an eleven week period, with meetings held one evening a week. The Alpha course is free of charge. Alpha has been experienced by over 29 million people has been endorsed by the Catholic Church. What to Expect Good Food Every Alpha starts with shared time together over food. It s a great way to get to know one another and build fellowship. Good Films All of the 25 minute Alpha films shown each are designed to spark good conversations while exploring the big issues of faith and unpacking the fundamentals of Christianity. Every film addresses a particular question and each film builds on the next topic. Good Discussions - For many people this is the most valuable part of their Alpha experience: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on that week s topic and discuss it as a small group. You are free to discuss as little or as much as you wish. Nobody is forced to say anything and nothing is out of bounds. Who Is Alpha For? Alpha Is For All Adults Whether you are a cradle Catholic, it matters not. Alpha is for the churched or the unchurched. It is for the believer or the non-believer. Come as a couple, come with a friend or come alone. When? The next Alpha Series begins on September 6th. The meetings are on Thursday nights, starting at 6:30 pm. at the Holy Cross Calais Center in Faith Hall. Each session lasts about 2 hours and will end on time. 6 Worship TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigrating to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the pious ladies, as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible routine, less arduous and more flexible than most traditions, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation began without reference to the rule of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the reign of terror, and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States until after the Civil War.) From the beginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educational mission, even though they discovered in the rule that such work was officially off-limits for the contemplative life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. NO HARSHNESS Fight all error, but do it with good humor, patience, kindness and love. Harshness will damage your own soul and spoil the best cause. St. John Kanty GOD S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being God s work. But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is God s work? This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent (John 6:29). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WHAT WILL YOU SAY YES TO IN AUGUST? Accepting and seeing beauty in all you see Follow one teaching of Jesus each month Getting the POPE APP and reading each day Write a love letter to yourself Offer your service at a nursing home Offering compliments to people you meet each day Singing at Mass Allowing older children to live their journey Respecting differences we encounter in others 6

Message from Father Blessing I have extended an invitation to Rev. Jerry Morgan to come to our parish on the weekend of August 11-12, Father Morgan will speak to you about the work being done by Unbound (previously known as GFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 18 developing countries since 1981 empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. Unbound's unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. Please join me in welcoming Father Morgan to our parish. Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ, Fr.
