1 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS VOL. V STOW, O., FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1938 No, 47 ABOUT PREACHERS A, comes here, Rev. B is moved Wonderful and beyond estimate in human values has been the contribution of ministers of the elsewhere. Thirty years ago a Gospel to the world's civilization. In this brief manuscript I mention just a few of our own worthy men of the cloth. William. Penn was a Quaker minister, through his father he inherited wealth, the King of England gave Penn n grant of land in part settlement of a debt due the father of William Penn. This grant was known as Penn's Woods, or now the State of Pennsylvania. Perhaps no preacher s : noe the world began ever owned such a vast tract of land as the great State of Pennsylvania. William Penn laid out-the city of Philadelphia, known in the early days as' the city of Brotherly Love. William Penn preached to ihe settlers, preached to the Indians. He was loved and respected by the natives, they called him the Great White Father. It's a question whether any man in the settlement of any part of America was ever as beloved and respected as Rev. William Penn. We live in an age when ministers are shifted about like furniture or baggage. Four or five years in many denominations and the preacher must move. The field is like a checker board. Rev. great cry went up for an educated ministry, churches every- : where demanded degrees, the; schools produced the scholars and today among all the learned brethren of the ministry there isn't a single preacher of power likened unto out back-woods Peter Cartwright, the Methodist pioneer who rode horse back from Pennsylvania to Illinois along the Indian trails. Perhaps many ministers deserve shifting frequently, perhaps they gain experience as they move about, perhaps it is for the good of the cause, but mark, omitting extenuating circumstances, the few preachers who leave their names high on the cliffs of human history stick to one place. They grow stronger with the years, they endear themselves to the people, they go about doing good. No star of the first magnitude in the, ministry ever left his parish under forty years of service. "A minister is small and weak who must move on in four years. i It's debatable whether this country or any country ever produced a preacher equal to Henry Ward Beecher. The government at Washington sent Beecher to England during the dark days of the Civil War to deliver lectures Sunday Morning Topic:- "No Friend Like Jesus" Sunday Evening Topic:- "The Ox Knows His Owne?"

Falljs Printing <>., printer. in all leading cities of Great Britain to establish a better understanding of the controversy between our North and South. Some of Beecher's speeches are arguments. Perhaps no man was ever sent to another country who wielded such universal respect as Henry Ward Beecher. Many evangelists have tramped up and down the earth but none has outshone Dwight L. Moody. Moody started his mission work in Chicago and out from that center he labored all his life, a few more than forty years. George Truett, the greatest preacher in the Baptist denomination, has been in Dallas, Texas, for forty years. Russell Conwell spent fifty years in Temple church in Philadelphia. A great church, two hospitals and a university remain to grace his memory. Space forbids else I could name one hundred others whose We Can Prove... that our service will be appropriate to your highest and finest estimates of the beautiful and within the limits of your ability to pay. Whether its "O" before "N" or "N" before "O" makes all the difference between "on" and "no." So! Walking into their emporium last Saturday noon with high hopes of a pleasant meeting and a joyful greeting one awful judgment descended upon us in the form of Butcher Woolford and Proprietor Ruggles aided and assisted by all their numerous clerks including "Al" Stein. * Filled with righteous wrath and indignation they were very much upset, for be it known the Central Cash Market at Stow never, never sells any frozen poultry. Only the most choice, live, vivacious, plump, and healthy specimens are brought into their place of business and these are butchered as we understand it now, only on the advance order of the customer. The ad should have read "no frozen stock," but the "O" for an "N" and the "N" for an "O" made it read thus and so: "We dress our own poultry on frozen stock" which you will see and undoubtedly agree, is a serious blunder. Just plain carelessness on the part of those who set the linotype, the proof readers and the printer. Even the editor is responisble for he hires the prin.-- ters and pays them occasionally when he gets the money. So! Therefore and accordingly we make public and humble apology and hope that those wronged may receive recompense for unjust publicity and that this brief explanation will satisfy. We also hope that all those who refrained from buying their Thanksgiving poultry at the Central Cash Market because they thot it was frozen Will see fit to do as they think best about the matter. With apologies to the Central Cash Market and the heretofore misinformed public. H. J. STOCKMAN
