IV THE STOW, WORLD'S O., F R I D A Y, WASTE How many, many day dreams I have had of four acres of land, a cottage, fruit trees, berries, a garden spot, flowers, shrubs, a little rural home, no mortgage, no landlord but myself, a refuge, a place of rest, a sort, of security, a back yard, a front lawn, a gravel walk, a double garage, a placie to invite my friends, a dear enjoyable spot, a place to live, a dream called home. Why, the whole affair shouldn't cost more than five thousand dollars. Yet I have pushed it along in the f u t u r e tense. Why not such a reality, for wherever you travel there is in super-abundance waste land, land not being used, it's infested with weeds, with swamps, there is stoney land, low land and hills, unproductive land and thousands of acres of idle land? So we pine, we hunger, we dream and the wild winds blow. I wonder will our dream ever come true. Will the waste lands of the world share their treasures with burdened humanity or will the winds of countless ages blow scornfully on? More appalling by f a r is the waste of men, yes, men, poor unfortunate or misguided fellow creatures. The waste of men. Great droves of them are failures, wrecks, broken on body and soul, they seem to have missed the way or their calling. Luck or fate, they say, was unkind to them, they dissipate, they sin, their difficulties are senseless to a voice that speaks to the soul, DECEMBER 17, 1937 N O. 51 time and tide pushes them backward, they are hard to salvage, they are like the world's waste land. The penal institutions retain great numbers, the streets of every city display them like so many samples of a lost world. The gay young life coming on like weeds and flowers, some with mighty purposes for time and eternity, others waste, waste, waste. And what tragedy is comparable to the waste of a human life, and what glory is comparable to the glory of human attainment, of success, of triumph in any field of human endeavor? More pathetic still is the waste of time, of talent, of influence, of opportunity with that group of folk called Christians or church members. Pathetic, for they are the enlightened ones, the calledout group, the torch bearers of the human race. More, they are the children of God, the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Here and there one seems to catch the vision, now and then one awakens and arouses others from their lethergy. Alas, though, when I group all churches of all lands, when I weigh them in the balance of eternal values, I cry aloud in my anguish, for behold, I see a waste, yes, waste. Waste of land, waste of men, waste of zeal, of time, of energy. You, who can and do not, you wilh talents unused, you without serious thought of time and eternity, you, my friend, take this to heart, that waste is ruin, it's desolation, it's sin, it's a deadly con-

Funeral services Thursday. Burial in Stow cemetery. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Bridgers, she leaves daughters, Mrs. Lee Harrison and Mrs. Frank Price, sons Thomas E., W. R. and R. H.
