1 March 25, 2018 Saint Patrick Catholic Church Canby, OR Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Sacraments: Adult Baptism Adults seeking baptism are expected to participate in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). RCIA begins in the fall with the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation in the Spring (Easter). For information call the Office Infant Baptisms: Registered parishioners are expected to complete a Baptismal Preparation program prior to scheduling a baptism. Baptismal preparation programs are offered 3 times a year. Next class: Sacramental Prep Policy: In compliance with Archdiocesan policy and recommendations for the preparation and reception of the Sacraments, St. Patrick requires that any candidate receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation, First Reconciliation and First Eucharist must be actively involved in age appropriate Religious Education for a minimum of 1 year prior to beginning preparation for the Sacraments. The candidates must have regular attendance in our programs. Additionally, it will be expected that each candidate will continue to be involved in age appropriate classes and regularly attend weekend Mass during the period of Preparation for the Sacrament. Marriage Policy Please contact the Pastor at least six months prior to the wedding to ensure adequate time for these preparations. The rehearsal for Holy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies will take place on Tuesday, March 27 beginning at 6pm in the church. ALL scheduled Liturgical ministers are required to attend these rehearsals. All elect and candidates and sponsors are required to attend Easter Vigil rehearsal. TULIP SALE Relay for Life will have their annual tulip sale this weekend after all the Masses. Please support this great cause. NO DAILY MASSES As a reminder, there will be no daily Masses or communion services this week! EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Eucharistic Adoration will follow the Holy Thursday Mass until midnight. How quickly praise can turn to derision. We see it in business, politics, even with friends and family. One minute somebody is singing praises, the next it s insults and scorn. The gospel readings display that very juxtaposition today. We come into church singing Hosanna! and fifteen minutes later we cry, Crucify him! The people wanted an earthly king to shake off Roman occupation and achieve political independence. But how quickly they turned on Jesus when they realized that he would not fulfill their plans. God had something else in store. As Jesus did not meet the expectations of the crowd, or even his disciples, they turned and fled. One disciple ran so fast he ran out of his clothes! Peter, of course, denied he even knew Jesus. The crowd chose to have an insurrectionist released to them rather than Jesus. By the time Jesus was on the cross the only remaining friends were some women and Joseph of Arimathea, though it seems Jesus wouldn t have known about Joseph s act of courage. The women were said to have ministered to him and followed him when he was in Galilee. Though the women lacked the disciple title, they were clearly his followers, offering a ministry of presence up to and during his death and subsequent burial. They stand in contrast to the behavior of the real disciples (those who bear the name) who denied, Jesus, or simply fled the scene. The entire passion narrative in Mark shows the confusion, bewilderment, and misunderstanding that punctuated the horrific scene of Jesus crucifixion. The crowds believe Jesus is calling for Elijah, the chief priests and scribes mock Jesus as one who cannot save himself, Pilate acquiesces to the crowds demands and participates in a miscarriage of Justice. The centurion alone (a Gentile) is the only one to face the crucified after death and proclaim faith in him. Peter (a Jew) confessed Jesus as Christ and now the centurion (a Gentile) confesses Jesus as Son of God, only after this death. To be the Christ, the Son of God necessarily means suffering and death. To have come down from the cross would have been to deny Jesus own identity as Christ and Son of God. Rather than a political military leader commanding armies in a revolution, Jesus is the crucified Son of God, Messiah. God s plans are not our own. Living Liturgy year B

3 GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please give generously. DONNA CORI GIBSON CONCERT APRIL 8, 2018 The Knights of Columbus are proud to sponsor her concert on April 8 th, here in the church at St. Patrick s. Donna will sing two songs at each of the masses on Sunday and then put on a great concert on Sunday afternoon, starting at 3:30 pm. Her faith filled songs will inspire you to dig deeper into your faith. She sings from the heart and is inspired by our Blessed Lady and the Holy Spirit. The concert will be free, but we will be asking for a free will offering to help offset some of the costs to fly her in from St. Louis. In addition, the Knights will be putting on a fabulous Spaghetti & Meatball Dinner after the concert. Dinner tickets must be purchased in advance and will be sold after the masses (costing $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12) or on the Knights website at Please see the flier in this weeks bulletin. PAMPHLETS AVAILABLE As we approach one of the most sacred and holiest of weeks in our church, we have available in the back of church, two pamphlets available to our parishioners. The first pamphlet is called The Real Presence. This pamphlet will help you rediscover the love for Our Lord in the Eucharist. The second pamphlet is called Divine Mercy After Suicide. Every one of us has known someone who took his or her own life, or someone whose life was affected by the suicide of a loved one. Many give up hope for those who have committed suicide and believe their souls are lost. This pamphlet explains why you should never give up on them - and what you should do instead. Please help yourself. LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY We are fickle human beings, often in search of entertainment. We are designed by eons of evolution to look toward the future rather than the past. Palm Sunday is our conscious effort to root ourselves in our past, the very foundation of our faith, the paschal mystery. This week we celebrate the most ancient and fundamental mysteries of faith. Without this effort to reach our touchstone we would likely be fleeting from one moment to the next, seeking to fulfill various desires and cravings. Being in touch with the paschal mystery reminds us that this life has meaning beyond the here and now. We have future that is eternal. The love, relationships, and bonds we create in this life will endure. The passion and death of Jesus necessarily result in this resurrection, which gives us a promise and foretaste of that eternal life. Rather than seek the next best thing, upon entering this Holy Week we recall that our faith is rooted in the past, and our destiny is eternal.
