1 ST. MATTHIAS PARISH SUNDAY MORNING CHRISTIAN FORMATION PROGRAM Parent and Student Handbook Thomas Gallagher Coordinator of Lifelong Faith Formation Brian Jens Director of Life Long Faith Formation St. Matthias Parish 9306 West Beloit Rd. Milwaukee, WI
2 St. Matthias Mission Statement St. Matthias Catholic Parish is committed to continuing the ministry of Jesus the Christ. We invite and welcome all. Come live, grow, and be challenged by the message through prayer, formation, and service. Christian Formation Mission Statement The St. Matthias Christian Formation Program ultimately seeks to provide families, made up of students and their parents/guardians, with the opportunity to develop an intentional relationship with Jesus the Christ whose faith manifests itself in community with the larger Church and service to the world. - Familial Programming o How the family practices their faith outside of the class on Sundays is what is most important. - Develop an Intentional Relationship o Our catechesis seeks to provide opportunities to develop lifelong skills for both students and parents to practice their faith daily. - Faith Manifested in Community o Families see their full potential by being in communion with their immediate family and then by participation in the community of the Church on Sundays. - Service to the World o Students are gradually introduced to the needs of the world and how they can use their talents to help make the world a better place. Ultimately students will be challenged to take the initiative in giving of their time and effort to fulfill the needs of the world. Sunday Morning Curriculum K4-6 th grade will be using workbooks from Loyola Press. K4 and K5 will work with the Early Learning Program, using the God Made the World and God Loves Us workbooks. 1 st -6 th grade will use the Finding God series. This curriculum is a teacher led style of instruction that provides a solid foundation in the basics of the faith for our students. In these programs, each student receives a workbook that enables them to leave the class with a tangible record of their learning gains and helps to engage parents to continue the learning beyond the classroom. The St. Matthias Middle School Program is designed for the 7 & 8 th grade students. The middle school students will use the Catholic Connections Handbook by St. Mary s Press. This series is divided into four sections similar to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer. 1
3 By registering your child for the Sunday Morning Program, you agree to the policies outlined in this handbook. Admission Policy St. Matthias, in its mission to bring everyone closer to Christ, takes its mission seriously by welcoming anyone to be a part of the St. Matthias Christian Formation Program. Parent/Guardian Involvement - A committed parent/guardian who practices their faith is 8 times more likely to have children who will practice their faith as young adults. (homefaith.com) 1. 5 FAMILY SESSION *NEW* A new component of the Sunday Morning Program for the year is Family Sessions. There will be one in the fall and one in the spring. All classes (K4-8 th Grade) will meet together as a large group in the Krieg Gym during regular class time. A speaker will come in to present on a topic related to Faith Formation. Parents are asked to attend these sessions with their child(ren). Information will be made available in advance of the Family Sessions. Please see the attached flyer (page 14). Feast of St. Matthias On May 14 th, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Matthias, the patron saint of our parish. Mass will be celebrated with dinner to follow. We would like to invite and welcome all Christian Formation families to join us as we mark this celebration. More information will be available ahead of the Feast Day. All parishioners are welcome! Sacramental Preparation 1. Students in 2 nd grade will start immediate preparation for First Communion and First Reconciliation. Parents will receive information on sacramental prep in September. o Children commonly participate in a sacramental preparation program (Christian Formation or Catholic School) for at least one year prior to entrance into immediate preparation. This on-going catechesis, together with the formation parents are providing in the home, forms the foundation for the immediate catechesis for First Communion and First Reconciliation. 2. If for whatever reason your child has not received Baptism, First Communion, or First Reconciliation and they are beyond 2 nd grade please call Tom Gallagher. Tom will work with families to help students get caught up in their sacramental preparation. Cell Phones 1. Students with cell phones are not allowed to use them during class. Cell phones should be turned off before the start of class. 2. Catechists have the right to take anyone s cell phone if it is seen during class time. The phone will then be held onto until the end of class. Catechists may ask students to put their cell phones aside at the beginning of class and pick them up at the end. 3. In cases of emergency where a student must have their cell phone on them a parent must indicate that to Tom Gallagher prior to the start of class. 4

10 Classes Required by Archdiocese Safeguarding All of God s Family The goal of the Safeguarding All of God's Family program is to protect our children and all in the church family from abuse and related dangers. To assist in meeting this goal, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee requires us to do a Safeguarding lesson with each grade appropriate for their age level. When this class takes place you will receive advanced noticed of at least two weeks prior with a letter that will be sent home. The letter will indicate the time, place, and what will be covered in the lesson. Parents are welcome to attend with their child. A parent may also choose to have their child opt out of the class. If that is the direction the parent wishes to take they must indicate that prior to class and will have to give a signature verifying their decision.
