1 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS Vol. Ill Friday, July 31, 1936 STOW, OHIO No. 31 MINISTERS COLUMN INCENTIVE Incentive, yes sir, that is it. In- : centive, that which encourages or.arouses to action. Just the recipe needed in the Community church, or any other church. Incentive stirs the mind, fires the soul, falls into line and moves along to victory. Love, pride, hate and a hun-..dred other qualities may be powerful incentives to be up and doing, Any great achievement in any field of endeavor, is an incentive to every looker on. May High Heaven pity the soul whose incentive has grown", dim, who withers by the wayside and feels no urge to achieve. If there were no incentive in our factories to roll the smoke from stacks, to turn the crude material into a finished product, if there be no incentive on the farm to toil on and on through good and bad report, if there be no incentive in school to manage and ins-pire and educate ten thousand, green, giggling pupils, if' there be no incentive then would human progress lie dead at'our feet. O,.incentive, it is that, that drives ships across the sea. Incentive swims and flies, with its human freightage through the clouds. Without.incentive we each and all are as but dumb driven cattle..human fields are' as white unto harvest' as they were in the olden day, but the man with the scythe, well he has just forgotten the rhythm of the swing that gathers in the grain. It's incentive you need brother, glorious, unconquerable incentive, incentive, that magic thing 'that inspires, that divine quality that charges body, mind and soul, that ' feels itself Heaven qualified, spiritually ordained, a supernatural thrill that feels the finger of the Almighty, and is awed by the eye of the living God, that thin'g called incentive that breathes the spirit of another world, that lifts body and soul out of the common-place, because a consuming fire burns within, a fire called incentive. Incentive sees, it' hears, it achieves in life or death, it matters not. Incentive is a soul quality, it overcomes the world, it glorifies God, it lifts man to his highest plain. Incentive, my people, be endowed with this one glorious gift, "this living flame, without which the church is only human and with which the church is divine. GEO'. M. HULME MEN'S BIBLE CLASS The subject of our lesson for next. Sunday is "Philip's Missionary Lal'iors." In this lesson we find that the Lord sent Philip to Gaaa to assist an Ethiopian in the interpretation of the Bible. He was able to read but he was not able to understand the meaning of what he read. It is an interesting fact that we do not all interpret the Bible in the same way. We are inclined to draw conclusions first and tfien sustain those conclusions by the BIBLE SCHOOL :30

HE CHURCH CALENDAR BIBLE SCHOOL - j: Surday 9:30 JUNIOR CHOIR PRACTICE - Tues. 2 p.m. Bible r a t h e r t h a n to read it with an open mind and allow the conception to be f o r m u l a t e d - by the text. Most of the differences of opinion are minor in character but they f u r n i s h a basis for a discussion and the interest factor of a discussion is of sufficient value to merit space in the lesson analysis. Some Bible students believe t h a t it is not God's plan to persecute or tempt Christians. They believe, r a t h e r, t h a t all reverses and sufferings are brought upon the followers of Jesus Christ by the sin of these individuals themselves. While there is n o doubt that, sin is a cause for justification of persecution yet to say it is not God's plan places the individual in a position where it becomes difficult for him to explain the meaning of many passages of scripture. For instance, in Gen. 2i2.:il we find this " A n d it came to pass a f t e r these things, t h a t God did tempt Abrah a m. " Job 1:6-12, "And the Lord said u n t o Satan, Behold, all t h a t he (Jolb) h a t h is in thy power; only upon himself put not f o r t h t h y hand." Job 2:,l-6, "And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold he is in thine hand, but save his life." In 1 Corinthians 10J13 we read this, "Then h a t h no temptation taken you but such as is common to m a n ; but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above t h a t ye are able; but willwith t h e t e m p t a t i o n also make a way to escape, t h a t ye may be able to bear it." Also read Peter 1:6-9. These passages furnish a substantial basis for the belief t h a t it is God's Wan to strengthen our f a i t h and to stimulate our" growth in Grace by subjecting us to tests a n d persecution. N. W. 3 3 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS K AIR-CONDITIONED THE McGowan Funeral Home takes both pride and pleasure in announcing the installation of a complete and modern air-conditioning unit, which will provide fresh air of a pre-determined temperature and maximum purity, at all times. This new equipment is of the most modern type, and provides for the introduction of 3,100 cubic feet of cooled, washed, dehumidified air per minute. The operation of the equipment is thermostatically controlled, and maintains an even, comfortable temperature inside the funeral home, regardless of wh'at outside temperature may be. The purifying aspect of the equipment is one of extreme importance, also, since it assures those attending services here of a high degree of freedom from the possibility of contracting colds and other communicable diseases always an ever present hazard wherever people gather in close quarters.
