1 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS Vol. II Friday, June 7, 1935 MINISTER'S COLUMN What does the church stand for? Anything in particular? Is the 'Community m u c h wrought up about the program of the followers of the Great Teacher? Does the church just go along- in the common place way, droll, stubborn, /uninteresting? IS our energy spent in running our machinery, stringing a few fish an giving much time and attention to the curriculum of the church? Come, Brother, what do we stand for? Baptism, Communion, or is it the high-days in Zion? I condemn none of the fundamentals and orthodox teachings of the early church. But, sir, I declare, without Qualification, if that is all the church stands Aor in this n w era, our days are numbered and we are found wanting. The church is a farce and a dead contact when it ceases to function for the glory of God and as a Kingdom builder in. men's lives. The churches in this world must unite, merge and forever quit riding the sectarian hobbies. United w'e stand and live, divided we fall and die, and that's only what we deserve, it's only reaping what we have sown. The church must light a new light, quit preaching that we must go back, look ahead, brother, go forward, if Jeus Christ is dead, if STOW, OHIO No. 23 /there is no power in His name, then' let us pack up and perish. However, if Jesus Christ be God - and He lives within then let us rise to the issue and build a new and better world. Let us start in Stow, cross out three-fourths of the old churcli tenets, customs and notions. Come, now what do we stand for? ia group of saved people with His spirit urging, us on. Organized to build immortal -character, to show, by example that Jesus lived. We stand for a live church, a holy life, a house of prayer, a boon o'f activity for bringing cheer,, good-will and timely h u m a n aid to our needy. We stand to do, to be, to see, to hear, to go. We are God's minute men. We declare that every mother's son and daughter shall be active, everyone using their talents, no drones, no nominal human baggage to be carried. We stand for a new day, a new church, a new hope, new contact, and new life within. The sick, lame, a n d lonely, the poor and destitute must be -cared for. The drunkard, the thief, the bad man must be warned and entreated..we dare not neglect them. The children, the wayward youth, the pleasure seeking who forgets God must be contacted and plucked from the destroyer. The improvement in their playing- has been marked and while they are by no means perfect we will have to admit they are good. Accordingly it ha,s been decided to hold a Musical Sunday Evening Program the second Sunday 'night in each month throughout the summer. This will give the orchestra and other church musical organizations something to work for and at the same time we hope the people will be generous when the collection plate is passed so' that it will be possible to purchase new music and oilier items from time to time. Good work. Miss Louise Nichols, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. U. Warren Nichols, 108 Williamson road, is visiting relatives for a short time in Charleston, West Virginia. Last Saturday at the Harris farm, Tallmadge road, a 20,000 cubic foot per hour /flow of gas was struck. This, at a depth of 3900 feet. They will keep on drilling with the expectation of striiking oil. How would you like an oil well in your back yard? Mrs. Geo. M. Hulme, our minister's wife is visiting their son Milton G. Hulme in Pittsburgh, Pa. AH his life, Rev. Hulme tells us he has kept himself thin by hard work, yet he also tells us he refuses to work. We hate to thinik what he would be like if he had NOT refused to work. Donald Gerhold, age nine, underwent a mastoidal operation last Friday at City Hospital. He is now convalescing at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gerhold, 158 Hudson road. Where was Mrs. Judy last Sunday? Answer She went to Garrett, Indiana, Saturday and was back again on Tuesday. We are pleased to welcome into church membership, Mrs. A. J. Maxwell of Klein avenue and Mrs. O. E. Powell, Munroe Palls. They united with the church last Sunday on confession of faith. Mrs. North who lives most of tlhe time with her husband on River road expects to leave this weekend for an extended visit with her sister in Walton, West Virginia. Come at noon. Forrest Hawk, Jr., will be director in charge of the music and a part of the athletics at the Akron Y. M. O. A. camp at Lake Y-Ona. He leaves on June 16th and will be back the first Saturday in September. A very exclusive crowd consisting of the Youngs, the Banners, the Olsens, the Zircles and the Haartjes enjoyed a picnic dinner last Sunday afternoon at Virginia Kendall State park which is near Boston Ledges. Jane's father and mother are both ill and she expects to spend the summer with them. ^Mrs. Henderson will return home soon. Charles Sansie, now in a CCIC camp, is located in Nevada. He writes that the camp is right next to Boulder Dam also close by is a golf course where he can play golf. Charles Dunn who is in the directory business with Wm. V. Smith is now busy in Hudson preparing a directory there. Mr. Smith is still in Kent. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Maxwell and 'family, 14 3 Thorndale avenue, spent the last weekend in Cleveland visiting relatives. Orlo Friend of Canton is visiting this week with his uncle Mr. Sam Friend. Mrs. J. D. Ham, Mrs. H. J. Stockman and sons John Byron, Marc, and Odwin left last Monday noon for Texas. If the old car holds together they hope to arrive by the end of the week. Miss Jane Stewart and Mr. Harry Stein, Jr., both former Stow High School graduates will be married this Saturday in St. Patrick's church, Kent. Miss Lee th grade teacher in Stoiy this past year will be married at her home in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, June l'8th. It is rumored that Miss Francis McLaughlin, another one of our 8th grade teachers this past year is to be united in marriage June 16th with Donald Nickerson. James Cross, nearly decided to remain in Los Angeles and attend a.radio school there but the latest word which his parents have received comes from San Francisco and is to the effect that he will be home before long. Dillen after making several improvements about his home constructed a 'first class Play house for his children ages 4, 3 and 2.
