IV STOW, O., FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER NO 39 CAPITAL AND LABOR Delicate and difficult indeed to write about is this most colossal and age long conflict, namely, Capital and Labor. But, brethren, have you ever thought of the stupidity of this contention? Isn't it reasonable to believe that strikes, lock-outs, sit downs, riots and such like will be viewed by some advanced civilization as barberous, inhuman and grossly ignorant? Capital, my friend, has been since the world began. From the beginning one man has owned more land than his neighbor, or one man would accumulate one thousand sheep and five hundred camels while other men would have a score or less. From time immemorial one man has been the possessor of five talents and his neighbor had but one. One man among five millions is born to be a great leader while the others are not so gifted. Heaven may have equality but on the sojourn never. Be reasonable my laborer friend, why does any man labor? What is the only conceivable object of labor? To get something, to lay up in store, to accumulate, which is capital. Any healthy man can produce more than he can use for himself, hence his surplus is capital. That capital means ease, rest, amusement, life. Someone has said that labor and capital are one, that the public is a cow, that labor and capital are the thumb and finger which properly cooperating gets the milk. Labor always must of necessity do more than provide for immediate needs, canning fruit or filling coal bins for winter, these will suggest that Labor seeks a home, provides life insurance, educates the children and plans for a rainy day. Capital cannot live without labor. Suppose the factory closed down, how will Capital pay taxes, keep up repairs? Capital's only salvation is to find profitable investment, labor, without interruptions, is the only stream of life for capital. Labor and Capital alike cannot live and be antagonistic, they can only live and succeed by cooperation. Whoever thinks that either can prosper at the expense of the other is mistaken. Capitalists who seek to exploit Labor and Labor that is bent on destroying Capital are alike fools. Capital long ago would have owned and enslaved the world, however, Capital is like a flame always needing the fuel to keep it alive, and the heat thus generated is a useless thing unless it be put back at once to Labor. Capital and Labor are two partners, two friends. It's wicked for them to quarrel. They are one, their object is production, and production is life. Surely, sometime man will find Sunday Evening Topic:- "Is Christianity Practical"

Hulme Preaches A Splendid Sermon Last Sunday evening Mr. Biggs called a group of young folks together for the purpose of restarting a Young Peoples Society in our church. A nominating committee consisting of Howard Sanner, Mrs. Judy and Betty Cross was appointed. These three people will also act as a sort of planning committee and will report this next Sunday evening at six thirty. Now, possibly partly on account of the fact that the young folks have started a meeting in the church, and partly because the church was warm while the whether it be equipment or service cost you no more at McGowan's. B y reading nothing m o r e t h a n t h e f r o n t pages of our n e w s p a p e r s we know t h a t R u s s i a r e j e c t e d the church, c h u r c h b u i l d i n g s being either d e s t r o y e d or used f o r o t h e r purposes, S p a i n as a n a t i o n h a s done a w a y w i t h t h e c h u r c h, a n d Germany h a s v e r y l a r g e l y r e j e c t ed the c h u r c h a n d m a y e n t i r e l y eliminate religious f r e e d o m m o s t any day now. True, a s m a l l or l a r g e r n u m b e r of i n d i v i d u a l s in e a c h n a t i o n still k e e p t h e lights of C h r i s t i a n ity b u r n i n g in t h e i r homes, b u t t h e i r r u l e r s h a v e r e j e c t e d t h e old church. In A k r o n at the very hour Rev. Hulme was preaching, the more wealthy churches have closed t h e i r doors, t h e r e is n o S u n d a y e v e n i n g service, but, t h e t h e a t e r s a r e open a n d j a m m e d w i t h people, t h e b e e r " j o i n t s " a r e c r o w d ed a n d will be open as long a s t h e l a w p e r m i t s, such is t h e condition t h a t exists all o v e r o u r own l a n d. H e a s k s t h e question, " H a v e a n y of t h e nations, or a n y of t h e cities, o r a n y i n d i v i d u a l s w h o have rejected the church become a n y b e t t e r off. A r e t h e y r i c h e r? Are they s m a r t e r? Do they have a n y m o r e p e a c e of m i n d than formerly?" T h e a n s w e r is no. T h e s t a t e m e n t t h e n follows t h a t a m a n is a fool w h o lets slip t h e l i t t l e t h a t h e h a s u n l e s s he g e t s s o m e t h i n g b e t t e r in e x c h a n g e. T h e second t h o u g h t is: Why? W h y has the church been rejecte d? T h e a n s w e r is given b y a s k ing the following questions: W h a t h a s t h e c h u r c h of A m e r i c a done f o r t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s of A m e r i c a? They have done much but never functioned as they might have. W h a t have the churches done a b o u t vice c o n d i t i o n s? D o t h e c h u r c h e s of S t o w e v e r t r y to g e t a h o l d of a n y " b a d m a n? " Why did t h e c h u r c h e s close in Mexico for a time? A n s w e r W h a t did t h e c h u r c h in Mexico e v e r do f o r t h e p o o r p e o n? Rev. Sooner or later fellow workman will reject his so called Christians or so called religion. He has nothing to offer. There is too little difference between the church member and the man of the world. Many then ask why belong to the church when it's full of hypocrits. The church we should have is the church where we will find wisdom, it is the church where we will find guidance. It is the church where the need of the human heart for the touch of God as available. It is the church that can give courage so that "I can face tomorrow and its duties." The last thought is found in Romans 14:17. For the kingdom of God is not meat (eating) and drink (drinking); but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. "The church will be vital to our life and the lives of others only when each of us does his or her very best, because of a strong and sincere love for our Lord Jesus Christ." DAY WA-5069 NIGHT WA-1889 CHOW ORCHESTRA BIBLE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE RALLY DAY That our Bible School orchestra performed very well last Sunday morning all agreed. That our orchestra would be a credit to a Bible School of two thousand members is the report that Rev. Hulme brings back from one of his musical friends who visited us two or three Sundays ago. That our Bible School attendance is much less than 2000 is a self-evident fact. Now it is up to us to increase our Bible School attendance. Make it more in keeping with the quality orchestra which we enjoy each Sunday morning. Therefore, to this end last Sunday morning Rev. Hulme made a motion, seconded by Mr. Lodge, that the first Sunday in October be observed as Rally Day and that the men and boys compete with the women and girls in bringing in new members, visitors and back sliders. Five points are to be allowed a member who brings a visitor, ten points for an old member returned, and twenty points to be granted for a new scholar. Now to make this competition really attractive to the men and boys it was voted that the losing side supply ice cream bars to the whole Bible School. We are somewhat in doubt just how well this last suggestion would work out for five hundred ice cream cones cost $25.00 and that's a lot of money. Everybody come. * SUBSCRIPTIONS Knowing in a general way our weakness, viz., a lack of cash, a lady approached us last Saturday evening with a hand full of quarters which she wanted to give to the Community Church News. These quarters will be used to pay for approximately a quarter of a hundred new gift subscriptions. For both the money and the subscribers we are thankful. It takes both to make a successful paper. Furthermore, anyone who wishes can duplicate the aforementioned deed. It would please the editor. Advertising of late does not bring in quite enough to pay the entire cost of printing. A few more subscribers would help out a lot. There are many things which we would like to do in connection with the paper if the cash were available. Hulme last Sunday evening and the Sunday evening a week ago, were two of the best ever delivered from the pulpit of Stow Community Church. While he may have stepped on the toes of some we believe truth is what people want and if Rev. Hulme continues

Miss Catherine Ashton visited Sunday with Donna Biggs. A new son was born recently to Mr. and Mrs. A. Black of Brookside rd. The Senior B. Y. P. U. are planning a special program for next Sunday evening when they have a part in the service. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Leasure are vacationing in W. Virginia with relatives and friends. Mrs. Ashton was unable to attend Sunday school last Sunday and her class was taught by Mrs. Frye. The Junior B. Y. P. U. had a

Twenty children were present and enjoyed a fin^evening together. Mrs. Douglas, Mrs. Clason, Mrs. Klein, Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Wagner attended the all day Missionary Council meeting last Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Cuyahoga Falls. Rev. and Mrs. Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Sutton, Mr. and Mrs. Biggs, Mrs. Wagner and Mrs. Rutter went to the Hungarian Baptist Church Monday evening to the covered dish luncheon and quarterly meeting service of the Akron Baptist Association. Dr. Sharp of Cleveland was the guest speaker. Mr. and Mrs. Frye called at the Kincaid home Sunday afternoon and found the scarlet 'fever patients very much improved. They will still be in quarantine for several days. <8> AN UNUSUAL EXHIBIT An unusual exhibit at the Stow Garden Club's Flower Show held Tuesday, the 31st, at the rejuvenated old Town Hall, was a Grapes By BASKET or TON Stow C. Lodge, and taken from a temporarily abandoned garden plot in the Mary Ellsworth Lodge Bird Sanctuary at Silver Lake, is eight feet and seven inches tall with a half dozen large branches irregularly shooting upward from the main center tree like stalk, thus giving a spread of over five feet and with its purple flower tips reminds one of a peacock's tail. This immense beautiful plant has over a hundred buds and

However, we don't expect all of the State of Ohio for they won't know about it. BUT we do expect YOU. For it is Rally Day bloosoms on its tips ahd was a great attraction in its central location in the end of the hall. Many folks despise the thistle, but this variety is not considered much of a pest like its cousin and outlaw, the Canada Thistle, nor is it hard to get rid of like the Canada. They usually grow only two to five feet high, but this has been a most unusual growing season. No especial care, or fertilization had been given this plant, and it was only discovered about WA-5601 a week ago. The gold-finches or thistle birds are fond of it. It was a big job to place the over 100 pounds of porcupine like bush with a bushel of dirt on its roots into a galvanized tub for a pot so as to display it. It is the intention to try and keep it for exhibit at the Silver Lake Garden Club's Flower Show at the school house on Saturday. September 11th. Wm. R.
