1 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH HEWS Vol. II Friday, September 27, 1935 HISTORY OF COMMUNITY CHURCH Continued from last week, by t h e courtesy of Mr. W. R. Lodge. This barn was a well built, comparatively new structure of fine oak lumber, forty by eighty feet. I t was close to the n o r t h side of Graham road, on what is now country cluib- property, and could be. readily moved to the new church! lot. T h e following d a y, Sunday, March 17th, there were about one hundred present at Sunday school, when Supt. Lodge announced t h e gift of the barn by Mr. Harry Walters and by unanimous consent the present was readily and gracefully accepted. A committee consisting of Messrs. Charles Traxler, Howard D. Roose and Lodge was appointed to i n vestigate the feasibility of moving th eneivly donated barn u p G r a ham road to our church- lot and converting it into a church. Contractors were taken to the b a m and estimates were made. Meantime a farmer came and offered our church nucleus $500 cash fo rthe barn and we sold it and applied the money to our building fund. A little later some of our folks thought it a mistake to build on the Graham road lot suggesting that it was too f a r away from t h e populated center and proposed the acquisition of three lots on Elm road at the corner of Kent road in the Paradise Park allotment, which was readily selling, providing we could sell the Graham road lot. STOW, OHIO No. 39 Our lot was readily and well sold to Mr. Walter D. Howard and we then purchased t h e lots where t h e present church and parsonage are located on the corner of t h e Kent and Elm roads next west and northerly of the A. J. Barringer home. Meantime and ever since t h e Christmas meeting Mrs. Winifred Wirts Dague h a d been preaching 1 for us and t h e bible school and church to be was making steady progress. Sunday, April 7th we changed from the 2:00 P. M. service to 9:45 A. M. and ninty-sven were present at the school building at the first morning session, where we continued until the present building was dedicated. Many of our folks felt t h a t there should not be two churches a t Stow, but t h a t we should consolidate with the Disciples, our sister oragnization which was then nearly one hundred years old. I t was decided to make an effort toward such an amalgamation. A committee from our group met with the officers and elders of t h e Disciples church in their church on Wednesday evening, May 1st, 19;18 and again at their prayer meeting Thursday evening, May 2nd. Both meetings were well attended but no consolidation was effected. Wo continued our services as usual, had meetings and parties and continued in church activities which tended to augment our building fund..mrs. Lodge offered her home for Hear Rev. Hulme Sunday Morning Subject :-A New Heaven and a New Earth. 2 Peter 3:13

We even took the bedroom furniture out, erected canvas shelters over it on the balconies and converted many rooms into veritable stores with ample counters. The ladies had worked hard in big preparations of bazaar goods of all appropriate kinds for the occasion. More than one hundred chicken dinners were served on the third floor, a musieale from local and Cuyahoga Falls and Akron talent was put on in the big living ram where more than sixty were seated and the other rooms were crowded as well as the open windows,, many being on the varanda. It was a perfect night and a joyous crowd paid twenty-fice cents each, admission. Everyone seemed to have a fine time. The result was that 'the ladies cleared over five hundred dollars at this our first bazaar and we didn't have to sleep under the tent on the roof either.- - Our building fund was growing, likewise the congregation and the spiirt for church work was splendid. On July,4th we put on a celebratio nand field day at the school house at which more than 400 chicken dinners were served and many light lunches netting, much profit and a ogod time for the community. 4 fi THE COMMUNITY CflURCH NEWS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS If God is omnipotent, if He knows the future and past, knows who will be saved and who lost, is not this predestination, and what will keep us from being fatalists? I can't Conceive of anything so unreasonable as the doctrine of Fatalism. To believe that all things are predetermined, that they will be so regardless of one's efforts is, to me, a monstrous doctrine. If a soothsayer was to tell me that I would lose a checker game by a certain score I would alter that score if I had to swallow all kings on the board. Does a man always die the day the doctor says he will die? Certain fixed laws twirl the earth on its axis, fixed laws also move the earth around the sun, each motion more exacting than any human mechanism. However, does that argue that the^diety operates mechanically every action of every human being of the human race, moving foot, or hand, or eye, or intellect of myriads of the races with such precision as to have A killed in battle, B shot, and C run down by traffic, etc.? In an insane man is bent on drowning himself, drown himself he will, unless guarded, fatalism there would be conditional. Fatalism is not absolute. Some color is given to the doctrine in the case of Judas or to the death of Simon Peter, or to the destruction of Jerusalem. None of these events can be classed as regular, rather abnormal happenings, events out of order. Fatalism is arbitrary power exercised without regard to free moral agency. Now in a word, God foreordained the human race, He planned their, spread upon the earth, God foreknew that sin would blight the race of men, that is if He would vouchsafe to them free choice in the affairs of life, placing good and evil before them, evil would ott times dominate. Hence God provides a way of escape through the avenue of repentance and. belief in His Son our Lord. Now according to the Bible doctrine of free moral agency, of sin bringing a penalty of death, is off-set by a no-coercion in repentance, which brings justification, which is full pardon and a redeemed soul. This new testament doctrine of salvation through Christ strikes out every stigma of fatalism, because it is based on the free action of the human soul, GEO. M. HULME
